The Story behind the Cover photoCourtesy of Ted BurhansI well remember the moment of that shot. Tommyhad allowed me full access to the production, and heencouraged me to feel free to float wherever Iwanted to get the best shots. From backstage I couldhear the crowd was alive and I could see themusicians were excited. To the far right of thestage, just to the side of the heavy curtains, adistinguished, bald gentleman wore a set ofheadphones with a wrap-around microphone, slightly askew on his head. I could therefore hearboth sides of the rapid conversation he was carryingon with Tommy. It was a series of instructions formovement, music, and stagecraft, and Tommy wasrapid-firing orders and pumping everyone up. Thismoment was about to be the first appearance of theevening for the adults (til now Tommy had beenteaching and coordinating). Naturally, he built theenergy up even more as the curtain was about topart in from of him, and I moved to hide behindsome on-stage scenery to wait for my opportunity. Before I had moved, the last thing I heard from theheadset was Tommy:"Everybody ready? Here we go, I'm comin' outwailin'."And he did.31

One of my favorite Tommy MemoriesWe were all sitting around a fire at one of the DudeRanches in the Adirondacks. Of course, the guitarswere out and there was an impromptu jam inprogress! One of the kids had bought a gimmicky 3flute from the gift shop. Tommy picked it up andstarted playing it, but he didn’t like the way itsounded. “It wasn’t in tune”, he said.Tommy took a dollar bill and rolled it up, tightenough to fit in the end of the flute. He adjusted itin and out while playing it, and “tuned” it. When hewas satisfied with the sound, the jam began againand it sounded awesome. There were many more years of camping and campfires jams, but it always amazed me how he couldtake that cheap toy flute and make it sound thatgood.-Jim Bernetich -One of the many Camping Cousins35

Tom had a knack for making everyonefeel like they were #1.If you showed up at a gig he wouldacknowledge you with a little tip of thefinger pointing to you. Even while hewas belting out a note. Most of us that received this tip assumedthat we were the only person he wasdoing that to.Actually, he did that to a dozen peoplethroughout the night, it didn't matterthat it was not an exclusive greetingthough. He loved to make everyone feelwelcome and that is all that mattered.-Kevin Moriarty53
