SCHOOL SERVICES/PROGRAMSLEARNING RESOURCE CENTREThe Learning Resource Centre hasbeen created to facilitate school success for all students. Assistance isprovided for long term problems inreading, writing, spelling and mathematics. Students can refer themselves or a teacher may refer themto the Learning Resource Centre.The staff working in the LearningResource Centre can work one onone or in small groups to assist learning as well as help develop studyand organizational skills. The monitoring of the progress of IdentifiedExceptional students is the responsibility of the Learning ResourceTeacher.SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLSMAJORIn addition to completing the OSSDcompulsory requirements, students at TTSC have the opportunityto participate in a Specialist HighSkills Major Program(SHSM). Thereare four focus areas for students tochoose from: Auto Restoration,Construction, Hospitality and Tourism, or Health and Wellness (Hairstyling and Aesthetics).The students in an SHSM programare required to complete the following SHSM required componentsalong with their OSSD compulsoryrequirements: 4Bundle of credits identified inthe sector specific guide in oneof the 4 pathways destinations:apprenticeship, college, university and the workplace (seepathways chart),Sector supported senior English, Math, Science and/orBusiness courses Industry recognized certifications and training,Experiential learning opportunities (cooperative educationalong with sector specific reachahead experiences),Access to Ontario Skills Passport program to track academicaccomplishments and explorecareer requirements and destinationsAt graduation, successful SHSMcandidates will receive an OSSDdiploma which will be embossedwith a ‘Red Seal’ along with a RecordCard that outlines all the sector recognized training and certificationsthat the student has attained in theprogram. This accomplishment willprovide grads with specific skills andknowledge which will support theirchosen future pathway.LIBRARY SERVICESThe school library is a place that isreadily available to staff and studentsand a place where all are welcome.The purpose of the teacher-librarianis to assist and encourage studentsto develop the research and literacyskills necessary for lifelong learning. Furthermore, emphasis is onencouraging literacy for all studentsat all levels, and helping studentsand teachers use the library to itsfull advantage. The library is a placewhere students and staff can confidently build literacy skills for bothrecreation and instructional.STUDENT SERVICESThe function of Student Services is toassist the student in dealing with personal, educational and vocationalconcerns. Student Services providesindividual and group counsellingopportunities, as well as informationregarding educational and vocational planning, apprenticeship,career search and community agencies. Parents are encouraged to contact Student Services regarding theprogress of their son or daughter.EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING(CO-OPERATIVEEDUCATION)WHAT IS EXPERIENTIALLEARNING?Experiential Learning (Co-op)provides a student with an opportunity to integrate and enhancetheir in-school programs by movingoutside the traditional classroom towork at planned learning experiences that take place in the community. This provides a unique andenriching experience where thestudent can “test a career” assisting them with their post-secondarypathway. Experiential Learning alsogives the student the opportunity to:demonstrate responsibility, maturityand self direction; develop leadership skills; enhance employabilityskills; explore personal interests andestablish positive ties to communitypartners.HOW DOES IT WORK?When a student reaches grade 11he/she may be eligible to spend ahalf-day block of time (morning orafternoon) working on-the-job underthe direct supervision of a professional in the community. Teachersfrom TTSC will be in regular andfrequent contact with the workplaceto ensure that a safe and enrichinglearning experience is evident. WHAT IS THE APPLICATIONPROCESS?A student must indicate during thecourse selection process that theyare interested in participating in anExperiential Learning (Co-op) thefollowing year. If you have questionsspeak to the guidance counselor orthe co-op teacher for more information.CREDIT RECOVERYCredit Recovery is a program available to students who have not beensuccessful in completing grade10 and/or grade 11 compulsorycredit courses. Students have theopportunity to recover previouslyfailed courses in a supportive classroom environment. Please contactyour guidance counselor for moredetailed information.MAGNET PROGRAMSMagnet programs are unique twocredit, half day programs offered ina semester format. These programsare offered at the grade 11 and 12level to all Brant County secondary school students as extensionsto their own high school’s electiveprograms. Students will be busedto and from TTSC for these half-daycourses. Magnet courses are offeredin the following sectors: Auto Body,Baking, Carpentry, Cooking & EventPlanning, Cosmetology (Hairstyling & Aesthetics), Green Industries(Horticulture), Living and Workingwith Children, Masonry, and SmallEngines.DATES FOR SELECTINGCOURSES AND HOW TO SELECTThe selection process begins in early February and ends in earlyMarch. After March Break the classes are set and there is noguarantee that further registrations will be accepted.This course calendar describes general information, diplomarequirements, programs/services available, and the courseselection process at Tollgate Technological Skills Centre. Be awarethat the course selection will have an impact upon eligibilityfor post-secondary education and may influence chances forapprenticeships or certain types of employment. Students mustcomplete and submit an option sheet to enrol in the coursesonline. Students here at TTSC will fill out their option sheets withthe assistance of our Guidance Counsellor and Student SuccessTeacher. The students will be provided direction but the ultimateresponsibility for choices will rest with the students and theirparents. What do you need to graduate?COMPULSORY CREDITS (TOTAL OF 18)4 credits in English (1 credit per grade) The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) maybe used to meet either the Grade 11 or the Grade 12 Englishcompulsory credit requirement. The Grade 11 Contemporary Aboriginal Voices course maybe used to meet the Grade 11 English compulsory creditrequirement. Students will first write this test in the spring of their gradeten year. Unsuccessful candidates will be given the opportunity forremediation at the school and will be able to rewrite the test. Studentsidentified through an IPRC (Identification, Placement, and ReviewCommittee) will be allowed accommodations for writing of the test.Students not working towards an OSSD (Ontario Secondary SchoolDiploma) may be exempted from writing the test.ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACYCOURSE (OSSLC)Students who have written the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School LiteracyTest) once and were unsuccessful are eligible to take the OSSLC (OntarioSecondary School Literacy Course). Successful completion of the OSSLCsatisfies the secondary school literacy graduation requirement.40 HOURS OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTForty hours of Community Involvement is a requirement for graduation.Community Involvement is a set of self-directed activities in the communitythat do not involve remuneration and do not replace a paid worker. Apamphlet entitled “Information on Community Involvement for Studentsand Parents” is available from the guidance office. The pamphlet willprovide all the details concerning the Community Involvement requirement.ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATEThe Ontario Secondary School Certificate will be granted on request tostudents who leave school before earning the Ontario Secondary SchoolDiploma, provided that they have earned a minimum of 14 credits asfollows:7 Compulsory Credits (2 English, 1 Canadian Geography or CanadianHistory, 1 Mathematics, 1 Health and Physical Education, 1 Science, 1Arts or Technological Education or Computer Studies)7 Optional Credits Selected by the student from available coursesCERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENTStudents who are not working towards an OSSD or an OSSC may beawarded a Certificate of Accomplishment upon leaving secondaryschool. The Certificate of Accomplishment is a useful means ofrecognizing achievement for students who plan to transition directly toemployment after leaving school. The Certificate of Accomplishmentis to be accompanied by the student’s Ontario Student Transcript. Forstudents who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a copy of the IEPmay be included.

ProgramsNIGHT SCHOOL/SUMMER SCHOOLNight school classes are offered inBrantford, Haldimand and Norfolk.They are offered Tuesday and Thursdayevenings. A wide variety of compulsorycourses are offered. For additional informationcall 519-753-6079.GRAND ERIE LEARNINGALTERNATIVES (GELA)GELA provides an alternate opportunityfor secondary school students who, forvarious reasons, are not experiencingsuccess in a regular school setting or whowant to re-enter school after leaving.Scheduled day programs, booklet ande-Learning are available.STUDENT TRANSITION EXPERIENCEPROGRAM (STEP)The STEP program is designed toengage students by ensuring that theirindividualized strengths, needs andinterests are addressed in an alternativesetting within the school.The program provides students withthe opportunity to earn credits, engagein experiential learning activities,explore career opportunities, anddevelop pathway plans and personal lifemanagement skills.For more information, contact yourschool’s Guidance Counsellor.ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) ANDPRE-APThe Advanced Placement Programallows students to pursue university levelstudies while still attending secondaryschool. In May of each year, studentsmay wish to write the standardized APchallenge exam in the course offeredby their school. Students have anopportunity to receive advanced creditat many universities across Canada, theUnited States, and around the World.Advanced Placement Exams trainstudents in taking high level tests, get ahead start on university-level work anddevelop the study habits necessary fortackling rigorous course work essentialfor success at the tertiary level ofeducation. Students wishing to writethe exam should contact their guidancedepartment for more information.Due to the rigorous nature of the APexam, some schools will be offering aPre-AP program for students prior tograde 12. A Pre-AP program allowsstudents the time to expand and enhancetheir understanding of the subjectmaterial being tested during the examwhile still meeting the requirements ofthe Ontario Curriculum. School Within A College (SWAC) - Isoffered by Conestoga in Brantford (Fitand Wellness / Media), Fanshawe inSimcoe (Human Services / Intro toTrades) and Mohawk in Ohsweken(Intro to Trades). If you are betweenthe ages of 17 and 20 years old andneed 5 – 10 credits to graduate, speakto your guidance counsellor about thisprogram.
