America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhoodfrom sea to shining sea.”“America the Beautiful” text, Katherine L. Bates; Music, Samuel A WardAs we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day, we may ponder what life was like for Catholics in our country in the late 18th century. There is an article by Marian T. Horvat entitled,“LetNone Dare Call it Liberty: The Catholic Church in Colonial America,” that sheds light on thestrong anti-Catholic ethos that existed during the time of independence. Dr. Horvat remindsus that in 1785 the Catholic community had no Bishop and approximately 25 priests! “In thecolonial period, a virulent anti-Catholicism reigned and the general hounding and harrying of Catholics was supported by legislation limiting their rights and freedom.” Catholics were often called“papists” and were looked upon with suspicion due to their allegiance to the Pope. Certain states, such as Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York were more tolerant than others that even bannedpublic worship.1789 was a pivotal year for our nation and Catholicism. “For 1789 marked both the formation ofthe new government under the Constitution and the establishment of an organizational structurefor the American Catholic Church. The former event came with the inauguration of George Washington in April, the latter with the papal appointment of His Excellency John Carroll as the firstBishop of Baltimore in November.” We have come quite a long way with the United States havingthe world’s fourth largest Catholic Population at approximately 75 million members and 22% of ournation’s total population. This July 4th weekend, may we never take our religious liberty for granted and seek for ways tobe both faithful Catholics and proud and productive members of our American Society.- - Fr. Dennis3

Amen.July 2 - 5 The Church Officewill be Closed and willre-open Tuesday, July 6 at9:00 a.m.FEAST OF FAITH Little MysteriesTwo small rites—or, as one liturgist has calledthem, “little mysteries”—accompany the preparationof the gifts. The priest or deacon takes a small cruetof water from the server and adds a drop of water tothe wine. Then, after the elevation of the chalice(and the incensation, if incense is used), the priestwashes his hands. Both of these actions were atfirst practical, matter-of-fact realities: in the ancientworld the wine was usually quite thick, and wasgenerally mixed with water before it was drunk. Andin the early church, when the faithful brought forward a great variety of gifts at this time, there was adefinite need for the presider to wash his hands! But now these rites serve a purely symbolic function. The mingling of the water and wine is accompanied by a prayer that speaks of the wonderful exchange of the Mass, the mingling of Christ’s divinityand our humanity. And as the priest washes hishands, he prays words of supplication from Psalm51, acknowledging his own sinfulness in the presence of the assembly before he dares to approachthe altar for this most sacred action.Happy 4th of JulyFr. Please join us for the new CatholicScripture study on the Letter to the Galatians in the New Testament, which willbegin onsite on Thursday July 22nd from 7 – 8:30 PM and will meet every Thursday evening until August 1212h in the McDonald Family Center Gym.This Letter was written by St. Paul to the Galatian faith community, which was struggling withwhether Gentile Christians needed to be circumcised and follow the dietary and purity regulations of first century AD Judaism. St. Paul emphatically affirms that salvation is through beliefin Jesus Christ, whose faith led Him to the Cross. The faith of Jesus Christ and faith in Him issufficient for full membership in the Christian faith community. This Letter was also a keydoctrinal text for Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Please join us for a livelyand interactive reflection and discussion of this Letter to the early Church which was strugglingwith what it means to be a Christian, a struggle that continues to our time.Gail Dereszewski will be the leader.
