G.A.M.E.S.GET ACTIVE & MAKE EVERYONE SWEATA Lunchtime Activity Club for Grade 6/7 Students at Kathleen McNeely ElementaryBy Carina Ip and Lauren O’Leary

Starting in January 2015, we will be implementing an Active Club entitled: G.A.M.E.S. (Get Active &Make Everyone Sweat) at Kathleen McNeely Elementary School in Richmond, BC. This club will meetevery Thursday at lunchtime, from 12:00pm to 12:30pm.Mission Statement:The goal of this active club is to increase the amount of activity students receive at school each week.We want to relieve anxiety students feel around lunchtime activities, while focusing on relationshipbuilding between students, as well as with teachers.Themes:Our Active Club will be enacted between January 8th and June 4th. We have based our games on 5themes we believe best encapsulate the current BC curriculum drafts for Physical Education in Grade6/7. We will spend 4 weeks focusing on each theme, playing 2 different games that demonstrate thetheme. Playing each game for two weeks allows for students to gain a greater understanding of how toplay the game, and will lead to more difficult extensions.1. January 8th to January 29th: Strategy Gamesa. Crazy Ball, Bean Boozled2. February 5th to February 26th: Teamwork Gamesa. Tennis, Keep Up3. March 5th to April 9th (Spring Break March 19th and 26th): Body Awareness Gamesa. Ladder Relay, Hungry! Hungry! Hippos!4. April 16th to May 7th: Quick Thinking Gamesa. Rock Paper Scissors Push, Pool Noodle Fencing5. May 14th to June 4th: Target Gamesa. Disc Golf Target Game, SkittlesStudentsAt McNeely, there are 89 students in grade 6/7. We anticipate that we will get between 20-50 studentsfor each active club. We are prepared to instruct any amount of students: we will adapt the activitieseach Thursday to accommodate the number of students that show up.Instructors:Carina Ip and Lauren O’Leary will be running the sessions each Thursday.Week One:During the first session, we will outline our expectations for the club, including our Mission Statement. We will also encourage students to come to us with different games they believe would be appropriatefor the Club. We will do our best to incorporate any games suggested by the students throughout theyear.

Warm Ups:The warm ups we choose will be short in duration and require minimal instruction. The reason for this isbecause we have a limited amount of time (30 minutes) to get through what we want to achieve perweek. The warm ups may go along with the theme of the month or will simply get the students moving. Line TagHula-Hoop Linked Relay Race (Teamwork)Human Pretzel (Teamwork)Limbo (Body Awareness)MacarenaGuided Movement Around the Gymo Students will be moving around the gym, and they may have to jump on one foot, orgallop, skip, change directions and etc.Skip RopeOctopusHuman Bop-It (Body Awareness)o Actions would be Kick it, Twist it, Spin it, Pull it, Bop it.Run Buggy RunFront to Fronto Students will follow actions that the teacher calls out. For example when the teachercalls out “knee to knee” students will pair up and have their knees touch, if the teachercalls out “change”, students change partners.Cool Downs:For cool downs, we may repeat a warm up game that is less active if time is allotted. Students atMcNeely play first and eat lunch after. We will have short cool downs, but will allow students to selfregulate during their 30-minute eating time before class.

STRATEGY GAMES:Title: Crazy BallType of Game: Strategy; Teamwork; Invasion;JanuaryTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:Crazy ball is an original game that requires teams to find a strategy that best works for them. Similarto hockey, crazy ball requires teams to work together to score a goal on their opponents net. Insteadof hockey sticks, equipment such as pool noodles and paddles will be used. Students will need toestablish which equipment is most useful for each position, as well as determine the most effectiveway to use their equipment. This activity does not give students who have previously played hockeyan advantage, as the equipment used is so different. It levels the playing field so students of allabilities can be comfortable playing.Required Supplies: Pool NoodlesPaddlesNetsPinniesAny other equipment: skipping ropes, plungers, scoopers, etc. BallsDescriptionSafety Notes: Clear boundaries in the gym will beestablishedBenches will be moved out of the wayStudents will not hit other students withany of the equipment1. Students will be split into 2 or 4 teams (depending on numbers)2. Each time will be given various equipment to use: pool noodles, paddles, plungers, etc.3. They will have 1 minute to decide which equipment each student will have, focusing on whatwill be the most effective for different positions (eg. Goalie)4. The objective is to score a goal in the other teams net (similar to hockey)5. Each time the ball goes into the net it is one point*Teams will switch who they are playing periodically, so each team gets a chance to play the othersAdaptation and ApplicationOnce students understand the basic strategies involved, a second ball can be introduced to each ofthe games. Different equipment can be used each game, so the students are constantly having toadapt to what they are using. If needed, a larger game with 2 nets on each side, and 3 balls can beused if only two teams have been made

Title: Bean Boozled / Treasure huntType of Game: Strategy; Capture the Flag; JanuaryTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:This game is inclusive of everyone, and accommodates for different skill sets. Everyone in the game isable to participate as either offense or defense. Both roles are equally important in the game.Required Supplies: Bean bagsCratePylons (for separating sides)PinniesSafety Notes: Students are not to touch students whohave successfully retrieved a bean bagEmphasize that when tagging a student, itshould be done so with respect and withoutgreat force.Description1. Set upa. Pylons along midline of gymb. 10 bean bags spread out on either side of the gym at the backc. 1 crate at the centre back of the gym on both sides2. Split class into two sides by numbering students off 1 and 23. Instruct the class that the goal of the game is to retrieve all the bean bags from the other sideof the gym and put them into the crate on their side.4. Students must run to the other side to retrieve the bean bags, once they have touched a beanbag or ran past the back line they are considered safe.5. If students leave their side of the gym, they can be tagged by the opposing team. Oncetagged, the player must return to the midline before returning to retrieve a bean bag.6. To bring a bean bag back to their crate, students must balance the bean bag on their headand walk it back to their crate. If the bean bag falls along the way, the bag must be returnedto its original position. And the student must run back to their zone.7. Students with bean bags on their head cannot be tagged or blocked.8. Bean bags in crates cannot be stolen.Adaptation and ApplicationStudents will begin in 2 teams, and for a further meeting time we can split the gym into quarters. Therefore there would be 4 teams that would play against each other. This would change the strategyof the game because there are multiple areas for students to retrieve bean bags, it would be a timedgame. At the end of a time interval, a count of the bean bags will determine who wins. Or when allbean bags have been retrieved, a count can be done.

TEAMWORK GAMES:Title: Tennis (Soccer)Type of Game: Invasion; Teamwork; FebruaryTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:This game focuses on teamwork, as all players need to work together to be successful. There are alsoelements of offensive and defensive play, so students can increase their proficiency in both. There areno outs in this game, as teams are constantly rotating – this means that students will be active for thewhole 30 minutes.Required Supplies: Soccer ballsPinniesSafety Notes: Soccer ball must stay on the ground at alltimes – no chippingDescription1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.Students will be split into 3 equal teamsOne team will be along the centre line, they will be the “net”The other two teams will be on each side of the “net”One team will start with the soccer ball. They must pass the ball 5 times (at least), beforetrying to get it through the net. While they are trying to make the 5 passes, two players from the “net” will go into their zoneand try to get the ballThe “net” is trying to stop the ball from going through. If they are successful, they switchplaces with the team who kicked the ballIf they get it through the “net”, they score one pointWhen the ball gets through net, the other team tries to do the same thing. Two new playersfrom the “net” will go in and try to defend*Although technically there will be a score, it will not be made a priority – often when playing thisgame students forget to keep score and are more focused on the specific pointAdaptation and ApplicationA second soccer ball can be added once students understand the basic concepts of the game. This willmake it more difficult for the “net”, and will have each of the other teams constantly moving. If two players is not enough, a third player from the “net” can go in and defend each time.

Title: Keep UpType of Game: Volleyball; Teamwork; FebruaryTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:This game focuses on teamwork, as each member of the team has to touch the ball in order to gain apoint for their team. Teams will have to work together, and figure out a strategy that works for them. There will be no competition between teams, as groups will be working on beating their own scores. As students have gone through an entire volleyball unit, they should have enough skill to completethis activity without problem. It will recall on the skills they previously learned to be successful.Required Supplies: Volleyballs – one for each teamSafety Notes: We are focusing on sets/bumps – studentswill understand they are not spiking the ballduring the drillDescription1. Students will be split into groups of 52. The objective of the game is to keep the volleyball up in the air, with each person on the teamtouching it once3. If every student touches the ball once, the team will get one point4. After a few minutes, the instructor will stop the teams, asking them what strategies they havebeen using – what is working, what isn’t5. After talking about different strategies, teams will get back in to their groups, with the aim ofbeating their own scores from before*Teams will be attempting to beat their own scores, and not competing against other teamsAdaptation and ApplicationThe groups of 5 can be merged together to create groups of 10, which will be much more difficult, requiring increased teamwork. If the students are having a lot of trouble with this drill, softer, large balls (beach balls) can be used atfirst to get them comfortable, before introducing volleyballs.

BODY AWARENESS GAMES:Title: Ladder RelayType of Game: Relay; Body Awareness; MarchTime required: 15 - 20 minutesRationale:The Ladder Relay Race is a game that will challenge students to be aware of their body as they arerunning. It will also foster teamwork and the competitive spirit as this game is set as a duel match.Required Supplies:Safety Notes: Students will need to be aware of theirbodies as they are sitting on the floor as the‘ladder rungs’. They are to be sitting stilland straight in order not to trip the runner.Description1. Students will be split into 2 groups2. The students line up on two parallel lines in the gym and are instructed to have atleastone meter between each student.3. Students sit on the parallel lines with their bottoms touching the line and legs facingtowards the other team.4. The goal of the game is to have all students run through the ladder as fast as possible.5. Starting from one end of the ladder, the first student will get up and run through theladder, touch the wall and run back to the other side of the gym (not through the ladder)and sit back in their spot. Then the next student will run through the ladder, run back tothe other side of the gym and go through the ladder again to get back to their originalspot. And this continues until all students have gone through the ladder.6. It will be encouraged that students cheer for their teammates and keep still during thegame.Adaptation and ApplicationFor added difficulty, students may have to balance a bean bag on their head while going through theladder. Students may also be required to run through the ladder every time they are going from wallto wall.To simplify the game the groups can be split into 4 lines. 4 teams would reduce the social pressureand make it easier for students to get through the ladder.

Title: Hungry! Hungry! Hippos!Type of Game: Invasion; Body Awareness; AprilTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:This is an original game that will require students to work together to move “food” to their“stomachs” without using their hands. Students will practice using different parts of their body tocarry and move items. This will allow students to create new strategies to be most efficient inretrieving items.Required Supplies: Hula hoops“Garbage”o Pinnieso Rubber chickenso Ballso Inflatable ballso Other items.DescriptionSafety Notes: Students are not to push or steal from eachother during the transport of foodIf two groups are going for the same fooditem, the first person to touch the food getsto try transporting it to their hula hoop1. Students will be split into 2 or 4 teams, depending on the number of students present. Idealnumber of players per team is 10-14.2. The objective of the game is to retrieve as many “food items” as possible.3. Teams will each have a hula hoop that will be their stomach in a corner of the gym, and theymust fill it with as much “food” as possible.4. “Food” items are in the centre of the gym.5. In order to move the items from the centre of the gym to their stomachs, students must carrythe “food” items using their bodies. Students can work together to “sandwich” items.6. Students are not allowed to touch/move the objects with their hands. They are also notallowed to kick “food” items, “food” cannot be touching the ground for more than 5 secondsafter it has been moved out of the centre (5 second rule!).7. There is no stealing allowed.8. If a “food” item is dropped outside the centre, and not in a hula hoop, it must be returned tothe centre, this can be done with hands.9. When all the food items have been retrieve the team with the most “food” wins.Adaptation and ApplicationIf the game is too quick, then students will be given more limitations. An example rule could be that 3students per team must be touching a “food” item while it is in transport (hands are still not allowed).

QUICK THINKING GAMES:Title: Pool Noodle FencingType of Game: Quick Thinking; Balance; AprilTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:Pool noodle fencing is an engaging, fun activity that children of all abilities can enjoy. Balance is animportant part of this activity, along with being able to think quickly and finding a strategy that worksfor you. This activity requires the students to rely solely on themselves, which is a little different thanmost of the other games we are presenting – but is a skill we believe is necessary to create life-longphysical literacy.Required Supplies: Pool Noodles (for each student)Yogurt Containers (for each student)Small Gator Balls (for each student)Safety Notes: Students will be aware that hitting anotherstudent above the neck is unacceptableThere needs to be enough space betweengroups – get students to spread out beforestartingDescription1. Students will be put into pairs (if there is an odd number of students, there can be onegroup of 3 who will have to switch off)2. Each student will have a pool noodle, a yogurt container an a small gator ball3. In one hand, the student will hold the yogurt container, balancing the gator ball on top4. In their other hand, they will hold their pool noodle5. The goal of the game is to knock the other students gator ball off of their yogurtcontainer, while keeping your ball balanced6. Students will be reminded that if their gator ball falls off because it was not properlybalanced, their partner will get a point*Although points are awarded for successfully knocking your partners gator ball off the yogurtcontainer, there will be no emphasis on winners/losers at the end of the sessionAdaptation and ApplicationIf students are having a lot of trouble balancing their gator balls on the yogurt containers, anadaptation can be made where the objective is to hit the other students shoe with the pool noodle togain a point. As we will be doing this activity for two weeks, the goal could be to work up to balancinga gator ball while “fencing”.

Title: Rock, Paper, Scissors, PushType of Game: Fleeing; Quick thinking; MayTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:Students will learn to pay attention and be focused on team members and opponents.Required Supplies:Safety Notes: Students must be careful when running andcontrol their speed.Description1.2.3.4.Teams of 3 will be created.Model a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.Students are lined up on either side of the gym in their teams. The first person in each team line up will meet in the middle of the gym with their opposingteam.5. In the middle they will play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Winner gets to move forward andspeed walk towards the opposing team. The teacher will model what speed walking looks likeand what it does not look like.6. The loser of Rock, Paper, Scissors must run back to their team, and the next person in line willmeet the winner wherever they are in the gym. The goal is get from one side of the gym tothe other.7. The next player plays against the current winner. Whoever wins gets to move forward, theloser must run back to their team.Adaptation and ApplicationDifferent movements can be incorporated in the game such as only hopping, or jumping on one foot. The game Rock, Paper, Scissors can also be modified to be cross-curricular. Instead of the normalgame students can play Rock, Paper, Scissors but with numbers of fingers and addition.

TARGET GAME:Title: Disc Golf Target GameType of Game: Target Game; MayTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:Disc Golf combines ultimate frisbee with golf. Students are required to work with a teammate (groupsof 3 could also be used) to hit a number of targets either around the school, or in the gym. Studentshave to focus on how they will work together to accomplish the goals of this game. Ideally this activitywill be done outside, as there is a greater amount of targets that can be used; however, it could beadapted to be done in the gym as well.Required Supplies: Frisbees – one for each pair (or groupof 3)List of targetsSafety Notes: Students will be talked to about awarenessof their surrounding when throwing aFrisbee. No Frisbees should be thrown at otherstudents or people they may run into if theyare outsideStudents will be told that under nocircumstances will living things be used astargets – including plants, or wildlifeDescription1. Students will be put into groups of 2 (groups of 3 are ok if there is an uneven number)2. Students will be given a list of targets to hit with their frisbee (if outside examples of targetsare: slide, east wall, telephone pole)3. Students may not walk/run with a frisbee in their hand, it must be thrown in order to getcloser to the target4. Students must alternate who throws the frisbee5. When students have hit all the targets, they must throw the frisbee back to the starting pointto be finished.Adaptation and ApplicationThis activity can be done inside or outside, depending on the weather. If done outside, there could bean adaptation where there was a theme involved with the targets. For example, students could beasked to hit 10 targets that are green, and write them down.

Title: SkittlesType of Game: Target Game; Dodging; JuneTime required: 25 - 30 minutesRationale:Students will be able to work on their aiming skills as well as defending skills. This is a fun and fastgame that will allow students to play either offense or defense.Required Supplies: 20 pylons or bowling pins Gator balls 20 Hula-hoops PinniesDescriptionSafety Notes: Students should be respectful whenthrowing the balls. For example, if theiropponent is in close proximity they do notneed to smash the ball into their opponent.1. Set upa. Put 10 pylons at the back of opposing sides of the team. Use the hula-hoops as a nodefense area by putting them around each pylon.b. Set up balls at the centre line of the gym like dodgeball2. Students will be split into 2 teams.3. The goal of the game is to knock out all of the opposing teams pylons or when all the playersof the opposing team are out.4. Balls must be thrown underhand and can be stopped if caught. They can also be blocked byanother ball, they cannot be kicked away. If kicked, the kicker is considered out.5. Students are “out” if they are hit under the waist by a ball, in which case they must go to theback of the gym on their side and have their backs against the wall. They can re-enter thegame once one of their teammates knocks down a pylon.6. Students cannot cross the half way line, and cannot enter the no-defense area inside thehula-hoops. If a pylon is knocked down, they are to remain knocked down.Adaptation and ApplicationTo increase the complexity of the game, the students can be split into 4 teams. Students can also beinstructed only to throw with their non-dominant hand.
