Letter from the Executive DirectorBoardHeroes. Who are they? What do they look like? What do they do? What dothey wear? Do you envision a person in a cape? Wearing a mask? Flying in to savethe day?ChairmanJana Phillis GrimmI think of heroes that do not wear capes Over the past year, the phrase Health Care Heroes has been coined to honorthose who have given selflessly during the COVID-19 pandemic. I cannot thinkof a more fitting description. You may associate this term with doctors and nurseswho have put their own safety, and that of their family, in jeopardy to care for us. Yetthe term is much broader in its meaning. A Health Care Hero is anyone workingin a health care setting. This could be a nurse, doctor, housekeeper, maintenanceworker, food service worker, and more. These individuals work together each day toensure your health, wellness and safety. In this edition of the Foundation Insider, you will see examples of WashingtonHealth System Health Care Heroes. You will also learn about donors like youwho support our team’s efforts to care for patients. We consider you a HealthCare Hero for supporting us during this pandemic and every day.Thank you for your generosity. I hope you enjoy learning more about WHSFoundation and how your support helps move our health system forward.Sincerely,Sara Schumacher, CFREExecutive DirectorVice ChairmanDennis E. Donors Help School of Nursing Pivot toRemote Learning during COVID-19August 2020 WHS School of Nursing GraduatesIn 2020, COVID-19 forced WHSSchool of Nursing to pivot the deliveryof the curriculum - adapting lectures, testing, and clinical experiences - to avirtual reality and it worked. Studentsadapted well, and there was no stoppageof the program.Donors helped make faculty andstudent success possible. School ofNursing alumni helped purchase allin-one computers for faculty, iPadsfor students, and software to facilitateremote instruction and testing during2020 campus shutdowns. When schoolre-opened, students were back to learnand complete clinical experiences in thehospital – clinical experiences that noother class of student nurses ever had.“While it has not gone asplanned, the past year hasfilled my mind with knowledgethat will prepare me to be anurse. COVID-19 played aspecial role and has impactedvirtually every part of my lifeand the lives of my peers, atschool and at home. This will forge our class intodedicated, highly adaptivenurses. Our perseveranceshows that our class has theendurance to thrive in difficultenvironments.”Ethan Fahey, Nursing Student, graduating in April 2021The school has also received CARES ActHigher Education Emergency Relief Fundgrants to provide emergency financial aidto students and help purchase additionaltechnology and equipment.Founded in 1897, WHS School of Nursingproudly claims over 4,000 alumni and areputation for a quality nursing program. For more information on the school, visithttps://whs.org/school-of-nursing/.WHS Greene CHF Programreceives CFGC grantPictured are CHF Team Members: David Frye,Transition Coordinator Registered Nurse;James Richardson, MD, CHF ClinicMedical Director; Roxanne Vranek,Heart Failure NavigatorThe WHS Greene Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Program hasexpanded to enroll additional CHF patients in the once-a-weekclinic thanks to a grant from the Community Fund of the CommunityFoundation of Greene County. Staunton FarmFoundation andSouthwest TrainingServices - Investingin Innovative VirtualSummer CampsThe Common Ground Teen Center hadto close its doors March 16, 2020 alongwith schools and other public places.Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, WHS TeenOutreach Executive Director, recognizedthe need for young people to have peercontact and support, especially duringthe uncertainty of the pandemic, andresponded by launching a virtual TeenCenter via Zoom - the next day, March17, not skipping a beat.Over the next three months, teens shareda wide range of emotions. The quarantineand its ramifications, especially with highschool seniors, created anger, tearsand venting. Some teens were referredfor counseling for signs of depression.Building on the three month relationshipsthat were developed virtually, TeenOutreach’s Peer Educators createdthe idea of virtual summer camps. Theydecided to target 12 – 14 year olds, an“age when kids feel lonely and confused.”Eight free virtual camps were held InJune and July - Art Camp, Book Lovers/Writers Camp, Computer Camp, CulinaryCamp, Games Camp, PhotographyCamp, Theater Camp, and WellnessCamp. Each camp included dailyactivities and was supervised by a PeerEducator, a Junior Peer Educator and anAdult Facilitator.Staunton Farm Foundation in Pittsburghand Southwest Training Services,Inc., provided grants to support thecamps. They were so well received thatVirtual Holiday Camps were offered inDecember. These camps have spun offinto Art and Cooking Clubs.04 WHSF: The InsiderSpooktacular See Saw Marathon: TeensMobilize Community Donors to KeepCommon Ground Teen Center OpenWashington County teens put together a unique and successful fundraiser – a seesaw marathon - when funding for the Common Ground Teen Center in Washingtonwas threatened in Fall 2020. Over 325 people donated over 55,000 to keep theCenter open. The 24-hour See Saw Marathon was held October 30-31. It was a joint project of theWHS Foundation Students Helping Others Committee and the WHS Teen OutreachPeer Education program. Amy Podgurski-Gough, WHS Teen Outreach CommunityCoordinator, suggested the idea and provided support during the teen-run event.“Our annual budget to operate the Teen Center is 106,000. We received only 25,000 for the first six months of the year,” Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, Teen OutreachExecutive Director, explained.Alumni of the Center and Peer Educator programs donated, wrote testimonials, andvolunteered during the See Saw Marathon. Teens of all ages donated in sums of 10- 50 – a large gift from their often-limited means. The Common Ground Teen Center is an incredibly successful, teen-driven center - aspace created for and by young people, where all young people are respected. Youngpeople run the Center with supervision by young adult alumni and students fromW & J College. The Center hosts bi-monthly events like Rock the Vote, Art Night forthe community, Games Night, Peer Education, Parent/Youth Programming, RespectOnline workshops, and more. Dr. Podgurski opened the Center in 2008. In 12 years, over 2,500 unique teens have attended for over 33,000 visits!CovidThank You’s“Thank you for all you doto keep the communitywell & safe! You are reallife super heroes!”Mark Emerson, Community Member

WHS Employees Give Back through Employee Giving CampaignEvery day, employees at WHS perform amazing acts ofkindness. Another way our employees care for patients andtheir families is through the annual Employee Giving Campaign,“Giving Feels Good.” Last fall, WHS employees generouslycontributed 102,278.69 to support the programs and serviceslisted below: Area of Greatest NeedChildren’s Therapy CenterCongestive Heart Failure (CHF) ProgramDonnell HouseEmployee Assistance FundPatient Assistance FundTeen OutreachWHS GreeneCovidThank You’sEmployee contributions have a significant impact on the healthand well-being of our community. Since 1989, WHS Employeeshave donated nearly 2.5 million back to the hospital andits programs.Thank you to ourextraordinaryemployees!G IVI NGFE E LSGOOD!“Thank you so much for everything you do forthis community. Thank you for your willingnessto give of yourself to help those who are unableto help themselves.”Linda Shaw, Community MemberSparking Improvements in our Health SystemIn 2019, WHS announced a “Spark Tank” contest to employees.Staff members were asked to submit innovative ideas that wouldhelp patients, their families, volunteers, physicians and staff. TheSpark Tank Contest was created as an opportunity to becomean innovative organization and complement the health system’svision to remain a leader in healthcare quality, safety and value. One of the Foundation’s generous and longtime donors,Washington Auto Mall, heard about the contest and wanted toget involved. Now the official sponsor for the current round ofthe contest, the Auto Mall was a natural fit. Washington AutoMall believes in giving back to make our community a betterplace to live, work and play. The contest’s committee narrowed down the 48 entriesreceived, and WHS employees helped choose the winner. AprilWokaly from Medical Records had the winning idea – a virtualmeal ordering system. April’s idea gives employees an onlineoption to order meals from the cafeteria ahead of time, resultingin shorter lines and more time for the employee to enjoy theirlunch while on break. To read more about Spark Tank and Washington Auto Mall’sconnection, please visit whs.org/sparktanksponsor.WHSF: The Insider 05
