IEP PROGRAMMISSION STATEMENTThe Intensive English Program at the University of Southern Indiana strives to provide quality Englishlanguage instruction and cultural, social, and academic orientation to the United States for non-native students.We help our students to be successful in a university academic program or to achieve professional and personallanguage goals. We support the students' integration into the general university culture while respecting theirown culture, traditions, and values.As part of the Center for International Programs, the IEP works to enhance the international dimensions of theUniversity and to connect international students to the campus and local communities.What is the Intensive English Program?The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of Southern Indiana offers a curriculum designed forstudents of all levels of English proficiency based on student needs and interests. As an IEP student, you willhave the opportunity to learn side-by-side with students from all over the world in a quality English languageprogram staffed with expert instructors.7

OrientationNew StudentsOrientation for new students occurs one week before classes begin. During orientation, students learn moreabout USI/IEP, get help with the necessary USI documentations, health insurance, banking, and information USIAcademics, Facilities, and Policy. PLACEMENT AND ASSESSMENTPlacementA CaMLA placement test (plus an in-house writing component) will be administered to every new student todetermine the appropriate level of instruction.During the first week of class, instructors may make recommendations for placement adjustment based on astudent's performance in classes. Students who believe they have been placed in the wrong level may make anappeal to the director.At the end of each session, students in levels 4 and 6 will take the itpTOEFL test to measure the students’readiness to continue to the more academic subset of the program at level 4 or to complete the IEP at level 6.AssessmentIn order to pass to the next level or graduate, students need to achieve overall 80% in each class.Assessment is includes projects, quizzes, mid-term and final exams, as well as attendance. If a student fails oneclass within a level, he or she will need to repeat the whole level.*Students graduating from the Intensive English Program will receive a certificate of completion and will be ableto pursue their future interests.Students can obtain their final grades through MyUSI. The IEP Administrative Assistant will e-mail all end-of-thesession reports to the students’ USI eagles email.(*)Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis—see Appendix 512

GRADUATE STUDENTSThe University welcomes graduate students from other countries and cultures who bring to the campus the richheritage of their countries. In return the University is eager to share American opportunities and culture.Materials sent to the Graduate Studies office are used to determine the eligibility of applicants.Criteria for admission to Graduate Studies at the University of Southern Indiana Applicants must have an overall minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.5Transcripts Official transcripts in a sealed envelope from a certified National Association of Credential EvaluationServices (NACES) memberoAll official transcripts must have the course by course evaluationoApplicants who have taken coursework and/or received a degree from the University ofSouthern Indiana will not need to obtain an official USI transcript.Official verification of English competency The USI code for testing purposes is 1335 Submit an official (photocopy not acceptable) TOFEL or International English Language Testing System(ILETS) score report verifying a minimum total score of one of the following:ooo 550 on the paper-based TOEFL (or79 on the internet-based TOEFL, or6 on the IELTS testTOFEL and ILETS scores must be less than two years old(*) For more information on requirements for application to a graduate program:Graduate Studies Admission13

TOEFL REQUIREMENTSStudents may apply for undergraduate or graduate admission and admission to the Intensive English Programsimultaneously.UNDERGRADUATE: Conditional admission without TOEFL or IELTS upon successful completion of IEP to the University of SouthernIndiana will be granted for students whose academic or professional qualifications are very good but whose Englishlanguage needs improvement.Students will need to graduate from the Intensive English Program in order to be eligible to enroll in a major at USI.Due to the competitive nature of the programs at USI, acceptance into the academic program also depends uponmeeting the requirements set by each individual program. If additional documents are needed, you will becontacted by the Admission representative.If you are already proficient in English and do not need IEP, please refer to the acceptable proficiency tests below: TOEFL - IBT minimum 71, PBT minimum 527 IELTS – minimum 6.0 Cambridge English Advanced – minimum 169 EIKEN – minimum Grade Pre-1* Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) – minimum 55*GRADUATE: Graduate students can apply as non-degree seeking for the Intensive English Program only and can apply for agraduate program while attending English classes. Graduate students have to submit a minimum ibtTOEFL score of79 or a minimum IELTS score of 6 for application purposes. Higher scores may be required for some programs.Students should check for additional program requirements before applying.TOEFL TESTINGWe are proud to announce that the University of Southern Indiana is an official ETS ibt TOEFL testing center.To sign up to take the test, register through the ETS website.The same rules and regulations apply as indicated on the official ETS website.Testing LocationThe ibt TOEFL exam is administered in the Miller Language Lab (Room 0120) in the lower level of the LiberalArts Center on the USI campus. If registered after classes start, students will be charged a late registration fee.After completing the late registration process online, go to View Bills/Pay Online to view your balance and payfees.(*) Only in exceptional circumstances will you be allowed to late register after the first week of the term.15

CLASS SCHEDULEThe IEP class schedule changes each session and is based on the enrollment of students in the program.Students in the IEP are notified by email prior to the beginning of a session in regards to the start date. LEVEL PROMOTIONIn order to pass to the next level or graduate, students need to achieve overall 80% in each class.Assessment includes projects, quizzes, mid-term and final exams, as well as participation and attendance. If astudent fails one class within a level, he or she will need to repeat the whole level. If a student gets below 80% inonly one class, he/she may complete a Grade Complaint Report and his/her promotion to the next level will beassessed.Class grades based on: Achievement of the student learning outcomes IEP Final Exam Score Overall performance and readiness to continue to the next levelTo pass to the next level, a student must: Pass each class with an 80% or better Attendance Levels 4 and 6 must pass itpTOEFL as part of their TOEFL class(*)Exceptions will be considered case by case.REPEATING A LEVELIf an IEP student does not meet the criteria and expected outcomes in a level, he/she will need to repeat thatlevel. It is not uncommon for English language learners to repeat in order to raise his/her level of Englishproficiency. However, students cannot repeat the same level for the fourth time. Students who do notdemonstrate the ability to pass the same level for a third time will be dismissed from the IEP. They are notmaking satisfactory progress in developing English language proficiency.(*) The Director of the IEP may make some exceptions based on medical circumstance and/or familyemergencies. Such situations will be evaluated on an individual basis.Students who are dismissed from the IEP due to low performance and lack of progress will be advised to either:1) Transfer to a different English program at another university or language school, or2) Return to their home countryThe Center for International Programs will be notified of the dismissal and a request for a transfer will be made,if applicable.Students dismissed for lack of progress who wish to return to USI may take the TOEFL or IELTS to demonstratelanguage ability to continue to the university at any point.17

TRANSITIONING FROM IEP TO THE UNIVERSITYFor students who are ready to exit the IEP, the director informs them individually the steps they will betaking to transition from the IEP to regular academic courses in the university.
