Library Facilities and ResourcesThe La Sierra University Library occupies a reinforced concrete structure, clad in red brick with awide white trim. Completed in 1973, the facility has a lower level and two above ground floors witha total space of about 58,000 square feet. The current seating capacity is 410. One of the Library’sprimary architectural features is a central glass-enclosed atrium extending from the ground to thetop of the upper level and covered by an attached shade cloth. The third floor includes a balconyaccess overlooking the lower floor of the atrium. This area is maintained as a garden space for bothstudy and socializing with lush plantings, a fountain, and patio furniture. The Library entered into a partnership with Pacific Union College in 2005 to share the InnovativeInterfaces, Inc. (III) Millennium Integrated Library System. This product supports a shared webbased public catalog and other library functions such as cataloging, acquisitions, circulation, andserials. The Library also participates with Pacific Union College and other III customers in theLINK consortium for borrowing and lending materials. The LINK group consists of about fortyfive California and Nevada academic and public libraries with access to about nine million uniquetitles. Since users are able to initiate LINK requests directly through the catalog and take advantage of courier delivery service, this efficient version of interlibrary loan is very popular with bothstudents and faculty. The Library participates in the Adventist Library Information Cooperative (ALICE) for group database purchases. The Library is also a member of the Statewide California Electronic LibraryConsortium (SCELC). This group of one hundred private academic and research libraries wasestablished to develop and promote resource sharing opportunities, primarily through the grouppurchases of electronic databases.Membership in OCLC, the world’s largest library cooperative organization, provides access to nearlyall the bibliographic records needed for the Library’s collections. Both cataloging and interlibraryloan services are expedited through use of this online network. The La Sierra University Library offers access to over one hundred online databases and a largecollection of electronic books through the Library’s web site. This site also includes the catalog forthe print and audiovisual collections, links to a wide array of additional resources, and informationregarding the Library’s services and policies. A proxy-server provides remote access to the Library’slicensed Internet resources for affiliated users. The Library’s Heritage Room houses special collections and the University archives. This collection of Seventh-day Adventist documents is the third largest in the world and is available to outsidescholars as well as campus patrons. This facility, also designated as an Ellen G. White ResearchCenter by the White estate, includes comprehensive holdings of E.G. White writings and relatedmaterials. The Library’s Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) supports School of Education courseswith a sample collection of K-12 textbooks. The children’s literature collection is also located in theCRC area. The Library provides thirteen public computers in the Reference area with Internet access, five computers intended for catalog searching, and four laptop computers for in-library use.
