Routing the trafficdidn’t pose an issue but placementof the barrier wall did. There was adifficult challenge on how to positionthese concrete traffic barriers underthe overpasses without harmingthem. To add to the challenge, theroadway also converged to only twolanes at these points.Using two telescopic handlers inunison, each fitted with a KencoKL9000 Barrier Lifter, they unloadedthe thirty-foot concrete trafficbarriers (CTB) from the delivery truckbeds. The CTB was then picked upand placed in the desired location,while flaggers maintained a cleartraffic lane during the operation.All of this was accomplishedwhile avoiding any damage to theoverhead structures and withoutdisruption to existing traffic. Theywere able to keep a lane openthroughout the entire constructionprocess.5

Due to the manner in which the Double Lift engages twowalls at once, special consideration must be taken for each lift. Wright Contracting of BeaverFalls, Pennsylvania.To ensure minimal impact to trafficflow, any work affecting roadsurfaces had to be accomplishedquickly. After digging the ditches,Wright Contracting used a KencoPL2750 Pipe Lift to handle the1700 pound sections of 24 inchductile iron. This lifting attachmenthas an automatic grip and releasemechanism that allowed machineoperators to maneuver the pipefrom within the cab. The 16 footlengths were positioned to enablethe ground crew to connect thesections together. The ditches werethen covered and the traffic lanesreopened. Using these methods,the project was completed onschedule and under budget.9
