Additionally, it provides a detailedlist of the 452 colleges and universities in the United States that awarded degrees in the fieldof Entrepreneurship and Small Business Operations.Review of Best PracticesThe Greater Richmond Partnership (GRP) research staff reviewed all of the IEDC’s publishedstudies, handbooks and newsletters from 2008 through 2014 and identified one publicationfrom 2011 that focused specifically on entrepreneurship training and which offered severalBest Practice examples.Unlocking Entrepreneurship: A Handbook for Economic DevelopersPrimary authors: Shari Garmise, PhD and Swati A. GhoshPublished by the International Economic Development Council, 2011A complete copy of this handbook will be provided via emailThis handbook states that “Post‐secondary education institutions – universities, communitycolleges, vocational schools and others – also play an essential role in building anentrepreneurial culture and educating entrepreneurs” (page 44).The handbook goes on to state that “entrepreneurship is one of the fastest‐growingundergraduate degrees, up from 104 formal programs in 1975 to more than 500 in 2006.A January 2014 analysis by the Greater Richmond Partnership indicated that in 2012, 452two and four year colleges that awarded 6,109 degrees in entrepreneurship and smallbusiness operations.

YEP is diverse in its outreach and delivery methods, withwebsites, blogs, social networking sites, virtual reality games, youth‐oriented trainers andbusiness simulation products all designed to teach business management, finance,marketing, sales and e‐commerce skills.Annual competitions are held for Business Concept (business plans) and an ElevatorCompetition (selling a business idea in the time it takes for an elevator ride).The ultimate desired outcome for YEP is to have young people more interested in self‐employment as a career option. Through YEP projects, students will also garner transferablebusiness skills for both self employment and the job market, understand the relevance ofeducation and choose to stay in school or pursue higher education, and develop lifemanagement and problem solving skills.Colleges and Universities Awarding Degrees and Certificates inEntrepreneurship and Small Business Operations in 2012Using data from the US Department of Education’s IPEDS database, there were 452 collegesand universities that awarded either degrees or certificates during 2012 under CIP Code52.07 ‐ Entrepreneurial and Small Business Operations.
