Procrastination willonly cause you problems with your grades in this class and all deadlines will be fairly anduniformly enforced. I strongly encourage you to treat this just like any other live class—setaside a dedicated time that you do your coursework, review this syllabus regularly toensure that you are on task, and meet your deadlines early for all assignments. DO NOTwait until the last hours to try to get your assignments and tests submitted—any loss ofinternet connection or miscalculation on the clock on your part that leads to failure to hityour deadlines will result in a zero for that particular grade.Class participation will be graded daily/weekly as I will assess your involvement andinteraction on the class discussion boards. NOTE: You will be required to respond to atleast one other student on every discussion board posting that is due at least two fulldays before the deadline for that board assignment. More information on classparticipation scoring can be found below under the Course Assignments and Deadlinessection. While online classes give you great flexibility in taking classes that will conform toyour schedules and lifestyles, do not assume that “online” equates to an “easy” class. DO read the syllabus and mark your calendars with course deadlines and examdates.DO read the emails sent to by the professor during the course. This will haveimportant tips, reminders, and information on testing and grading.DO think critically and debate your points with facts and well-written arguments!DO post early, respond to your classmates as you read their posts, and respond toyour messages on your posts.Boots Family Violence CRIM 7381 Course SyllabusPage 4

Any student who abuses these privileges will have their final gradepenalized accordingly and at my discretion.DO NOT use the discussion boards or email system in this class for anythingunrelated to this course.Email UseThis class is an online course, so email correspondence is vital to its success and to ensuregood communication. As such, I CANNOT respond to emailsfrom anything other than a UTD email account for YOUR protection.**Please address me as Dr. Boots in all email correspondence (and I do apologize tothose of you to whom this is common sense, but this has become enough of an issuethat I feel I must now put this in my syllabi for online classes to avoid awkwardsituations later on) at deniseboots@utdallas.edu. Also be aware that I am able to track in detail your access to all areas of the eLearningsystem by time and date for every student as well as the length of time each of youwere logged in. Please do not make statements which are patently dishonest about datesand times you were in the system or problems that actually did not occur to try to make acase for late submissions—this will be considered an act of academic dishonesty. I will firstverify all logon information if a student claims to have technical issues that have beenreported to the Help Desk.Students MUST have reliable access to a computer with an internet connection suchas a cable modem, DSL, or a T-1 connection, whether that be at home, at school, oranother location of their choice. You will be viewing documentaries in our class siteand a high-speed connection is a must. If you do not have a fast and/or reliable internetconnection at your home, you MUST to do your class work at an alternate location such as atUTD in the library or computer labs. This rule especially applies for exams, as once you login to the exam the timer will start on your test time. No extensions will be given if yourinternet connection is not reliable and your test will close within the allotted time windowregardless of whether you finish or not. This test grade will be final in the event this occurs. Please do not risk a zero on your exams!!!NOTE: The clock in eLearning determines cut offs for due dates and times, so matchyour clocks appropriately. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL CLOSE TO THE DEADLINE TOSUBMIT YOUR BOARD POSTS, SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS, OR TAKE YOUR EXAMS. Youshould submit all assignments DAYS (not an hour or minutes) before they are due.Academic IntegrityAcademic Dishonesty: The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibilityand academic honesty. Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absoluteintegrity of the work done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a studentdemonstrates a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.Academic dishonesty can occur in relation to any type of work submitted for academiccredit or as a requirement for a class. It can include individual work or a group project.Academic dishonesty includes, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication and collaboration/collusion.In order to avoid academic dishonesty, it is important for students to fully understand theexpectations of their professors. This is best accomplished through asking clarifyingquestions if an individual does not completely understand the requirements of anassignment.Additional information related to academic dishonesty and tips on how to avoid dishonestymay be found here: agiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, andfrom any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with to the fullest extentpossible under the university’s policy on plagiarism. The instructor reserves the rightto use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and isover 90% effective. See plagiarism handout in the Course Modules 1st day of class folder ofyour eLearning course.Boots Family Violence CRIM 7381 Course SyllabusPage 6

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS & DEADLINESWEEKLY ASSIGNED DISCUSSION BOARD POSTSInteraction on our class discussion boards is absolutely critical to the success of thecourse and your advanced learning of the material. These discussion boards serveas the only way for us to have interaction together in our virtual classroom andtherefore will be a major focus of your efforts in this course. I STRONGLY encourageyou to post early, post meaningfully, and to check back frequently to respond backto feedback given on your posts my myself and your classmates. Your participationand engagement of these class discussion boards will have a major impact on yourgrade in this class. If you post the majority of your responses to your classmates oryour original posts at the last minute, your grade will be adjusted to reflect your lackof effort accordingly. For each week of course material posted, you will have at least two assigneddiscussion board postings that correspond to your assigned readings from therequired texts and selected documentaries per the detailed COURSE CALENDAR atthe back of this syllabus.*For EACH successfully completed discussion board post assignment (exceptthe first week assignment) you may earn up to 7 points total:1. 5 POINTS FOR ORIGINAL POST- You will be required to submit an original postreply to the questions posed which is worth 5 points, AND2. 2 POINTS FOR CLASS PARTICIPATION- You will be required to submit at leastone response to a classmate for EACH ASSIGNED DISCUSSION BOARD POST for theiroriginal post at LEAST TWO DAYS (no less than 48 hours) PRIOR TO THEASSIGNMENT DUE DATE AND TIME FINAL DEADLINE . Read the section whichfollows for detailed instructions on how to complete these discussion boardassignments and their minimum requirements.NOTE: These discussion posts have firm due dates and THERE IS NO PARTIALCREDIT for discussion posts. Discussion board posts are automatically turned offfor access in eLearning at the due date and time until I release them for viewingafter final grading. I suggest you do your original post first and then respond toother students. You should check back regularly on your posts before the due dateto respond to any comments left. I will also provide feedback if your post is lackingsomehow when possible if your posts are put up well before the deadline so youhave time to revise them.Boots Family Violence CRIM 7381 Course SyllabusPage 8

DIRECTIONS FOR DISCUSSION BOARD POST ASSIGNMENTSPrior to posting your weekly discussion board assignments, you should:1.Review your course calendar carefully. Read all assigned readings fromthe texts and any assigned documentaries per your course calendar foreach weekly due date and time for your original posts AND your responsesto classmates.2. Access the Learning Modules in eLearning and review ALL supplementalmaterials under each weekly module that are assigned and posted. Thisincludes the Power Points for each chapter of the Barnett et al. textbook andassigned documentaries within the course.3. When reading and viewing are completed, click on the “DISCUSSIONS” link onthe far left side of your home eLearning course menu in eLearning and post youroriginal response to all discussion board questions I have posted for each weekof class. You must answer the question posted and your post must be an originalwork of your own. Make sure to follow the directions below for minimumexpectations to receive credit for your posts!4. DIRECTIONS FOR ORIGINAL REPLIES FOR DISCUSSION BOARD POSTS (dueby Sunday of each week and each post is worth 5 points): You are required to submit a MINIMUM of TWO CONSECUTIVEPARAGRAPHS. Each paragraph must contain at LEAST four complete sentences perparagraph with a hard return entry space separating the paragraphs so theyare distinguished from one another. Both paragraphs must be submitted in ONE posting (not in multiple posts). Each post must be written with proper English and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar to get credit. As this is a graduate course, Iexpect that this will not be an issue for you. However, if you struggle withwriting, I strongly recommend you write your post first in a Word document, check it for accuracy, and then transfer it in into eLearning when you aresatisfied it is correct and ready to post. You are welcome to write more (and I would expect you will!) than twoparagraphs if you wish. Always double check that the format and content of your postings is correctAFTER you post them. If something occurred during the posting thatrenders them non-compliant with these basic instructions on length andcontent you will be given a zero for that assignment unless you correct theproblem—sometimes this will mean having to repost your response!!Answers that are unclear, illogical, or that show little substantive effort willbe assigned a ZERO with NO PARTIAL CREDIT. Feel free to supplement responses with outside material but please properlycite all outside resources with a full reference besides the assigned texts.(Properly cited means including the name of source, author, date, name ofarticle/story, webpage URL, and/or publisher in APA format). Yourresponses should represent YOUR thoughts, beliefs, and ideas, not someoneBoots Family Violence CRIM 7381 Course SyllabusPage 9

else’s! DO NOT COPY ANY OTHER SOURCE VERBATIM WITHOUT QUOTES!!!Copying an outside source is considered plagiarism and academicdishonesty.Use quotes sparingly! These posts should be your opinion and not use fillerto reach the minimum requirements. Students who overrely on quotes willnot be given credit for their submissions. After you have completed your original post and checked it for accuracy incontent and formatting (hopefully two or three days before the finalassignment is due), post at least one response to a classmate’ssubmission for EACH DISCUSSION BOARD POST ASSIGNED FOR THATWEEK.5. DIRECTIONS FOR REPLYING ON OTHER STUDENT’S POSTS (each postis worth 2 points and is due no later than 48 hours before the finaldeadline for that week’s board assignments—or Fridays before 6pm):Remember that you are REQUIRED to post to at least one of your fellow studentson EACH DISCUSSION BOARD POST for class participation—you will be assigneda weekly grade AND a class participation grade at the end of the semester by me. ***Note that your post to a classmate on each discussion board is due atLEAST TWO DAYS (no less than 48 hours) PRIOR TO THE FINALDEADLINE FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT. This requirement is firm and whileposts will be taken after the deadline, you will not receive credit if your firstresponse to a classmate occurs less than 48 hours prior to the due date.Again, the success of our class is due to class participation and it is veryimportant for you to be engaged in our virtual classroom! You MUST make a substantive comment to get credit for replies to yourclassmates. “I agree” or “Great points here!” are NOT consideredsubstantive comments. I don’t dictate a minimum number of sentencesrequired here, but these should be meaningful interactions that createfurther discussion or responses on the boards. Proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar are expected in these posts as well as clarity of thought orquestions posed.6. For each week assigned in your syllabus, you will repeat exactly the same stepsas above for all assigned discussion board postings and responses to classmates.FINAL RESEARCH POWER POINT PRESENTATION PROJECTA significant part of your grade in this course will be determined by an academicallybased research presentation on an assigned topic related to family violence. You willbe creating this presentation in Power Point with comprehensive slide notes as an “expert”on domestic violence to a community-based group (see options below). A rubric isprovided in eLearning under this assignment and you should download this on the first dayof class.IMPORTANT: All presentations must be created in Power Point and submitted in.pptx format.Boots Family Violence CRIM 7381 Course SyllabusPage 10

You will have three combined graded assignments for this final research PowerPoint (see detailed section below and course calendar at back of syllabus):1. DUE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH BEFORE 6PM-Submit your selection ofTopic and Audience Choice in Assignments tab of eLearning (10 points)2. DUE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16th BEFORE 6P
