PROGRAM OVERVIEWHANDBOOK REVIEW AND REVISIONThe Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program Student and Clinical Handbook is designedto provide easily accessible information regarding the program. Students are expected to be familiar with theinformation presented in this handbook and with all college policies. In addition to this publication, studentscan access the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) academic catalog and student handbook.The information in this handbook does not imply any contractual relationship between the MetropolitanCommunity College District and its students. The handbook is not intended to replace or alter any collegepolicy or regulation. The material in this handbook may be modified or revoked at any time at the discretionof the district. Notice of changes will be communicated to students.PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program is a full-time, 24 month program consistingof six (6) semesters that is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in RadiologicTechnology (JRCERT).The curriculum is in alignment with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) requirements andcontains didactic and clinical components. Curriculum is competency based and is designed to develop healthcare professionals who possess entry-level skills in diagnostic imaging.Weekly schedules vary; however, the student should be prepared to spend up to 40 hours per week in theclassroom and clinical environment. Class scheduled vary by semester, but will be held between the hours of8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Clinical site education hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, clinicaleducation hours may vary by assignment.DEGREE AWARDEDUpon successful completion of the Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program, the studentwill be awarded an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology.PLACEMENT OF THE PROGRAM WITHIN THE METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ORGANIZATIONMetropolitan Community College—Maple Woods is the sponsoring institution of the Radiologic TechnologyProgram. Maple Woods is one of five community college campuses operated under the authority of theMetropolitan Community College District of Kansas City, Missouri. The district is governed by a Board ofTrustees and administered by a District Chancellor. Each college has a College President, a Dean ofInstruction, and a Dean of Student Services.College faculty are grouped into divisions of administration. The Radiologic Technology Program is in theDivision of Allied Health. The Division of Allied Health is located within the Health Science Institute.5

METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE MISSIONPreparing students, serving communities, creating opportunities.PROGRAM MISSIONTo graduate students who possess the skills, knowledge, and professional values required for an entry-levelradiographer to serve the needs of the community.PROGRAM PHILOSOPHYTo be functional members of society and the health care community, the individual must demonstrate civicresponsibility and self-confidence. The Maple Woods St. Joseph Site educational program in radiologicimaging integrates the study of liberal arts with comprehensive radiographic instruction and coordinatedclinical practice. These three disciplines of study comprise the three primary components of the Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program. These components aid the student in achieving theattributes required by the profession and the community which it serves. Admission and successfulcompletion of the program are determined by student achievement of clearly defined objectives, regardless ofrace, color, creed, national origin, or gender. Our ambition is to graduate compassionate individuals who careenough to exercise their minds, giving thought to their daily professional responsibilities, as well as to theworld in which they live. The Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program outcome assessment is conducted toreview the success of each graduating class in achieving the program goals and objectives. Annual review ofthe outcome assessments is conducted by the program faculty, advisory committee members, and campusleadership to evaluate program strengths and weaknesses, and to discern the necessity for change within theprogram curriculum. The program outcome assessment is available in the program coordinator’s office forreview.PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMESUpon completion of the Radiologic Technology Program, graduates will be able to:1. Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.2. Meet the clinical requirements of an entry-level radiographer, as defined by employers.3. Provide a safe environment for the patient and deliver age appropriate patient care in a variety ofclinical situations.4. Utilize appropriate radiation protection techniques for patients and personnel.5. Perform routine and non-routine radiographic imaging procedures.6. Evaluate radiographic images for proper diagnostic quality and take corrective action when needed.7. Implement critical thinking and problem solving.8. Educate the public and members of the healthcare team on the benefits and hazards of diagnosticradiation exposure.9. Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in support of the profession.10. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PROGRAM FACULTYIn order to provide students with a successful learning environment, program faculty are available forguidance in both didactic and clinical settings. Students should communicate questions or concerns to theappropriate program faculty member. RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM STANDARDSACCREDITATIONMetropolitan Community College is fully accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education ofthe North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the Missouri Department of HigherEducation and Workforce Development.The Radiologic Technology Program is recognized and accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educationin Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and is recognized as an approved educational program for certification inradiography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).The Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by:The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology20 North Wacker Drive, Suite 2850Chicago, Illinois 60606-3182(312) 704-5300Email: mail@jrcert.orghttp://www.jrcert.org/Program # 0479If an individual suspects or finds that the program fails to uphold the JRCERT standards for accreditation theindividual may submit the concern in writing to the program coordinator. Such a complaint will be reviewedby the program leadership and college administration, to determine the appropriate action or response forsuch complaint. If the JRCERT standards have been compromised, the program will make necessarymodification(s) within ninety days. If the program fails to respond appropriately, the individual may submit aformal complaint to the JRCERT. The program leadership and administrators will respond to any allegationsfrom the JRCERT and take appropriate action regarding the alleged infraction.JOINT REVIEW COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION IN RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS FOR AN ACCREDITEDPROGRAM IN RADIOGRAPHYAccording to the Introductory Statement of the Standards for an Accredited Educational Program inRadiography, “The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) Standards for anAccredited Educational Program in Radiography is designed to promote academic excellence, patient safety,and quality healthcare. The STANDARDS require a program to articulate its purposes; to demonstrate that ithas adequate human, physical, and financial resources effectively organized for the accomplishment of itspurposes; to document its effectiveness in accomplishing these purposes; and to provide assurance that it cancontinue to meet accreditation standards.The JRCERT accreditation process offers a means of providing assurance to the public that a program meetsspecific quality standards. The process helps to maintain program quality and stimulates programimprovement through program assessment.”9

There are six (6) standards each accredited program is expected to meet. Each standard includes a series ofobjectives. All standards and objectives must be met for a program to demonstrate compliance, therebymaintaining accreditation.Standard One: Integrity- “The program demonstrates integrity in the following: representations tocommunities of interest and the public, pursuit of fair and equitable academic practices, and treatment of, andrespect for, students, faculty, and staff.”Standard Two: Resources- “The program has sufficient resources to support the quality and effectiveness ofthe educational process.”Standard Three: Curriculum and Academic Practices- “The program’s curriculum and academic practicesprepare students for professional practice.”Standard Four: Health and Safety- “The program’s policies and procedures promote the health, safety, andoptimal use of radiation for students, patients, and the general public.”Standard Five: Assessment- “The program develops and implements a system of planning and evaluation ofstudent learning and program effectiveness outcomes in support of its mission.”Standard Six: Institutional/ Programmatic Data- “The program complies with JRCERT policies, procedures, andSTANDARDS to achieve and maintain specialized accreditation.”A full copy of JRCERT Standards and Objectives can be located at: dards/AMERICAN REGISTRY OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGISTS MISSION, RULES AND REGULATIONS, ANDSTANDARDS OF ETHICSARRT MissionPromoting high standards of patient care by recognizing qualified individuals in medical imaging,interventional procedures, and radiation therapy.In support of this mission, the ARRT: Adopts and upholds standards for educational preparation for entry into the profession; Adopts and upholds standards of professional behavior consistent with the level of responsibilityrequired by professional practice; and Develops and administers examinations which assess the knowledge and skills underlying theintelligent performance of the tasks typically required by professional practice in the discipline. The libraries at Metropolitan Community College provide materials for educational and recreational purposes.Students may request materials from any of the five campus libraries.The Metropolitan Community College libraries belong to the Missouri Bibliographic Information User System(MOBIUS), a consortium of over 60 academic Missouri libraries. In addition to the items owned by theMetropolitan Community College libraries, library users have access to over 29 million items owned by otherlibraries in the MOBIUS system. You may place online requests for materials using the MOBIUS catalog. Seethe Library site at www.mcckc.edu/library/maple-woods for more information.In addition to the college’s library resources the Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic TechnologyProgram maintains resources to support and enhance the student’s educational experience. The resourcesare located between the classroom and the labs. A resource index is maintained. All resources are theproperty of the program; however, may be checked out and taken home by the student. When the resource isreturned, it should be returned to its original location and faculty should be notified so that the return may berecorded. All resources must be returned upon graduation, withdrawal, or dismissal.14

STUDENT CONDUCTCODE OF STUDENT CONDUCTMaple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology students are expected to follow the MetropolitanCommunity College Code of Student Conduct 7.35010 DP. Academic Dishonesty in the Code of Student Conduct.PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITYMaple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology students are expected to comply with the HealthInsurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and must hold information regarding patientsand their care in confidence. Any violation of this federal law may result in disciplinary action which mayinclude dismissal from the program.Students will acquire facility and patient informed consent prior to participating in videos, slides, photographsor other projects while at the clinical site. Additionally, students will remove any identifying information whenpresenting case studies or sharing patient imaging studies in class.Students are expected to respect fellow student privacy and confidentiality and will utilize appropriate drapingtechniques when performing procedures in the lab that require exposure of a body part.TOBACCO FREE CAMPUS POLICYMetropolitan Community College is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students,employees, contractors, and visitors. PROGRAM POLICIES AND PROCEDURESAPPLICATION TO THE PROGRAMSee Student Information and Application Packet.TRANSFER STUDENTSThe Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic Technology Program does not offer transfer credit ofprofessional Radiologic Technology Courses from any institution. General education courses may be acceptedfor transfer in compliance with Metropolitan Community College’s policy.NON-DISCRIMINATION (TITLE IX)Metropolitan Community College, in keeping with the requirements of Title IX of the Education AmendmentsAct of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ancestry, national origin, or disability. They are:1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the collegereceives a request for access.2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believesare inaccurate, misleading or in violation of the student’s right to privacy.3. The right to a hearing regarding the request for an amendment of the student’s education records.4. The right to prevent the College’s disclosure of the student’s personally identifiable information from thestudent’s education records in most circumstances.5. The right to opt out of the disclosure of directory information.6. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by MCC tocomply with the requirements of FERPA.The Radiologic Technology Program Faculty will respect student privacy and confidentiality and will complyFERPA. Student records will be secured, confidential counseling session will occur in private, and assessmentswill be returned only to the individual student.16

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKA criminal background check is required prior to program start date. An adverse finding on the criminalbackground check may eliminate a participant.Criminal proceedings that occur while attending the Maple Woods St. Joseph Site Radiologic TechnologyProgram may result in the student being unable to complete the clinical experience and dismissal from theprogram.
