TheSecretLanguageofBooksA Guide toStory Elements2021expandededition 2021

WelcomeWhen it comes to talking about books, there are endless ways to describe them, but we’re often quick to let one concepttake the lead — if there are robots oraliens, it must be science fiction. Ifthere’s a haunted house, then it’s horror. But there’s so much more to books thanjust one simple descriptor. And that is the challenge: making abook discoverable when you don’tknow exactly WHY any one readermight be interested in it or what readingexperience they’re seeking. The readermay be looking for a particular genre, like psychological suspense, or theymight be seeking a particular feeling, likeinspiring or gritty (we call this appeal). Some readers want a specific theme orplot of a book (like fish out of water oropposites attract). That’s why NoveList created a vocabularythat tries to tell the complete story (punintended). We developed this languagein response to reading trends, as well asthe needs of readers and librarians. Noneof these headings individually is the endall-be-all to finding the right book but, using them together, readers can exploreand narrow down their search to findbooks that fit the reading experiencethey want. We’ve spent a lot of time making sureour headings are sound and can speakto librarians and readers alike. As authorscontinue to expand and experiment, wewill continue to review and expand ourheadings — and we always welcomefeedback. Please feel free to share yourthoughts and questions with us atnovelist@ebsco.com. Happy reading! Cathleen Keyser Metadata Strategy Manager
