Choices for Living (Choices) is a resource guide to help older adultsand their families explore a variety of housing options available in Marin County.Individuals’ housing needs vary greatly, and needs may change over time. We urgeanyone considering a housing change to be as clear as possible about the lifestyleand location they seek, their current health and level of independence, and thefinancial means by which they will support their housing needs. Marin County DemographicsMarin County lies north of the City and County of San Francisco, California and is just across theGolden Gate Bridge. U.S. Highway 101 extends in a north-south direction through the county’s urbancorridor. The county covers 529 square miles and much of the land outside the 101 urban corridor isopen space. The County’s older adult population is increasing at a rate that surpasses the nationalrate. Residents age 60 and above total 70, 0631 which represents 27% of the total population. A typical conversion would add an outside entrance, a mini-kitchenand a lockable door between the new unit and the main living area to ensure privacy. The cost ofconversion can be recouped from the rent or exchange of housing for services provided. Marin Housing owns and manageslow cost rental units and provides direct rentalsubsidies and low interest home improvementloans to qualifying households. Wait times varyfor services. Open Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. Programs include the following:Housing Choice VoucherA federally financed program that providesdirect rental assistance in the private marketfor low-income families, seniors and thedisabled. Once applicants receive a voucher,they pay 30% of their total household incomefor rent, and the subsidy covers the rest.Prospective tenants select their ownapartment, enter into an agreement with thelandlord, and secure the approval of the unitfrom Marin Housing. After getting on thewaiting list, applicants should expect to wait upto 5 years. Residential Care FacilitiesResidential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), also known as “assisted living” or “boardand care” homes, range in size from small six bed homes to large multi hundred bed communities. RCFEs are licensed by Community Care Licensing to provide room, meals, housekeeping, personal care and medication management. Monthly fees range from 4000 to 8000and some require an entrance fee. Medi-Cal does not pay for residential care.
