TIMKENOVERVIEWSHELF LIFE AND STORAGE OFGREASE-LUBRICATED BEARINGS AND COMPONENTSTimken guidelines for the shelf life of grease-lubricated rollingbearings, components and assemblies are set forth below.Shelf life information is based on test data and experience.Shelf life should be distinguished from lubricated bearing/component design life as follows:STORAGETimken suggests the following storage guidelines for itsfinished products (bearings, components and assemblies, hereinafter referred to as “Products”): Unless directed otherwise by Timken, Products should bekept in their original packaging until they are ready to beplaced into service. Do not remove or alter any labels or stencil markings on thepackaging. Products should be stored in such a way that the packagingis not pierced, crushed or otherwise damaged. After a Product is removed from its packaging, it should beplaced into service as soon as possible. When removing a Product that is not individually packagedfrom a bulk pack container, the container should beresealed immediately after the Product is removed. Do not use Product that has exceeded its shelf life asdefined in Timken’s shelf life guidelines statement. The storage area temperature should be maintainedbetween 0 C (32 F) and 40 C (104 F); temperaturefluctuations should be minimized. The relative humidity should be maintained below 60percent and the surfaces should be dry. The storage area should be kept free from airbornecontaminants such as, but not limited to, dust, dirt, harmfulvapors, etc. The storage area should be isolated from undue vibration.SHELF LIFE POLICYShelf life of the grease-lubricated bearing/componentrepresents the period of time prior to use or installation. Theshelf life is a portion of the anticipated aggregate design life. Itis impossible to accurately predict design life due to variationsin lubricant bleed rates, oil migration, operating conditions, installation conditions, temperature, humidity and extendedstorage.Shelf life values, available from Timken, represent a maximumlimit – and assume adherence to the Timken suggested storageand handling guidelines. Deviations from Timken’s storage andhandling guidelines may reduce shelf life. Any specification oroperating practice that defines a shorter shelf life should beused. Timken cannot anticipate the performance of the greaselubricant after the bearing or component is installed or placedin service.TIMKEN IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHELF LIFEOF ANY BEARING/COMPONENT LUBRICATED BYANOTHER PARTY.EUROPEAN REACH COMPLIANCETimken-branded lubricants, greases and similar products soldin stand-alone containers or delivery systems are subject tothe European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorizationand Restriction of CHemicals) directive. For import into theEuropean Union, Timken can sell and provide only thoselubricants and greases that are registered with ECHA(European CHemical Agency). For further information, pleasecontact your Timken engineer.6TIMKEN SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING CATALOGExtreme conditions of any kind should be avoided.Inasmuch as Timken is not familiar with a customer’sparticular storage conditions, these guidelines are stronglysuggested. However, the customer may very well be requiredby circumstance or applicable government requirements toadhere to stricter storage requirements.

TIMKENOVERVIEWMost bearingtypes are typicallyshipped protectedwith a corrosionpreventive compoundthat is not a lubricant.Such bearings may beused in oil-lubricatedapplications without removalof the corrosion-preventivecompound. When using somespecialized grease lubrications, itis advisable to remove the corrosionpreventive compound before packing thebearings with suitable grease. Some bearing types in this catalog are pre-packed withgeneral purpose grease suitable for their normal application.Frequent replenishment of the grease may be necessary foroptimum performance. Care must be exercised in lubricantselection, however, since different lubricants are oftenincompatible. When specified by the customer, other bearings may beordered pre-lubricated.Upon receipt of a bearing shipment, ensure that the bearingsare not removed from their packaging until they are readyfor mounting so that they do not become corroded orcontaminated. Bearings should be stored in an appropriateatmosphere in order that they remain protected for theintended period.Any questions concerning shelf life or storage should bedirected to your local sales office.WARNINGFailure to observe the following warnings couldcreate a risk of death or serious injury.Never spin a bearing with compressed air. The componentsmay be forcefully expelled.Proper maintenance and handling practices are critical.Always follow installation instructions and maintainproper lubrication.Any warnings for this product line will be posted onwww.timken.com/warnings.TIMKEN SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING CATALOG7

ENGINEERINGBEARING TYPES AND CAGESRADIAL SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING TYPES AND CAGESThe principle styles of radial spherical roller bearings that Timkenoffers are: 600 mm outer diameter: EJ, EM and EMB 600 mm outer diameter: YMB, YMD and YPOPTIONAL FEATURES AVAILABLE WITHTIMKEN SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARINGSAbove suffixes correspond to different types of designs dependingon a bearing size and geometry. Main differences are the cagetype used in the assembly. Spherical roller bearings with an EJcage suffix are fitted with a stamped-steel cage. YM/EM/YMB andYMD suffixes are used with brass cage designs. YP is a pin-typecage specific for large diameter bearings.A lubrication groove and three oil holes are provided in thebearing outer ring as standard. This is designated by the W33suffix. It eliminates the expense of machining a channel in thehousing bore for introducing lubricant to the bearing. This designfeature allows the lubricant to flow between the roller paths, through a single lubrication fitting. The lubricant moves laterallyoutward from the center of the bearing, reaching all contactsurfaces and flushing the bearing. To order, add the suffix W33to the bearing number (e.g. 22216EMW33). The newly redesigned Timken EJ, EM and EMB bearings offerhigher load ratings, increased thermal speed ratings and reducedoperating temperatures compared to the previous offering. In addition to these improvements, cage designs vary betweenthe different styles as noted below. See the cage section formore details.StyleCage DesignEJLand-riding steel cage; one per rowEM/YMRoller-riding one-piece brass cageEMB/YMBLand-riding one-piece brass cageYMDLand-riding two-piece brass cageYPSteel pin-type cageMost Timken spherical roller bearings are available with acylindrical bore as well as a tapered bore. Tapered bore bearingpart numbers are designated with a K suffix.A taper of 1:12 is standard except for 240, 241 and 242 series, which have a taper of 1:30.W33 lubrication groove and oil holesBearings for vibratory applicationsTimken offers specific spherical roller bearing designs forvibratory applications. They are designated by the W800modification code and made to a C4 clearance. Specify W800when ordering. This design provides:A lubrication groove on the outer ring with three lubricationholes to facilitate bearing lubrication.Extra-close running accuracy (P5) with high and low pointsmarked on the bearing.Reduced bore and outside diameter tolerances.Radial internal clearance is made in upper two-thirds ofC4 clearance range. These bearings are available with either a cylindrical or taperedbore. Other optional features are available. See page 61, table 27or consult with your Timken engineer.CAGESEJYMDEM/YM and EMB/YMBYPFig. 3. Radial spherical roller bearings.12TIMKEN SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING CATALOGCages (also referred to as rolling element retainers) serve severalpurposes in the proper operation of a rolling element bearing.Cages separate the rolling elements and prevent rolling elementon rolling element contact and wear. Cages align the rollingelements on the inner ring to prevent rolling element sliding, skidding, and skewing to facilitate true rolling motion. For handlingpurposes, cages retain the rolling elements on the inner ringassembly to allow for bearing installation. In some instances, cages also improve flow of the lubricant to the bearing racewayor rib contacting surfaces. The following sections discuss the common types of cagesused for each major bearing design type (tapered, cylindrical, spherical, and ball bearing). The basic design geometry, material, and manufacture are discussed for each cage type.

ENGINEERINGBEARING TYPES AND CAGESSTAMPED-STEEL CAGESThe redesigned Timken EJ bearings incorporate a uniquestamped-steel cage design. The EJ design includes two independent cages, one for eachrow of rollers, which are assembled into an individual bearing. This feature serves to prevent cage bending when the operatingenvironment is favorable for this to occur. This cage is guided on the inner ring and runs above pitch. Eachcage is surface hardened (nitrided) to provide improved wearresistance as well as additional strength to allow the bearing tooperate in even the most severe environment. Face slots have beendesigned for improved lubrication flow. This can result in a loweroperating temperature and longer bearing life.Fig. 7. One-piece, machinedbrass, roller-riding,finger-type cage.Fig. 8. One-piece, machinedbrass, land-riding,finger-type cage.Fig. 9. Split, machined-brass,land-riding, finger-type cage.Fig. 4. EJ bearings.Fig. 5. EJ cage.MACHINED-BRASS CAGEPIN-TYPE CAGESEM, EMB, YM, YMB and YMD bearing cages are precision- machinedfrom brass as shown in figs. 7-9. Their rugged construction providesan advantage in more severe applications. The open-end, fingertype design permits lubricant to reach all surfaces easily, ensuringample lubrication and a cooler running bearing.Large diameter spherical roller bearings can be supplied withthese cages. Pin-type cages, one for each row of rollers, consistof two rings and a series of pins running through the center ofthe rolling element. The design of pin-type cages permits anincreased roller complement, giving the bearing enhanced loadcarrying ability. Consult your Timken engineer for suggestions onthe application of this cage.EM, EMB, YM and YMB are all one-piece designs that aredifferentiated by their means of guidance within the bearing. WithEM and YM designs, the cage mass is low and the rollers are usedfor guidance, while EMB and YMB cage designs typically havemore mass and guide on the inner ring.YMD cages are similar to YMB, except they have a two-piecedesign. Two independent cages, one for each row of rollers, areassembled into an individual bearing. This allows each row ofrollers to rotate independently when required by the application, and prevents bending of the cage fingers.YM/EMYMB/EMBFig. 10. Pin-type cage.YMDFig. 6. ENGINEERINGMETRIC SYSTEM TOLERANCESThe term deviation is defined as the difference between a singlering dimension and the nominal dimension. For metric tolerances, the nominal dimension is at a 0 mm (0 in.) tolerance. The deviationis the tolerance range for the listed parameter. Variation is definedas the difference between the largest and smallest measurementsof a given parameter for an individual ring.Standard Timken radial spherical roller bearings maintainnormal tolerances according to ISO 492. Tables 2 and 3 list thecritical tolerances for these bearing types. For applicationswhere running tolerance is critical, P6 or P5 tolerances arerecommended.TABLE 2.
