Tajweed EssentialsThe definition of Tajweed: To recite every lettercorrectly, from its place and with all its qualities.The purpose of Tajweed: To recite the Qur’an in themanner it was revealed and recited to Rasulullah ﷺ ,for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala.Makhaarij َم َـخا ِر ْٰج Definition: Makhraj is the place where the sound of aletter originates.According to Imam Khalil رح , there are a total of 17Makhaarij (places where the sound originates).Page 6

ح Pronounced HARSHLY from the center ofthe throat. خ Pronounced HARSHLY with a full mouthfrom that part of the throat, nearest to themouth. And raising the back part of the tonguetowards the palate. د Pronounced SOFTLY with the tip of thetongue, touching the roots of Thanaaya Ulya. ذ Pronounced SOFTLY with the tip of thetongue, touching the EDGE of Thanaaya Ulya. ر With the tip of the tongue, touching thegums of Thanaaya Ulya and Rabaa'ie Ulya. Note:This letter will be pronounced with a full mouthand at times, lightly with an empty mouth.Page 9

ز With the tip of the tongue, touching theEDGES of Thanaaya Sufla and a little ofThanaaya Ulya. Thus giving the sound of Z. س Same as the letter ز but with a sound ofa whistle. ش Same as the letter ج but with the soundof "SH" as in Sheep. ص Same as the letter س but with a fullmouth. ض This is a full mouth letter. Withupturning the edge of one side or both sides ofthe tongue, and touching the inner gums ofDawaahik and Tawaahin. Also, raising the backpart of the tongue towards the soft palate.TIP: When you pronounce it, make sure to keepthe front tip of the tongue away from the rootsof Thanaaya and Rabaa'ie Ulya and have ittouch the palate.Page 10

ط Same as ت ظ Same as ذ but with a full mouth. ع Same place asbut with a full mouth. ح but pronounce it with astress, by going down deeper into the throatand give a squeeze to your throat. غ Pronounced SOFTLY with a full mouthfrom that part of the throat, nearest to themouth. And raising the back part of the tonguetowards the palate. ف With the edge of Thanaaya Ulya,touching the inner portion of the bottom lip. ق Raising the extreme back part of thetongue, touching the palate and uvula. ق but away from the Uvula. ك Similar to ل With the tip of the tongue, touching thegums of the teeth, which extends from theDawaahik of one side to the other.Page 11

م Pronounced from the dry portion of thelip. ن With the tip of the tongue, touching thegums of the teeth, which extends from theAnyaab of one side to the other. و Pronounced by the incomplete meetingof both portions of the lip. ه Pronounced SOFTLY from that part of thethroat nearest to the chest. ء Same place as ه but without giving awaythe sound of breath. ي With the center of the tongue, touchingthe palate.Page 12

Full Mouth LettersThe following seven letters will always be read with afull mouth: خصضغ طقظ An easy way to remember it, is to combine the letters:ٰ ص َض ٰغ َـط ٰقِـ ْظ َ ُٰخٰـ Page 13

The rules of GhunnahWhenever a Meem م has a Tashdeed ًٰ , makeGhunnah by making a humming sound with the mouthclosed for about 2 seconds.Whenever a Noon ن has a Tashdeed ًٰ , make Ghunnahfor about 2 seconds, by making a nasal sound with thefront part of the tongue, spreading against the hardpalate.Page 14

Examples: بِ ِهٰ َنٰ ُكـل ُ ُٰه َ ٰ ن لظ َنٰ ٰاِ َن ا َ ٰ َٰغمٰ Page 15 ِٰم َمٰ ٰاِ َٰن ٰعَ َمٰ ِٰم ٰنَا كٰ ٰعَ ِٰم َ فَ ٰل َ َٰما َٰم َنٰ ٰاَ ٰنِٰـ ْٰي

The rules of Noon Saakin(ٰ )ن ْ and Tanween (ٰ ً )There are four Rules for NoonSaakin and Tanween:1. Idh-haar ٰ اِ ْظهَ ْار 2. Ikhfaa اِ ْخ َف ْٰاء 3. Idghaam ً اِ ْدغَا ْٰم 4. Qalb ٰ ب ْ ْ قَل Page 16

Idh-haar ٰ اِ ْظهَ ْار :If after a noon Saakin or tanween, one of the lettersof Idh-haar appear,( خ ، غ ، ح ، ع ، ه ، ) ء , then Idh-haar will be made by reciting it without any nasalsound or ghunnah.ٰ ٰاَن ْ ٰـعَ ْم َت ِٰم ْن َٰخ ْشي َ ِٰة ٰ ِٰمنْ ُٰه ْم ِٰم ْن َٰغيْـ ِٰر ٰ ـمة َٰخيْـر َٰ َو َر ْح َس ِفي ْ ٰـنَة َٰغ ْـصبا ٰ عَ ْٰرش ٰعَ ِظيْم ٰ قَ ْٰوم َهاد ٰ َو ِٰم ْن ٰا َ ْه ِل ٰ َوتَـٰنْ ِٰح ُت ْو َن ٰاِذا ٰا َبَدا عَلِ ٰي ْـما َٰح ِكيْمٰا Page 17

Ikhfaa اِ ْخ َف ْٰاء :If after a noon saakin or tanween, the followingletters appear, then Ikhfaa will be made. ك ، ق ، ف ، ظ ، ط ، ض ، ص ، ش ، س ، ز ، ذ ، د ، ج ، ث ، ت Ikhfaa means to make a nasal sound for about 2seconds, with the front part of the tongue hoveringclose to the hard palate.ٰ ِٰم ْن َٰجنٰت ٰ بَ ٰعْض ُٰز ْخ ُرف ص ْرنَا ٰ ُ ْ ٰفَان ٰ ِٰظّل َ ٰظ ٰلِـيّْل عَ َد َٰاوة ٰك َا َ ٰن َ ُٰه ٰ َٰم ْن ٰثَ ُقل َ ْت ٰ َ َ نَارٰا ٰذ ات ٰ َغ ُف ْٰورٰ َٰش ُك ْور َٰسـٰمٰـٰوٰت ِٰطبَاقَا ٰ ٰثَـ َٰمنا ٰقَلِيّْل ٰ َو ٰا َن ْ ُٰـت ْم ٰدَكٰا ٰدَكَا لَيَال َٰس ِويا َٰ ٰ قَ ْٰوما َضاٰ لِـي ْـ ن ُٰمـٰ ْح ِٰسن ٰفَل َ ُٰه Page 18

Idghaam ام ْٰ َ اِ ْدغ :If after Noon Saakin or Tanween, the letters ن ، م ، و ، ي appear, then Idghaam with ghunnah willbe made. Idghaam means to join the harkat letter (aletter with zabar, zer or pesh) with the idghaamletter and pronounce it with a nasal sound for about2 seconds. Also, if after Noon Sakin or Tanween,from the Idghaam letters, a و or ي appears, thenblend the nasal sound into the sound ofٰ ُمنَا ِٰديا يْـنَا ِد ْيٰ ٰل ِـٰقَ ْٰوم ٰيَعْل َ ُم ْٰو َن َج ٰنَةٰ َٰو َحرِيْرا ٰ ِٰم ْن َوٰلِـي ٰ ِٰم ْن َماٰء ٰ اِلٰـٰه َٰوا ِحد َخ ٰي ْـٰر ِٰمنْ ُٰه ٰ ـح ُف ْوظ ْ ل َ ْٰوح َٰم ٰ َر ُس ْٰوْل ٰن َبِـيا ي َ ْو َم ٰئِذ ن َا ِع َمة ْٰ َو َوالِـد َٰو َما َول َ ْٰد كَثِـيْـٰر َٰاويَهْ ِد ي و or ي .ٰ َو َٰم ْن يَـعْ َم ْل ِر َجال ي ُٰـ ِحبُـ ْو َٰن ٰ يَـ ْو َم ٰئِذٰ َٰوا ِجفَة ٰ اَيَامٰا َٰمعْ ُد ْودٰت ٰ فَ ٰل َ ْن ٰن َ ِزي ْ َد ُك ْم ٰ َط ٰل ْـعٰ ٰن َ ِضيْع Page 19

If after a noon saakin or tanween, the letters ر ، ل appear, then Idghaam without ghunnah will be made. تَـٰ َوابٰا َٰر ِحـيْـما ٰ َغـٰ ُفـ ْور َر ِحـيْـم ٰ ٰاَ ْن ٰل َ ْم ٰي َـ َٰرہ ٰ َجـنٰـت ل َ ُـه ْم ٰ ٰا َ ْن َٰراٰ ُه ْٰ َمـتَاعا ٰلـَ ُك م Page 20

Qalb ب ٰ ْ ْ قَل :If after Noon Sakin, a letter ب appears, then theNoon Saakin will change into a Meem Sakin ( ) ًْم andit will be read with ghunnah. The ghunnah will bedone by making a humming sound with the mouthclosed. The ghunnah will be done for about 2seconds.E.g.ٰ ِٰم ْن ۢ ٰبَعْ ِد If after tanween, a letter ب appears, then take awaya harkat from the tanween. Then join it with thetiny Meem Saakin and make ghunnah.E.g. ـما َ ِ ٰن َـ ْفٰسٰ ۢ ب ٰ ن بَـ ِخ َل ْٰۢ َٰم ِ َ لـ َن َ ْس َٰفع ٰا ۢ ٰبِالـن ٰ اصي َ ِة ْٰ َ ي َ ْو َم ٰئِذ ۢ بِـ َجهَـن م ـما ٰ ِ نَـ ْف َ ِ ٰس ۢ ب ِ ٰاَ ٰن ْ ِٰۢبياٰء ٰ اّلل َ َ قَ ْٰو ْٰل ۢ ٰبَ ٰلِيْـغا ُف ُ ٰرش ۢ ٰبَ َطاٰ ِٰئـ ُنهَا ِِٰ ـم ان َٰ عَـلِ ٰي ْم ۢ بِال ْ ُـمتَـقِيْـ َْ ن ُم ْـط َم ٰئن ۢ بِا ْ ْٰلِي ن ٰب َ ْقلِهَا ْٰۢ ِٰم ا َبَـد ٰا ۢبِـ َما ٰ اٰيَات ۢ بَـيِـنَات ٰ اٰيٰتٰ ۢ ٰب َـيِـنٰت Page 21

The Rules of Meem SaakinThere are three rules forMeem Saakin:1. Idghaam Meem Saakin ً اِ ْدغَا ْٰم 2. Ikhfaa Meem Saakin اِ ْخفَاء 3. Idh-haar Meem Saakinٰ اِ ْظهَ ْار Page 22

Idghaam Meem Saakin ًٰ اِدْغَا ْم :If after Meem Saakinmeemً ْٰم ,there appears another م , then ghunnah will be made by making ahumming sound with the mouth closed. Theghunnah will be done for about 2 seconds.ٰ َوا َْر ُجلَـ ُٰك ْم ِمٰ ْن لـ َ ُٰك ْم َٰما ٰ اِن َ ُٰـه ْم َٰمعَ ُك ْم ٰ ل َ ُٰـه ْم ُٰم ْوس ي َ ٰا ْتِـيَـنَ ُٰك ْم ِٰمـٰ ِنـ ْيٰ اِلَي ْ ُٰك ْم ُٰم ْر َسل ُ ْو َٰن Ikhfaa Meem Saakin ٰاِ ْخ َف ْٰاء : م If after Meem Saakin , there appears a Baa ب ,then ikhfaa will be made by making a hummingsound with the mouth closed. The Ikhfaa will bedone for 2 seconds. فَا َ َخ ْٰذنٰ ُٰـه ْم بِـ َما ٰ ـمعْ ُر ْو ِف َ ْ يَا ْ ُم ُر ُٰه ْم ٰبِال ٰ ُر ُسل ُ ُٰه ْم ٰبِالْبَـيِـنٰ ِت اسبَـقَ ُٰك ْم ٰبِهَا َ َم ٰ َربَ ُٰه ْم ٰبِ ِه ْم ٰ اٰ َمنْ ُٰـت ْم ٰبِه Page 23

Idh-haar Meem Saakin ار ْٰ َ اِ ْظه :If any other letter besides Baa ب or meem م appears م after a Meem Saakin , then do not make ghunnah.ٰ ل َ ُٰـه ْم ٰثِيَاب ٰ اَن ْ ُف ُس ُٰه ْم خٰلِ ُد ْو َن اَن ْ ُٰـت ْم ٰل َـهَا ُب ُط ْونِـ ِٰه ْم َٰوال ْ ُـجـل ُ ْو ُدٰ َمنْ َسكا ُٰه ْم ٰن َا ِس ُك ْو ُٰه لـ َ ُٰك ْم ٰفِيْهَا Page 24

Qalqalah قَل ْ َقل َ ْٰه Part 1Qalqalah means to make a bouncing sound by either: Tapping the tongue against the hard palate.Or tapping the upper part of the lip with thebottom part of the lip.Or tapping the uvula with the extreme back partof the tongue.If any of the following letters د ، ج ، ب ، ط ، ق have asaakin, Qalqalah will be made.ٰ ق ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the uvula withthe extreme back part of the tongue.ٰ بَٰـ ْٰق ِر ٰ اُٰ ٰقْ ِس ُم ٰ نَٰـ ْٰقص ٰ ط ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the tongueagainst the hard palate.ٰ فَ َو َسٰ ْطٰ َن ٰ َٰم ْ ٰطل َ ِع ٰا َ ْ ٰطعَ َمنَا Page 25

ٰ ب ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the upper partof the lip with the bottom part of the lip. َٰسبْـقا ٰ َٰح ٰب ْـل ٰا َ ٰبْ َوابا ٰ ج ْ Make a bouncing sound by tapping the tongueagainst the hard palate. َٰر ْٰجعِ ٰه ٰ تَٰـ ْٰج ِر ْي ٰفَ ْٰج ٰر ْٰ Make a bouncing sound by tapping the tongue د against the hard palate.ٰ ل َ ْم ي َ ٰلِ ْد ٰ ٰاَ ْٰدب َ َر ٰ لـ َ ٰقَ ْد Page 26

Note: While making qalqalah, be sure to not create aharkat soundread as) ُ ِ َ (. For example ٰ ٰفَ ْٰجر should not be ٰفَ َٰج ٰر .*Part 2 of Qalqalah is in the Chapterof Waqf (Stopping).Page 27

The rules of RaaPart 1- Raa ر prounounced with a full mouth:1. If a Raa ر has a zabar or pesh, then it will beread with a full mouth.ٰ تَ ِٰز ُر ٰ ُٰر ُبـ ُع 2. If a Raa Saakinٰ ـم َر َٰ َ ث ٰ اَ َٰم َر ٰ ْر has a zabar or pesh before it,then it will be read with a full mouth.ٰ ُم ْٰرتَاب ٰ فَٰ ُص ْر ٰ ٰاَثَ ْٰر َن ٰ ا َْٰر َس َل Note: If there’s an empty mouth letter before the RaaSaakin, then upon joining the two letters, blend thesound from empty mouth to full mouth.3. If a Raa Mu-shaddadٰ ر has a zabar or pesh,then it will be read with a full mouth.ٰ تَقْ َشعِٰـٰ ُر ٰ يَـ ِفٰ ُر ٰ َٰح َٰر َم ٰ بِٰ َر Page 28

Note: If there’s an empty mouth letter before the RaaMu-shaddad, then upon joining the two letters, blendthe sound from empty mouth to full mouth.ٰ ْر 4. If before a Raa Saakin , there is a temporaryzer (a zer which was not there from before),then it will be read with a full mouth. اِ ْٰر َح ْـم ُه َما . اِ ْٰر ِجعِـ ْي 5. If before a Raa Saakinٰ ْر , there is a zer in theprevious word, then it will be read with a fullmouth. ار َح ْـم ُه َما ْٰ َٰر ِب ارتَا ُب ْوا ْٰ ٰاَ ِم 6. The Raa Saakin ار ِج ُعـ ْو ِٰن ْٰ َٰر ِب ٰ ْر in the following four words,will always be read with a full mouth:ٰ ٰفِ ْٰرقَة ٰ ٰقِ ْٰر َطاس ٰاِ ْٰر َصادا ِٰم ْٰر َصادا Page 29

Part 2- Raa ر prounounced with an empty mouth:7. If a Raa ر has a zer , then it will be read with anempty mouth.ٰ ٰن ُـ ُٰذ ِر 8. If a Raa Saakin ِٰر ْٰزقا ٰ َٰوا ٰقْـٰتَـٰ ِٰر ْب ٰ ْر has a zer before it, then it willbe read with an empty mouth.ٰ ِش ْٰرب ٰ اَنْـ ِذ ْٰر ُه ْم 9. If a Raa Mu-shaddadٰ َو َشا ِو ْٰر ُه ْم ٰ ر has a zer, then it will beread with an empty mouth.ٰ ِم ْن َٰش ِر ٰ َول ِ ٰل ِٰر َج ِال ٰ بِالْبِٰـ ِر Note: If there’s a full mouth letter before the RaaMu-shaddad, then upon joining the two letters,blend the sound from full mouth to empty mouth.Page 30

ٰ ْر 10. If before a Raa Saakin , there is an original zer(a zer which was there from before), then it willbe read with an empty mouth.ٰ فَان ْٰـتَٰـ ِص ْر ٰ صبِٰـ ْر ْٰ ِ ا 11. If before a Raa Saakinٰ فِ ْٰرعَ ْو َن ٰ ْر , there is a zer in thesame word, then it will be read with an emptymouth.ٰ ٰبِ ِش ْٰر ِك ُك ْم ٰ فَ َذ ِكٰ ْر ٰ َوي َ ْصٰبِـٰ ْر *Part 3 of of the rules of Raa is in theChapter of Waqf (Stopping).Page 31

The rules of Laam ) (ل in theword اهلل If a zabar or pesh appears before the wordthe word اهلل , then اهلل will be read with a full mouth.Examples for a zabar before the word ِضـ ٰ اهلل ُ َر ٰٰ َي ٰ ٰن َـٰ َر َ اهلل Examples for a pesh before the wordِ صرا ٰ هلل ُ ٰ ْ ٰ ٰن َـ ٰ َواتَـٰ ُٰقوا ا َ هلل اهلل :ٰ اهلل ُ َخ ٰـت َ َم اهلل :ِ ر ٰسـٰ ٰو ُل ا ٰ هلل ْ َُPage 32

If a zer appears before the word اهلل , then the word اهلل will be read with an empty mouth.ِ َم ْر َضا ِت ا ٰ هلل ٰ اهلل ُ ُٰق ِل ِ بِ ٰس ِم ا ٰ هلل ْPage 33

Part A: The Symbols ofWaqfWhen the following symbols appear, one should stopcompletely: قف ط ع م When the following symbols appear, one will have theoption to stop or continue without stopping: ز صلے ص When the following symbols appear, one will pause fora moment without breaking the breath: وقفه سكته ق This means its preferable not to stop. ج This means its preferable to stop. س This means, one should not stop at that place. ال Instead, he can stop at a word before or after it.Page 35

Part B: How to make waqfat the end of a word1. If the last letter of a word has any harakahbesides do zabar )with an alif )ً ( , kara zabar )( or a zabarَ ( ﺎ , it will be removed andreplaced with a saakin.ٰ َح َٰس َد ٰ َح َٰس ْد ٰ ـخ ُ ٰر ُج ْ َ ـخ ُ ٰر ْجٰ ي ْ َ ي ٰ َخ ْٰوف ٰ بَـلَـ ِد ٰ بَـلَـ ْد ٰ ا ََٰحد ٰ ا ََٰح ْد ٰ َخ ْٰو ْف 2. If the last letter already has a sakin, Kara zabar,or a zabar with an alif, then there will be nochanges while making waqf. دَسٰهَا ا َْع َمال َ ُٰـه ْمٰ دَسٰهَا لـ َ َٰش ٰتـى لـ َ َٰش ٰتـى ٰ ا َْع َمال َ ُٰـه ْم Page 36

3. If the last letter has a do zabar and an alif, thenremove one zabar and use the alif to stretch thelast letter. If there is NO alif, then add one.Example with an alif: اَبَدا Example without an alif: ا َٰبَ َدا ٰ َج َزآءَا َج َزآء 4. If the last letter is a taa marbootah (a roundtaa), then regardless of what harakah it has, itwill be changed into a small haa with a sakin ontop.ٰ ُق َٰوة ٰ ُق َٰو ْه 5. If the last letter has a tashdeed, then hold on tothe last letter for about 1 ½ seconds.ٰ َمـ َٰفـر َمـ َفٰـ ُر ٰPage 37

Part C: Rules of Qalqalahrelated to waqfIf any of the letters ofٰ ُق ُط ُب َجد receives a saakin dueto waqf, then qalqalah will be made.ٰ َخـل َٰـ َق ٰ َخٰـل َٰـ ْق Also, if the qalqalah letter has a tashdeed, then whilemaking waqf upon it, hold on to the qalqalah letter for amoment.ٰ َٰحـٰق َحٰـق ٰPage 38

Part D: Rules of Raa Saakinrelated to waqf1. If before a Raa mawqoofahٰ ( ْر a raa thatreceived a saakin due to Waqf), there’s anothersaakin letter. And before that, there’s either azabar or pesh. The raa saakin will be read with afull mouth.ٰ ِم ْن ن ُ ْور ٰ َم َع ْاْل َ ٰبْ َرا ِر ِم ْن ن ُ ْو ْٰر ٰعَ ْش ٰر ٰعَ ْش ْٰر ار ْٰ َم َع ْاْل َ ٰبْ َر In this example, before the raa saakin, there’s an alifwith a zabar. It will be read with a full mouth.Page 39

2. If before a Raa mawqoofahٰ ( ْر a raa thatreceived a saakin due to Waqf), there’s anothersaakin letter.And before that, there is a zer. The raa saakinwill be read with an empty mouth.ٰ َو َْل ٰبِ ْكر ؕ َو َْل ٰبِ ْك ْٰر 3. If there’s a yaa saakin ٰي ْـ before a raamawqoofah (a raa that received a saakin due towaqf), then regardless of whether there is azabar or pesh before the Yaa saakin, the Raasaakin will be read with an empty mouth.ٰ لـٰ َ َٰخبِـيْـر ـخبِـيْـ ْٰر َٰ َ ل ٰ َوالٰ َطيْـ َر ؕ ٰ َوالٰ َطيْـ ْر ٰPage 40

The Rules of MaddThe meaning of Madd is to stretch the sound of a letter.There are three letters of madd: ًَٰا 1. An Alif ( ) with a zabar before it.2. A waw Saakin (ٰ ) ًُٰ ْو with a pesh before it. ِيْـ 3. A Yaa Saakin ( ) with a zer before it.There are two types of Madd: ٰ َم ُد ْاْل َ ْصلِـ ْي Maddul Far’ee- ي ْٰ َم ُد الـْ َف ْر ِعـ Maddul Asli-Page 41

Maddul Asli- َم ُد ْاْل َ ْصلِـ ْٰي After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْٰو ، ( ِ ٰي ْـ , there should be:)ُٰ ا ،ِ ٰا ،َ ٰا ، (ء NO Humza NO other saakin letter after a , NO Tashdeed- And NO madd symbolsٰ يْـ ْو or ًَٰا ًٰ) ٓ ( on top.Maddul Asli will be stretched for one alif only.NOTE: One Alif means the amount of time it takes to liftone finger.It is NOT permissible to stretch it more or less than onealif. Otherwise one will be adding or subtracting a letterfrom the the Qur’an.ٰ َوقِـيْـ َل ٰ ٰن ُـٰ ْٰوح ٰ ٰذَا َت Page 42

Maddul Far’ee- َم ُدالـ ْ َف ْر ِعـ ْٰي After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there’s either:)ُٰ ا ،ِ ٰا ،َ ٰا ، (ء A Humza Another saakin letter after a , A Tashdeed- And at times, a madd symbolٰ يْـ ْو or ًَٰا ًٰ) ٓ ( on top.Maddul Far’ee is broken down into 5 types:ِ َ َم ُد الْـمت ٰ ـص ْل ُRelatedtoHumza.1. Maddul Muttasil-RelatedtoWaqf.3. Maddul Aaridh Waqfi-2. Maddul Munfasil-ِ َم ُد الْـمنْـ َف ٰ ـص ْل ُٰ َم ُٰد الْـعَا ِر ْض َوقْـ ِفـ ْي 4. Maddul Leen Aaridh Waqfi- ي ٰ م ُد الِـيْـ ْن عَا ِر ْض وقْ ِف 5. Maddul Laazim-ً َم ُد َاْل ِٰز ْٰم ْ ََPage 43

ِ َ َم ُدالْـمت Maddul Muttasil- ل ٰ ْ ـص ُAfter the letters of MaddHumza) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears a) (ء in the SAME word. It’s preferable to stretchit for 4 alifs.ٰ يُٰـ ِضٰـ ْٰٓي ُء ٰ لـٰ َتَ ُـنـٰ ْٰٓو ُء َٰ َٰج آء ِ َم ُدالْـمنْـ َف Maddul Munfasil- ل ٰ ْ ـص ُAfter the letters of MaddHumza) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears a)َ ٰا ،ِ ٰا ، ( ُٰا in the FOLLOWING word. It’s preferableto stretch it LESS than Maddul Muttasil which will be 2½ alifs.ٰ ي ٰاِلَـيْـ ِه ْٰٓ َويَـهْ ِٰد ٰ ُت ْو ُبـٰ ْٰٓوا ٰاِلَـيْـ ِه ٰ َك َٰمآ اُٰ ِم ْر ُت Page 44

Maddul Aaridh Waqfi- َم ُدالْعَا ِر ْض َو ْقـ ِفـ ْٰي After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears atemporary Saakin due to waqf (stopping). It will bestretched 3 or 5 alifs. ان ِٰ فِـي الـْ ِمـيْـ َٰز ان ْٰ فِـي الـْ ِمـيْـ َٰز َو َمـ ْش ُـهـٰ ْودٰ َو َمـ ْش ُٰـهـ ْو ْٰد ِ ـد ُٰ ْ ـما يُـ ِٰري َ ل ِ ـما يُـ ِٰريْـ ْٰد َ ل Letters of LeenThere are two letters of Leen:1. A waw Sakin ( َيْـ ) َ ْو with a ZABAR before it.2. A Yaa Sakin ( ) with a ZABAR before it. َخ ٰـي ْـ ٰر ، عَ ٰـي ْـن ، قَـ ْٰول ، زَ ْٰوجا Page 45

Maddul Leen Aaridh Waqfi َم ُداٰللِـيْـ ْن عَا ِر ْض َوقْـ ْفـ ْٰي After the letters of Leen) َْو ، ( َيْـ , there appears atemporary Saakin due to waqf (stopping).It will be stretched 1 ½ or 2 alifs. ِمـ ْن َخـٰ ْوفٰ ف ٰ ْ ِمـٰ ْن َخـٰ ْو ـف ٰ ِ ْ الـصـي ٰ َ َو ـف ٰ ْ ْ الـصـي َ َو Page 46

Maddul Laazim- ًٰ َم ُد َاْل ِٰز ْم There are 5 types of Maddul Laazim:ٰ ِكـلْـ ِٰمـ ْٰي ُمـث َ َـق ْـل ِ ِKilmi Mukhaffaf- َـف ٰ ْ ـخـف َ كـلْـمـ ْي ُم Harfi Muthaqqal- ـل ٰ ْ َحـ ْرفِـ ْي ُمـث َ َـق 1. Kilmi Muthaqqal2.3.ِٰ ـخـف َْـف َ َحـ ْرفـ ْي ُم Leen Laazim- ً م ْٰ لِـيْـ ْن َْل ِٰز 4. Harfi Mukhaffaf5.Terms to remember:Hurooful Muqatta’aat ات ٰ ْ َ ُح ُر ْو ُف الْـمقَ َطع : A word that is inُthe beginning of many surahs. Only Allah Ta’ala knowsthe meaning of these words.KIlmi: A word which is NOT from the HuroofulMuqatta’aat (Letters of Muqatta’aat).Harfi: A word which is from the Hurooful Muqatta’aat(Letters of Muqatta’aat).Muthaqqal: A word that has a tashdeed.Mukhaffaf: A word that has a permanent Saakin.Page 47

Kilmi Muthaqqal- ِكـلْـ ِمـ ْي ُمـث َ َـقـل After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears aTashdeed in the same word. It will be stretched 3 or 5alifs.ٰ ـحآ ُجـ ْٰٓونِٰـ ْي َٰ اَ ُت ، ت ٰ ِ ٰ صف ٰ ٓ َوالـ ، اَلـْ َٰحآقَـ ُة In this example, it has two kilmi muthaqqals, ٰٰ َا andٰ ُ ْو .Kilmi Mukhaffaf- ـف ٰ ْ ِكـلْـ ِٰمـ ْي ُم َـخ َـف After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears apermanent saakin in the same word. It will be stretched3 or 5 alifs.There is only one example in the Qur’an:ٰ ٰﺁا ٓ ٰلـ ْئ َن Page 48

Harfi Muthaqqal- ـل ٰ ْ َحـ ْرفِـ ْي ُمـث َ َـق After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears aTashdeed in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It will bestretched 3 or 5 alifs.) م ( اَل ِ ْـف َْل ْٰٓم ِٰمـي ْٓ ْم ٰٓ ٓ ا ٰلـ In this example, the Laam ٓ ٰلـ willbe Harfi Muthaqqal because of a tashdeed after it.) طٰ ٰٓس ٓم ( َطا ِسـي ْٓ ْم ِمـي ْٓ ْم In this example, the Seen ٓسـ will be Harfi Muthaqqal because of a tashdeed after it.Page 49

Harfi Mukhaffaf- ـف ٰ ْ َحـ ْرفِـ ْي ُم َـخ َـف After the letters of Madd) َا ، ُ ْو ، ( ِيْـ , there appears apermanent saakin in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It willbe stretched 3 or 5 alifs.) اف ٰ ْ َٓ ٰٓق ( ٰق ) م ْٰ ْٓ م ( ا َل ِ ْـف َْل ْٰٓم ِمـي ٰٓ ٓ ٰالـ In this example, the meem ٰٓم will be Harfi Mukhaffaf because of a permanent Saakinat the end of meem.Page 50

Leen Laazim- لِـيْـ ْن َْل ِز ْٰم After the letters of Leen) َْو ، ( َيْـ , there appears apermanent Saakin in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It willbe preferable to stretch it for 3 alifs.) اف َها يَا ٰعَـيْٓـ ْن َٓص ْاد ٰ ْ َٓ ص ( ك ٰٓ ٰكٓـٰهٰـيٰـٰ ٰع ٓـ In this example,the AinAin عٓـ will be Leen laazim. Because inside the letter عٓـ , there is a َيْـ ( a yaa saakin with a zabar beforeit). And right after that, there’s a permanent saakin, atthe end of Ain عٓـ .Page 51

The rule of the word اَنَا Wherever the wordafter the noon اَنَا appears in the Qur’an, the alif ا ن , will NOT be used to stretch the ن noon . Instead, it will be read asٰ ا ََن . ا But in the following words, the alif after the noon ن , ن will be used to stretch the noon :ِ آءنَا َ َ اٰب ، َجآءَنَا ، ا َنَاسـٰ َٰي Page 52

The rules regarding the tiny س on top of ص There are 4 words in Qur’an, where there is a tiny س ontop of ص .In the following two words, the س will be read:ٰ ص ْط ٰ ُ ( َويَـبْـ In Surah Baqarah, Ayah # 245)ٰ ص َطة ٰ ْ ( بَـ In Surah A’raaf, Ayah # 69)In the following third word, one can choose to readeither س or ص : صيْـ ِط ُر ْو َٰن ٰ َ ـم ُٰ ْ ( ٰاَ ْٰمً ُه ُم ال In Surah Toor, Ayah # 37)In the following fourth word, the س will NOT be read:ٰ صـيْـ ِطر ٰ َ ٰ ( بِـٰ ُمـ In Surah Ghaashiyah, Ayah # 22)Page 53

Miscellaneous rules1. In the following words, the Alif will be used tostretch the letter ONLY AT THE TIME WAQF: ـّل ٰ َ ْ َلـسـبِـي َ ا ، اَلـ َر ُسـ ْو َ ْٰل ، ( اَلـٰ ُظ ُنـ ْونَا In Surah Ahzaab) ( لٰـ ِكـنَا Surah Kahaf)But, if one does not make waqf at those places, thenthe Alif will NOT be used to stretch the letter.2. In the following word, one has a choice,whether to use the Alif for stretching thesecond laam:ٰ َس َّل ِس َّل or ل ٰ ْ ( َس َّل ِس In Surah Dahr)3. The word قَـ َوا ِري ْ َرا in Surah Dahr, is repeatedtwice. In the first one, the alif after raa willONLY be used when making waqf.In the second قَـ َوا ِري ْ َرا , the Alif will not be used at all,regardless whether one is making waqf or not.Page 54

4. In the following words, the Alif after Laam willNOT be used to stretch the Laam: ـح َشـ ُر ْو َٰن ِٰ ( َْل اِ َ ٰل ا In Surah Aale Imraan,Ayahْ هلل ُت #158) ( َٰو َْل ا َْو َض ُعـ ْوا In Surah Taubah, Ayah #47) ـحـنَ ُه َ َ ( ا َْو َ ْٰل اَ ْذب In Surah Surah Namal, Ayah #21) م ِٰ ْ ـجـ ِحـي َ ْ ( َ ْٰل اِ َ ٰل ال In Surah Saaffaat, Ayah #68)ٰ ( َ ْٰل اَن ْ ُـت ْم In Surah Hashar, Ayah #13)5. In Surah Hood, the Raa in the word ـجرٰ َها ْٰ َم willbe read with Imaalah. In other words, it will beread as “Ray”.6. In Surah Haa Meem Sajdah, the second Hamzain the wordٰ ـج ِمي َ ٰءَ ٰاَ ْع will be read with ء Page 55

Tas’heel. In other words, blend the sound ofboth the humzas with a soft tone.7. While making ghunnah on the NoonMushaddadٰ ن in the word َْل تَا ْ َمـنَا , make thelips round for a moment and then leave it.8. In the following words, blend the sound ofinto ط ت , from full mouth to empty mouth,without any qalqalah on the ط :ٰ ( َمافَ َٰر ْط ٰتُـ ْم In Surah Yusuf)ٰ ـسـ ْط َت َ َ ( لـ َئِ ْن ب In Surah Ma’idah)ٰ ( َمافَ َٰر ْط ُت In Surah Zumar)ٰ ال ا ََٰح ْط ُت َ َ ( فَق In Surah Namal)Page 56
