Melchizedek appears nowhere else in scripture, but is nonethelesssignificant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, “You area priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek,” a description latergiven (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest.Early Christians saw in Melchizedek’s bread and wine the breadand wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (intoday’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture. In the Gospel, Luke describes Jesus providing bread for a crowd in wordssimilar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takesbread, gives thanks, breaks it. Together, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Presence, and thecall to serve those in need are all found in the gift of theEucharist.Copyright J. S. Prior to the celebrationof Baptism, attendance at the Pre-JordanProgram is mandatory for both parents. Godparents must bebaptized Catholics at least 16 years of age who have completed the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Theymay not be the parent of the child being baptized. If married, they must be married in the Catholic Church, regularlyattending Mass on Sunday, and living their Faith. If the godparents are not from St. Matthew Parish, they must present acertificate of eligibility from their own parish. Requirementswill be explained at the Pre-Jordan Class. Pre-Jordan Classes are held at Saint Matthew Parish on the following Monday evenings in 2022 at 6:30 PM in the Rectory: August 1,October 3, December 5.
