The Clover PatchThroughout the next few months 4-H familieswill be reading more about Skynet, a website thatconnects you to one of the world's largest networkof telescopes. Participants in the Skynet JuniorsScholars program will be guided by leadersthrough a series of astronomy related activities. The following is an article written by GingerZastrow, a certified Oneida County 4-H volunteerand Skynet leader, who writes about the MarchSkynet session.Last month the Astronomygroup started their first workshopwith an icebreaker allowing eachperson a chance to tell why, how orwhat got them interested inAstronomy. From there the youthGinger Zastrow,4-H Volunteer &built their own "Pocket SolarSkynet InstructorSystem" using a piece of registertape. The objective was to give theyouth a better understanding of the relativedistances between the orbits of the planets.Participating youth were encouraged to thinkabout the solar system and any investigablequestions they may have had. Questions, such as"Where there any surprises?” and “Look howempty the outer solar system is. Do you knowanything about the physical properties of theplanets that are spread out versus the ones that arecrowded in close to the Sun?” were asked. Theyouth were then challenged and encouraged tomake observations.Following this exercise, youth received a briefpeak at the global network of robotic telescopesaround the world serving professional astronomersand students over the internet. Finally the youthwere able to use their curiosity and begin anexploration by finding an object in the night sky.Through Skynet, they chose a telescope, a filter,an exposure time and an opportunity to name theirApril 2015Page 6Skynet Astronomy11:30 am-12:30 pm Saturday, April 18Come and learn how to use Skynet from 11:30a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the UWExtension Oneida County Office, located in thelower level of the Rhinelander/Oneida CountyAirport. The Clover PatchApril 2015Page 8Family Fishing Day was started by Oneida County 4-H more than a decade ago and is now one ofOneida County 4-H’s largest and most attended annual events. The goal of this event is to introduce, educate, and promote the joy of fishing to area youth and families. The event features multiplelearning stations, led by 4-H volunteers and volunteers from the community, where people of all ageslearn about fishing and the aquatic environment. Past stations have included lessons on fishing withlive and artificial baits, casting, staying safe on the water, identifying aquatic invasive species, knottying and more. Last year, the attendance was around 125 youth and we anticipate that number toincrease this year. SEE THE FOLLOWING PAGE FOR A LIST OF STATIONS (PAGE 9).Without volunteers, this event cannot happen! We need youth in grades 6 and older and adults tohelp run the stations! Why is this important? It’s for a good cause—helping youth get outdoors, while educating them about the value of our natural resources—AND it’s a great way to promoteOneida County 4-H and all the positive youth development programming that goes along with it!Contact Anne Williams at 715-365-2750 orby email at anne.williams@ces.uwex.edu.
