Past Event Recap3M Innovation Center Event, April 2012The tour of the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul wasanother big hit for IIE Twin Cities. We had 27 peoplewere in attendance! Those in attendance weretaken through the story of 3M and its history ofinnovation and collaboration. The collaborationbetween technology and product groups and withexternal customers has resulted in new productsthat would otherwise likely not have ever comeabout.Early product milestones included: The world's first waterproof sandpaper(early 1920’s) Masking tape (1925) 3M’s diversion into defense materials whichresulted in reflective sheeting for highwaymarkings, magnetic sound recording tape, filament adhesive tape (1940’s) Post-it Notes (1980)Much of 3M’s corporate culture is credited toWilliam L. McKnight, who served as 3M chairman ofthe board from 1949 to 1966. He encouraged 3Mmanagement to "delegate responsibility andencourage men and women to exercise theirinitiative." 3M’s heritage dates back more than 100years, and McKnight's principles continue to guide3M.The group ended in a room filled with hands-onexhibits resembling that of the Science Museum. Each exhibit represented a category of 3Mtechnology and told the story of the productinterrelation and how they each tied back to theadhesives through product samples and interactivedisplays. Some of 3M’s diverse products. For example, films: one product line enhances thebrightness in LCD displays while another blocks the sunfrom coming through windows. 3M films are used tocreate building-sized graphics and to prevent graffiti. Someare single-layered with humble applications and otherscombine hundreds of layers that are tuned to transmit orreflect specific wavelengths. Still other films provide veryhigh barriers to oxygen and moisture-a requirement innext-generation electronic displays.Following the tour, several attendees gathered at the 5-8Club for Juicy Lucy’s and toasted the first round on thedime of IIE Twin Cities. While discussing the varioustechnologies, everyone had a different favorite but couldall agree that the one hour visit was not nearly enough toproperly experience the various technologies. Thanks to all who attended!6
