INTRODUCTIONChi Sao (Sticky Hands) is a Wing Chun kung fu training exerciseused to develop touch sensitivity (as well as having many other benefits). Enhancing this ability will enable you to read your opponent’sintentions and respond to his movements much faster than you couldby eye alone. The aim of this publication is to enable readers to teach themselvesChi Sao in a way that is applicable to real fighting scenarios, and todo so to a standard where they can then continue to progress on theirown. It doesn’t attempt to delve into the inner workings of WingChun or any other fighting methods. It is recommended to use this publication in conjunction with or as asupplement to titles in the Self-Defense Series by Sam esThe contents are given in a specific order, starting with basic positioning, progressing through numerous drills, and then moving on tofree-flowing Chi Sao. Follow this order for maximum benefit.

HAND POSITIONSThere are three main hand positions used in Chi Sao. They are TanSao (Palm up Block/Taun Sao), Bong Sau (Wing Arm Block/Bon Sao)and Fook Sao (Bridge-On Arm Block/Fok Sao/Fuk Sao).Practice each of these hand positions separately as well as switchingfrom one to the other.Tan SaoTan Sao is used to limit the opponent’s ability to strike straight in.Drive it forward from the center of your body in a slight upwardmotion.Ensure that:Your palm is open, fairly flat and facing the sky. There is approximately a 30-degree bend in your elbow.Your whole arm is very slightly angled towards yourcenterline.

2S A M F U RYBong SauBong Sau is used to redirect the opponent’s attack to a neutral position. It’s best used when you’re already in contact with the opponent’sarm.Ensure that:Your elbow is pointed straight out and angled slightlytowards your body.Your forearm is angled at a 45-degree downward slope intowards the centerline.Your forearm is also angled 45 degrees forward.Your wrist is on your centerline.Your elbow is higher than your wrist.Your hand/fingers point in the same direction as yourforearm.Your upper arm is in a fairly straight line, pointing to thefront. The angle of your elbow is slightly greater than 90 degrees.

How to do Chi Sao Preview3Fook SaoIn this defensive position, your arm is placed over your opponent’sarm. The exact positioning is adjusted to fit the situation and is oftendescribed as either high or low.Ensure that:Your elbow is about 6-8 inches from your body and angles intowards the center of it.Your forearm is angled up, with the hand open and thefingers hooked down towards your wrist.

BASIC ATTACKP2 grabs P1's arms. His right hand grabs the inside of P1's left and hisleft hand grabs the outside of his right. P2 then shifts his body to hisleft while directing P1's arms forward and to the right. While still gripping with his right arm, P2 uses his left hand to applypressure just above the elbow (towards the shoulder). If it’s below theelbow, P1 will be able to elbow P2.P2 moves into P1 as he continues to push on P1's arm. He strikes P1'smidsection with his right hand as he moves in.Defense Against the Basic AttackAs P1 attempts the double arm grab, P2 relaxes his upper body. Hemust keep grounded through his legs to avoid being pulled offbalance.

How to do Chi Sao Preview5As P1 moves in to press P2's arm, P2 turns toward him and deflects hisarms. P2's left arm angles down sharply to suppress both of P1'shands. At the same time, P2's right hand strikes P1's midsection.

LAP SAODeflecting Arm Drill/Lop Sao/Larp SaoP2's right arm is in Bong Sau and P1's left arm is in a vertical palmheel, with his forearm resting on P2's right forearm. Both of theirother hands guard their own centerlines.P2 presses his left hand onto P1's left forearm and retracts his righthand, then attacks with a palm heel. P1 defends against the strikewith Bong Sau.From here, they swap “roles.” That is, P1 presses P2's right forearmwith his right hand and strikes with his left. They repeat this process.

How to do Chi Sao Preview7Lap Sao AttackP1 strikes at P2 with his left hand. P2 defends with his right arm, usingBong Sao. Both guard their own centerlines with their other hands.P2 angles his right arm up to deflect P1's left arm out of the centerline. At the same time, he steps in and uses his left hand to press P1's righthand against his left bicep.P2 strikes with his right hand.

KICKP1 is in the Left Out, Right In position. At the right time, he grabsboth of P2’s wrists with the opposite hand (that is, he grabs his leftwrist with his right hand and his right wrist with his left hand). He brings them to a low position and kicks him in the thigh. He could kick him in the stomach, but there is a greater chance ofhim being pushed off balance that way.

How to do Chi Sao Preview9Kick TwoP1 is in the Left Out, Right In position. As his right hand reaches a high point, he brings his left hand acrosshis body and under P2's left arm. He then grabs P2's left wrist andkicks his leg.If P2 is too close to kick, then P1 can grab his arm with both handsand knee him from a variety of angles.Locking his elbows to his torso will help him control distance andbalance.
