One of a KindThat morning at work, I sat staring at the blank page in my typewriter. I’d been keeping myself busy with my secretarial job, tennislessons, ski trips and the singles-group meetings at church. I had myclose friends and family. But I was lonely.I just want to feel loved, I said to God. Is that so much to ask?Lunchtime came around, and I was still struggling with my “poorme” thoughts. Shopping will do the trick, I thought, heading for myfavorite card shop across the street. For some reason the knickknacksand balloons made me feel worse. A display of brightly colored mugsstood before me. I picked one up to get a closer look.On the side was a red heart and the words I Love You written overand over in fancy cursive—the very words I needed to hear. I’ll havemy afternoon tea in it.Feeling lighter, I went to the cashier to make my purchase. Theclerk checked the mug but couldn’t find a price sticker. “I need aprice check,” he called out to the store manager.“Where did you find this?” the manager asked me.“Over there with the others.”The manager walked to the shelf full of mugs and looked foranother that said I Love You. “That seems to be the only one,” hesaid. “And I don’t recall ever selling that style. Take it. No charge.”I held the mug tight to my chest. God had blessed me with a signof His love. And He gave it freely.4

A free excerpt from your FREE BOOKWhen God Makes LemonadeWhen a winter storm hit, Edna hadno means to clean up the devastation.Until the Angels withchainsaws arrived!Eighty-eight-year old Edna stood alone looking into the darkness.Outside, the wind of a winter storm was ravaging her North Carolina farmhouse without mercy. With the power already out and thenight just beginning, she listened to the storm unleash its fury andbegan to pray softly. “O, God, protect me from this storm.”When the lonely hours of night finally faded into morning, Ednarose from her chair and stepped to the window. The destructionwas devastating. Large, splintered branches lay stacked upon oneanother, frozen in the grip of ice. Drifts of snow climbed the sideof the house. Power lines had blown to the ground and were tangled in the mess of debris.“Where will I ever find the money to clean up this mess?” shewhispered to herself. She was already struggling making ends meeton her Social Security check. She had no one to call for help. Thirty-six hours passed. The power was still off and Edna was runningout of firewood. The yard remained a disaster. Lying down by the8

fire, she suddenly heard several engines roar around the corner andinto her driveway. Car doors opened and slammed shut. She was surprised to see ten men unloading tools in her front yard. One of the men stepped up onto the porch and knocked. Cautiously, she opened the door.“Ma’am,” the gentleman said, smiling, “my name is Joel. We livenearly a hundred miles away in South Carolina. We heard about theterrible ice storm you had up here, so several men from our churchgot together and decided to come up and help out. We brought ourtools to clean up your yard.”Edna was stunned. “But I have no money to pay you,” shestammered.“Ma’am,” Joel kindly interrupted her, “we don’t expect nor will wetake any money for our labor. Our pastor received a call that youand several others in this area were in desperate need of assistance, and we’ve come as Christian brothers so we can help.”Edna watched from her window as the angels with chainsaws cutdown the large, damaged trees and sawed the limbs into manageablelengths. Despite the bitter cold, they worked all day to clear the yard, replenish her stack of firewood, and rake the empty flower beds. When the job was done and their tools were loaded up, Joel againknocked on the door. “Ma’am, may we come in for a moment?”“Of course, come in,” Edna insisted. Gently, all ten men filed intoher small living room. Joel handed her a New Testament completewith their signatures on the inside front cover.“This is a gift from us. If it is ok, we would like to pray for you.”9

Circling together, they held hands and prayed for God to protectEdna, comfort her, and bless her with a long, healthy life. When they left, Edna looked at her yard and marveled—it lookedbetter than before the storm.“Thank you, God. I was bitter at this storm, yet you blessed me.Thank you for those men and their obedience. Bless them, Lord, andhelp me do likewise.”Read all the details of Edna’s wonderful story on page 80 ofyour FREE copy of When God Makes Lemonade.Grow your faith with the uplifting stories in yourFREE BOOK, When God Makes Lemonade.Order your copy ofWhen God Winks at You today!10
