Planes, trains and fewer cars?Out with the old, make room for: the new Mineta San JoseInternational AirportI recently attended a presentation by Rick Dressler, the communityliaison to surrounding cities, businesses, and related publicorganization for Mineta SJ Airport. Yes, the new airport isscheduled to open in 2010, with a brand new Terminal B replacingthe old Terminal C and with a brand new design. This is notwelcome news for those of us with a San Jose history interest.Alas, Silicon Valley must make room for this new, modern facility tobe able to manage the 10.7 Million passengers and 183 MillionPounds of Cargo (statistics from 2007 per website). Two positiveswill be, of the several new amenities, the shared use of the newticket counters and gates by all airlines. This technique is in use atSFO Airport and will provide increased efficiency in the use of thelimited space during departures and arrivals. And, there will be again of estimated 70,000 new jobs. Remember to take CapitolCorridor Intercity Rail Service with stops in San Jose and SantaClara, and Oakland and visit Sacramento this year. An adult ticket(one way) is approx. 32 which may be pre-purchased or bought onthe train. If you live in surrounding cities, take the light rail, bus, or BART andtransfer to these train stations. This is green for the environment and healthy for people. Is Technology replacing Personalized Service? At breakfast time I like to pick up the newspaper in my driveways and then readthe local and international news and the editorials over a cup of coffee.Occasionally I clip one or the other article to share with friends, relatives, orcolleagues. At many a concierge desk, one or more complimentary newspapers are there forthe guests. That will soon change: Your guests will file into the Wi-Fi equippedbreakfast room, armed with their laptops or Blackberry PDAs, start the day byreading their e-mails, read the news on-line, and maybe even make someinvestment decisions. ‘While doing so, they will likely have their earphones pluggedinto their iPhone or MP3 to avoid that the servers, or other hotel guests won’tinvade their privacy. The enjoyment of having a tasty breakfast and a good cup ofcoffee or tea will be incidental – time is money, after all.If there is still a newspaper available, it will be pitifully thin. Technology is about tode-personalize many things. The service Concierges provide may become itsvictim, safe at high-end hotels that want to retain their four-star status. While I admit that I am an old-timer and attached to the pleasant, personalizedaspects of business or leisure travel, I don’t think I am alone in appreciating theattention of a concierge, maitre-d or server. I encourage everybody in thehospitality industry to sharpen and maintain his or her interpersonal skills. Many ofyour guests may have become accustomed to doing without that friendly greeting, that helpful hint, that expert advice about local resources, and – above all – thatfriendly demeanor and smile we pride ourselves in. Let’s remind them thattechnology has not and will not supplant the personal touch that is part of our skillsinventory, and that good service it is not an old-timer’s paradigm!Airship Ventures – MOTHER’S DAY FLIGHTSWant to surprise Mom for Mother’s Day?
