modern Hebrew IIntroductionReading can be defined as “the act of decodinggraphic material in order to determine its message.”To put it another way, reading consists of comingback to speech through its graphic symbols. Inshort, meanings reside in the sounds of the spokenlanguage. Speaking a language is the necessaryfirst step to acquiring the ability to read a languagewith meaning.Since Hebrew is written in the Hebrew alphabet,to read Hebrew you need to associate the soundswith a different system of symbols than the Latinalphabet. A complete listing of the Hebrew alphabetcan be found starting on page 4. This is for your information only: you will not need the list to learn to readHebrew since all of the instruction is on the audio. In Hebrew you read from right to left, the oppositeof English. The first few pages in this booklet arein English and should be read from left to right;however, the pages teaching Hebrew, starting withpage 4, should be read from right to left.Vowels are normally not included in theHebrew script. They can be marked by specialsigns under or above the letters, but they are usually

modern Hebrew IIntroduction (continued)included only for beginning readers, in poetry, andin the Old Testament. As of the second grade in elementary school,Israelis are able to read without vowels, by guessingthe correct pronunciation from the context. In thisbooklet, the vowels are included so you won’t haveto worry about guessing. These lessons are printed inthe Hebrew “square type.” You will note that there areno capital letters in Hebrew. In Modern Hebrew, the major vowel sounds are:ah, eh, ee, o, and oo. Some vowels are representedby more than one sign. The reason for this is that inancient times there were more vowel sounds thanthere are today and the various forms of transcriptionhave been maintained even when there is no sounddifference. And there is also a punctuation vowel, called schva, which is sometimes silent. There are twenty-two consonants in the Hebrewalphabet, written with thirty-one letters. As inthe case of vowels, there are some letters which inModern Hebrew sound alike, but which originallywere different sounds. This is especially true in thecase of some guttural sounds which are no longerpronounced gutturally in Modern Hebrew.2

modern Hebrew IIntroduction (continued)There are two letters which are silent and serveas vowel carriers. There are two letters which havea different sound when a dot is added. There arefive letters which have two forms: one form whenwritten at the beginning or middle of the word, andanother form when written at the end of the word.Having different letters for the same sound may causedifficulties in spelling but not in reading. The aim of this program is to teach you how theletters of the Hebrew script sound. That is to say, you’ll learn to read aloud mostly words that you don’tunderstand. In the early lessons, you’ll be “decoding”letter combinations that have no actual meaning. FromLesson Five on, you’ll be reading real words. The recorded portion of the reading materialsfor Modern Hebrew I, Second Edition will be foundat the end of the program. You can do the readingsas it is most convenient for you. They can be doneindividually with each unit or at a more appropriatetime afterwards. Instructions on how to proceedwith the readings are contained in the audio portionof the course.3
