RECRUITMENTInternship opportunitiesINTERNSHIPSCurrently, the term “internship” is used to describe various experiences. To establish uniformity in the use andapplication of the term “internship,” the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) recommendsthe following definition:An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in theclassroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships givestudents the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fieldsthey are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.CRITERIA FOR EXPERIENCE DEFINED AS AN INTERNSHIPTo ensure that an experience—whether it is a traditional internship or one conducted remotely or virtuallyis educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship by the NACE definition, all the followingcriteria must be met: The experience must be an extension of theclassroom; a learning experience that requiresapplication of the knowledge that is gained in theclassroom. It cannot simply advance the operationsof the employer, or be comprised of duties that aregular employee would routinely perform. The skills or knowledge learned must betransferable to other employment settings. There is supervision by a professional with expertiseand educational and/or professional background inthe field of the experience. There must be routine feedback by the experiencedsupervisor. There are resources, equipment, and facilitiesprovided by the host employer that support learningobjectives and goals. The experience has a defined beginning and end,and a job description with desired qualifications. There are clearly defined learning objectives andgoals related to the professional goals of thestudent’s academic coursework.14UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA

RECRUITMENTInternship opportunitiesHIRING AN INTERNIf you would like to hire a UNO student for aninternship, we ask that you follow the guidelines listedon page 14. Promote your internship by posting yourinternship on UNO Career Connect, attending careerfairs, participating in events, and/or schedulingan information table.INTERNSHIPS FOR CREDITUNO does not require internships as a graduationrequirement. Some academic departments may requireor encourage students to receive academic credit foran internship. The decision is up to the student and thefaculty member. If the student receives academic credit, they pay tuition and fees and complete academic workin addition to the work done for the employer.COMPENSATIONMost organizations compensate interns with an hourlywage, stipend, tuition grant, or scholarship. Someemployers offer unpaid internships. Students typicallyseek paid internship opportunities, especially if theyare in a high-demand discipline or funding theirown education. If your organization offers unpaidinternships, we recommend reviewing the USDepartment of Labor’s Standards Act onInternship Programs. Please visit acdc.unomaha.edu to see a list ofinternship coordinators at UNO.FUNDING FOR INTERNSUNO does not have a service to subsidize studentintern wages. However, grant-funded entities maybe a potential resource for employers. EPSCORassists organizations enhancing science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and biomedical research.Likewise, the InternNE program provides matchingfunds for eligible businesses to create new internships.EMPLOYER GUIDE BOOKWORK SCHEDULEWork schedules are varied and tend to be flexible.Typically, students work 10-20 hours/week whileenrolled in courses.REPORT YOUR INTERNSHIP HIREIf you hire a UNO student as an intern, we encourageyou to report your hire to the ACDC office. This helps usas we work with students looking for internships. It isalso useful information for recruitment efforts.15
