1Eldest Daughter ofExalted PaRentsHadrat Zainabwas the eldest daughter of ourbeloved Master, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa and his firstwife, Hadrat Khadijahra. She was the daughter of the mostexalted parents in the entire history of the world. Before theadvent of the Holy Prophetsa people in Arabia used to burytheir daughters alive. Even if the girls were allowed to live, they were not given any love or affection. They were not givenany rights as human beings and were treated like animals.Allah sent the Holy Prophetsa as a mercy for the whole world. The Holy Prophetsa came and established great honour andrespect for women. He taught people that daughters should bera

HADRAT ZAINABcherished. In fact, he said that anyone who raises two or moredaughters with love and kindness would be as close to him inparadise as his two fingers are close to each other.Hadrat Zainabra was born several years before theprophethood of the Holy Prophetsa. The age of the HolyProphetsa was thirty years at the time of her birth. Her familytree from her exalted father’s side was like this; HadratZainabra was the daughter of Muhammadsa, who was the sonof ‘Abdullah, who was the son of ‘Abdul-Muttalib, who wasthe son of Hashim, who was the son of Manaf, who was theson of Qusaiyy. Her family tree from the side of her honouredmother, Hadrat Khadijahra was like this; Hadrat Zainabra wasthe daughter of Hadrat Khadijahra, who was the daughterof Khuwailid, who was the son of Asad, who was the son of‘Abdul-‘Uzza, who was the son of Qusaiyy.1Her mother Hadrat Khadijahra educated HadratZainabra with a lot of care. Hadrat Khadijahra was a highlyintelligent, well-mannered, and refined lady. She was a verybeloved and caring wife of the Holy Prophetsa. HadratKhadijahra stood shoulder to shoulder with the Holy Prophetsain all his sorrows and difficulties. As the beloved first-born8

HADRAT ZAINABchild Hadrat Zainabra received a lot of love and inherited awealth of noble traits from her parents.9

2MARRIAGEThe wedding of Hadrat Zainabtook place beforethe prophethood of her father, the Holy Prophetsa. Accordingto the custom of the Arabs, she was married at an early ageto her cousin Hadrat Abul-‘Asra bin Rabi‘. Hadrat Abul‘Asra was the son of Hallah. Hallah was the sister of HadratKhadijahra and daughter of Khuwailid. At the occasion of her eldest daughter’s weddingHadrat Khadijahra gave her a beautiful gift, a garnet necklacemade in Yemen. This was the finest piece of jewelry HadratKhadijahra owned and she wanted to give it to her daughter asa part of her dowry.11ra

3ACCEpTANCEof ISLAMWhenthe Holy Prophetsa made the claim ofprophethood, Hadrat Zainabra immediately acceptedIslam. At that time her husband was on a business trip awayfrom Makkah. During his travel Hadrat Abul-‘Asra heardreports about the claim of the Holy Prophetsa. This newswas confirmed upon his return to Makkah when HadratZainabra told him that she had accepted Islam.Hadrat Abul-‘Asra was bewildered by this informationand asked, “O Zainab, did you not even think about whatwould happen if I did not accept the claim of the HolyProphetsa?”13

HADRAT ZAINABHadrat Zainabra replied, “How can I reject my fatherwho is Sadiq (Truthful) and Amin (Trustworthy)? I swearby God, he is telling the truth. My mother and sisters, Hadrat‘Alira son of Abu Talib, Abu Bakrra, Hadrat ‘Uthmanra bin‘Affan from your tribe, and your cousin Hadrat Zubairra binAl-‘Awwam have all accepted Islam. I do not think that you willreject my father’s claim of prophethood.”Hadrat Abul-‘Asra said, “I have no doubt about yourfather nor do I reject him. Indeed, nothing is more importantto me than to be with you in your religion, but I am afraid thatmy people will accuse me of abandoning the religion of myancestors for my wife’s sake.” Therefore he did not acceptIslam2. However, he was an honourable and affectionateperson. The Holy Prophetsa often expressed appreciation forthe excellent relationship between him and Hadrat Zainabra .14

4PERSECUTIon BYTHE MAKKANSAs Islam achieved greater success in Makkah thehostility to it also kept rising. The disbelievers did not let anyopportunity pass in which they could inflict hardship on theHoly Prophetsa. Sometimes they gave the Holy Prophetsaphysical hardship and on other occasions, they caused himemotional suffering. Two of the daughters of the Holy Prophetsa, HadratRuqayyahra and Hadrat Ummi Kulthumra, were engaged tomarry two of Abu Lahab’s sons. After the Holy Prophet saclaimed to be a prophet of God, both of them broke theirties with the daughters of the Holy Prophetsa, according17

HADRAT ZAINABto the wishes of Abu Lahab.3 Some of the leaders of theQuraish tried to force Hadrat Abul-‘Asra to divorce HadratZainabra as well. As an encouragement they offered to marryHadrat Abul-‘Asra to a girl from another honourable tribe ofthe Quraish. Their goal was to cause emotional pain to theHoly Prophetsa. However, Hadrat Abul-‘Asra loved Hadrat Zainabravery much and he completely rejected this evil offer of theMakkans. Although he had still not changed his religion at thetime of the migration of the Holy Prophetsa to Madinah, theHoly Prophetsa liked him and praised him highly.4In the thirteenth year of his advent, the Holy Prophetsamigrated from Makkah to the city of Madinah. During thisperiod Hadrat Zainabra was living with her in-laws. Soon afterthe migration, the first battle of Islam was fought between theMuslims and disbelievers of Makkah. This battle was calledthe Battle of Badr. Hadrat Abul-‘Asra fought on the side of theMakkans against the Muslims.518

5A PRECIous RANSomHadrat Zainabwas still living in Makkah at this time.At the Battle of Badr the Muslims defeated the Makkans andsome of the disbelievers were held as captives. Hadrat Abul‘Asra was among those taken captive. When the news of their captivity reached Makkahthe relatives of the captives sent ransom to gain their release.Hadrat Zainabra gave her brother-in-law the garnet necklacethat was a wedding gift from her mother. She offered hervaluable necklace to be used as ransom to gain freedom forHadrat Abul-‘Asra.When the Holy Prophetsa saw the necklace among thera19

HADRAT ZAINABarticles of ransom his eyes welled up. It reminded him of hisbeloved wife, Hadrat Khadijahra, who had passed away afterthe cruel boycott which forced the Muslims to take refuge inthe valley of Abi Talib. The memories of his wife came backto him at the sight of the necklace. The Holy Prophetsa askedthe Muslims if they would set Hadrat Abul-‘Asra free andreturn the necklace as well. This is because the necklace wasvery precious and dear to the Holy Prophetsa and remindedhim of his beloved wife Hadrat Khadijahra. The companionsimmediately fulfilled this wish of the Holy Prophetsa withcomplete sincerity, love, and obedience. Therefore HadratAbul-‘Asra was set free and the necklace was returned toHadrat Zainabra.20

6A DAUGHTER’sDIFFICULT MIGRATIonAll the Makkan prisoners were released with thepayment of a ransom. It was against the dignity of prophethoodthat the son-in-law of the Holy Prophetsa should be releasedwithout paying any ransom. Therefore, it was decided that afterreturning to Makkah Hadrat Abul-‘Asra would send HadratZainabra to Madinah as payment for his ransom.6The Holy Prophetsa instructed Hadrat Abul-‘Asraand Hadrat Zaidra bin Harithah, the adopted son of theHoly Prophetsa, to bring Hadrat Zainabra to Madinah.Hadrat Zaidra was instructed to stay outside of Makkahand wait for Hadrat Zainabra, then bring her back to21

HADRAT ZAINABMadinah. Hadrat Abul-‘Asra instructed his younger brother toaccompany Hadrat Zainabra on her journey from Makkah. When preparations for the journey were complete,Hadrat Zainabra mounted her camel and departed forMadinah. Her brother-in-law Kinanah bin Rabi‘ accompaniedher. As it was expected that the disbelievers of Makkah wouldcause trouble, her brother-in-law was armed with arrows and abow. When the disbelievers learned that Hadrat Zainabrahad left Makkah, they became extremely angry. The peopleof Makkah chased after them and surrounded them at aplace called Dhi Tuwa outside of Makkah. A person namedHabbar bin Aswad and another man from this group attackedHadrat Zainabra with a spear. Hadrat Zainabra fell from thecamel to the ground. As a result of this attack she suffered aterrible wound deep inside of her stomach. She lost a great dealof blood from this injury. Her brother-in-law took an arrow out of his quiverand warned the disbelievers that if anyone came nearthem he would shoot them with his arrow. At this threatthe disbelievers quickly dispersed. Abu Sufyan, the leader22

HADRAT ZAINABof the Quraish came forward and said that he wanted totalk. Kinanah put his arrow back in its quiver and askedwhat he wanted to discuss. Abu Sufyan said we havesuffered a humiliating defeat, misfortune, and disgrace atthe hands of Muhammadsa. If you take the daughter ofMuhammadsa from among us, we will be considered weakand cowards. We have no reason to prevent the daughterof Muhammadsa from leaving Makkah if she so wishes. However, my goal is that you return to Makkah for nowand when the situation settles down you can take her toMadinah.Kinanah agreed to this and after a few days hediscreetly handed her over to Hadrat Zaidra bin Harithahwho brought her back from Makkah.723

7A BEAUTIFULMARRIAGEHadrat Zainabwas injured so severely that she livedonly a few years after being wounded. For the rest of her life shesuffered great agony due to the severity of her wound. The knowledge of her ill health grieved the HolyProphetsa deeply and he once said, “She was my best daughterand she was tried due to her love for me.”The departure of Hadrat Zainabra to Madinahgrieved Hadrat Abul-‘Asra greatly because they had abeautiful relationship full of love and affection. Anyseparation from her made him very sorrowful. Oncewhile on a journey to Syria he remembered Hadratra25

HADRAT ZAINABZainabra with these words full of anguish, “When I went pastIram and I remembered Zainab, a prayer for her naturallycame to me that, ‘O Allah! Keep her strong and healthy, shewho is residing at a sacred place (Makkah); she who is thedaughter of the Trustworthy (Muhammadsa); give her thebest reward. Surely, a husband praises that which he knowswell.” Both husband and wife had to suffer six difficult yearsof separation.7BHadrat Abul-‘Asra was highly honest and a successfulmerchant. Once it so happened that he was returning froma business trip to Syria with a caravan of the Quraish. Whenthe Holy Prophetsa learned about this caravan he sent HadratZaidra bin Harithah with one hundred and seventy riders tofollow it. The Muslims apprehended the disbelievers at theplace of ‘Is. Since the Muslims recognized Hadrat Abul‘Asra, he was not stopped. When Hadrat Abul-‘Asra saw theplight of the caravan he immediately went to Madinah andasked the protection of Hadrat Zainabra. It was a customamong the Arabs that if one person extended protection tosomeone the whole tribe was bound by it.At the time the Holy Prophetsa was offering Fajr26

HADRAT ZAINABPrayer. Hadrat Zainabra called out that she had taken HadratAbul-‘Asra under her protection. After completing his prayerthe Holy Prophetsa asked, “O people! Did you hear anything?”They replied saying, “Yes!”When the Holy Prophetsa came home Hadrat Zainabracame to see him and said, “O Prophet of Allah! From thecloser of relations Abul-‘Asra is my first cousin and a moredistant relation he is the father of my children. This is why Ihave extended protection to him.8 Abul-‘Asra was the leader ofthis caravan therefore please kindly return their possessions.”The Holy Prophetsa addressed the people saying “Youknow Abul-‘Asra is my relative. If you choose to favour him byreturning his possessions it will make me happy. However, youhave the authority to do as you wish.” All the people agreed toreturn everything.27

8A Generous ANDHonourable MANThe Holy Prophetinstructed Hadrat Zainabra totake good care of Abul-‘Asra and to treat him with respect. However, he instructed that they should live in separate housesuntil Hadrat Abul-‘Asra accepted Islam. After that HadratAbul-‘Asra took his possessions, kissed his children, bid farewellto his wife and left.9Upon his return to Makkah Hadrat Abul-‘Asracleared all his accounts and one day gathered the Quraishtogether and asked them if anyone had any claim onhim. They replied, “Indeed, now we have no claimconcerning you. May God reward you in an excellentsa29

HADRAT ZAINABmanner. You are indeed an honourable and generousperson.”At this moment Hadrat Abul-‘Asra declared that hehad become a Muslim, and openly recited the Kalimah. Heswore by God that the only thing that had kept him from thecompanionship of the Holy Prophetsa was that the peoplemight think he had accepted Islam in order to be freed fromany monetary obligations. Now that he had fully dischargedall his obligations, nothing could keep him from becoming aMuslim. This incidence shows the greatness of his character.Hadrat Abul-‘Asra was the son-in-law of the most trustworthyperson in the world, the Holy Prophetsa and he was exemplaryin his loyalty to that relationship. In the seventh year after the Hijrah, during the monthof Muharram, Hadrat Abul-‘Asra accepted Islam and migratedfrom Makkah to Madinah. After his arrival in Madinah theHoly Prophetsa sent Hadrat Zainabra to live with him.1030

9THE LoVE ofGRANDCHILDRENHadrat Zainabloved her illustrious father and herhusband, Abul-‘Asra, very much. She used to wear very niceclothes. The attendant of the Holy Prophetsa, Hadrat Anasraonce saw her wearing a beautiful yellow-striped silk shawl.Hadrat Zainabra had two children. Her son’s name was‘Alira and her daughter’s name was Umamahra. ‘Alira was born inMakkah before the migration. He was very dear to the HolyProphetsa. According to some traditions he was alive at thera33

HADRAT ZAINABoccasion of the Battle of Yarmuk which was fought duringthe Khilafat of Hadrat ‘Umarra. According to some otheraccounts he passed away before reaching his maturity. The Holy Prophetsa loved the daughter of HadratZainabra, Hadrat Umamahra, deeply. She was the firstgranddaughter of the Holy Prophetsa. Hadrat Umamahrawas so dear to the Holy Prophetsa that he would not part withher even when offering prayers. He would seat her on hisshoulders while offering prayer. When the Holy Prophetsawould move to his bowing position and prostration, hewould lay her down. Then, when he would raise his headfrom prostration, he would seat her on his shoulders again. The Holy Prophetsa would follow this routine through thecompletion of his prayer. This incident shows the immenselove that the Holy Prophetsa had for daughters.Once the Holy Prophetsa received a precious necklaceas a gift. The Holy Prophetsa came home and said that hewould give it to the person who was most dear to him in thefamily. It was presumed that the Mother of the Believers,Hadrat ‘A’ishahra, would receive it, but the Holy Prophetsaput the necklace around the neck of Hadrat Umamahra.34

HADRAT ZAINABAfter the demise of Hadrat Fatimahra, who was thematernal aunt of Hadrat Umamahra, she was married toHadrat ‘Alira in fulfilment of the wish of Hadrat Fatimahra.1135

10MARTYRDomHadrat Zainab lived a little over a year after HadratraAbul-‘Asra accepted Islam. The cause of her death was thesame wound that she received at the time of her migration. This places her in the circle of martyrs. She passed away in theeighth year after the Hijrah. The Holy Prophetsa pronounceda death sentence for Habbar bin Aswad who had inflictedthe wound on her. However, he pardoned the murderer of hisbeloved daughter when he asked for forgiveness at the timeof the conquest of Makkah.37
