Marketing withGEORGE WATTSIn 2010, when it was taking me a several hours to writeand draw a yoga lesson plan, I decided to createa yoga lesson planning system for myself. It soonmorphed into something called: The Yoga TeacherLesson Plan Kit. I shared it with a fellow yoga teacher6who told me it was the best thing since sliced bread(for a yoga teacher) and it was my yogic duty toshare it. Today more than 1,000 yoga teachers, trainersand trainees worldwide are using it, which is humblingand weird.Marketing TalksRamphal Lecture TheatreLesson planningRamphal Lecture TheatreFriday, 20.00 – 21.30Saturday, 20.00 – 21.00Saturday, 16.30 – 18.00Sunday, 11.30 – 12.45It took me three years of trial and error, with low student attendance, before Iuncovered proven marketing strategiesto fill up my yoga classes. In this talk you’lldiscover my top ten tactics. Plus you’lluncover a nifty way to make taking actionon the tactics enjoyable (yep, I did say“enjoyable”).In 2010, when it was taking me a severalhours to write and draw a yoga lesson plan,I decided to create a yoga lesson planningsystem. SUSANNELAHUSENSusanne’s early yoga backgroundwas in Astanga Vinyasa yoga, which she began to practise in1991 with the late Derek Ireland.Other important influences includethe release-based work of VandaScaravelli, various somatic practices, and the rhythmic and energeticqualities of gyrokinesis and dance. She teaches vinyasa flow at TheLife Centre, somatics at LondonContemporary School of Dance, aswell as experiential anatomy andsequencing on the YogacampusTeacher Training and Yoga Therapycourses. Whilst respecting theunique characteristics of thesedisciplines, Susanne’s approachto teaching has evolved from anawareness of the elements that arefundamental to all movement.CONGRESS20178Balancing Stability andMobility in Vinyasa FlowHypermobility:Finding the Middle WaySESSION A 1Friday, 14.30 – 16.00SESSION D 22Saturday, 09.15 – 10.45SESSION E 34Saturday, 16.30 – 18.00SESSION I 70Sunday, 11.30 – 12.45This vinyasa flow class is structuredto balance stability and mobility.Special emphasis will be givento making the class safe forhypermobile students whilstmaintaining flow, interest andchallenges for everybody. We willlook at sequencing, language andhow to broaden our perception ofprogression. This lecture, with some practicalexplorations, will look at howhypermobility affects the body andmind, how to recognise it and howto work with it in students and in ourown bodies. Today’s culture tendsto see yoga largely as a tool tomake us more flexible and classesoften attract people who possessgreater than average flexibility.Recent research on fascia andstretching is challenging traditionalideas of what is healthy and whatleads to ease of movement.Hypermobility might look like anadvantage for yoga practice, butit needs to be addressed withknowledge and awareness so itdoes not lead to pain and injury.Whilst we are striving for balance,we need to become aware ofindividual anatomical differences, our habitual tendencies, of howwe initiate movement, and howwe can find centring and focuswithout disturbing flow and ease ofbreath. Most of the sequences willbe standing ones, with some supineand seated experiential work andrelaxation at the beginning andthe end.

Studies on the effectsof weightlessness on astronauts returningto earth with backache have cast a newlight on yoga. Weightlessness causes lossof strength in weight bearing muscles – themuscles that enable you to stand upright. This includes small, deep ‘core’ muscles thatprovide precision in the control of workingjoints. Loss of precision results in bump andgrind in the working of the joint that upsetsnerves, causing pain. Research indicatesprecise targeting and strengthening ofspecific ‘core’ muscles alleviate back pain. Can these techniques have a similar effecton other joints, such as shoulders, hips andknees – and can we access these ‘cores’with asana practice?20The Balance of Strength andFlexibility and How to Carefor Your JointsSESSION E 42Saturday, 16.30 – 18.00SESSION H 63Sunday, 9.15 – 10.45What to stretch, how much and why. What happens when we stretch?
