It is thereforeimportant to review the basic Kavanot one should have inmind whenever a blessing is said.In Shulchan Aruch (O”C 5:1), Rav Yosef Karo explains thedifferent meanings ascribed to each name of G-d. The writtenform of the name Hashem, Yud-Key-Vav-Key, denotes thefact that G-d is, was, and always will be in existence. Theactual name of Hashem that is pronounced, Ado-nai, reflectsthe fact that G-d is in control of all, as the root word, Adon, means master.Interestingly, the Vilna Gaon believes that one does not needto have this dual “Kavanah” in mind when reading and recitingthis name of G-d. According to the Vilna Gaon, a person onlyneeds to focus on the pronounced name of G-d and does notneed to reflect on its written meaning. The Vilna Gaon addsthat the only exception to this rule is when one recites KriatShema. Since the Mitzvah of reciting Kriat Shema twice dailyis Biblical, one should have both meanings in mind. Whenreciting the word Elokenu, a person must realize that G-d isan all-powerful being whose dominion extends over all! Finally, it is important to focus on the meaning of the specificBracha that one is reciting, such as Mezonot or Shehakol. If aperson does not have these proper “Kavanot” in mind whenmaking a Bracha, the Bracha is nonetheless valid. Is one allowed to ask a non-Jew to perform aShabbos violation in order to alleviate animalsuffering ("Tzaar Baalei Chaim")?The Halacha recognizes the alleviation of animalsuffering as a virtue of paramount importance, withmost authorities assuming that "Tzaar BaaleiChaim" constitutes a Biblical prohibition. As such, the Shulchan Aruch rules that the Rabbinicprohibition of Amirah L'Nochri (asking a non-Jewto violate Shabbos) is waived in the face of animalsuffering.Nonetheless, the Mishneh Berurah stipulates that ifit is possible to reduce the act performed by the nonJew to a Rabbinic level prohibition, that would bepreferable. For example, an engorged cow is in painand therefore one may ask a non-Jew to milk it onShabbos in order to alleviate its pain. When doingso, however, it would be preferable to ask the nonJew to perform the milking into a bucket filled withfood, as opposed to an empty bucket. This isbecause milking into an empty bucket constitutes aBiblical Shabbos violation, while milking into abucket filled with food constitutes a mere Rabbiniclevel violation. Whenever a more lenient form ofShabbos violation can be utilized to alleviate theanimal's suffering, that is always preferable.Young Israel of Century City 9317 W.
