Workshop DescriptionThis course is designed for residents and fellows interested in advancing their skills andknowledge in the fundaments of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. Rather thanfocusing on specific endoscopic procedures, the curriculum focuses on fundamentalskills and knowledge that are essential to laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgicalprocedures. Both didactic and hands-on laboratory sessions are used to teach differentmethodologies for tissue manipulation and dissection, the safe use of electrosurgeryand ultrasonic energy, laparoscopic suturing, techniques for tissue removal andmorcellation, and both diagnostic and operative hysteroscopic procedures. A fullspectrum of operative laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures including associatedcomplications will be critically reviewed using an interactive case-study format. Alsothe new spectrum of robotics in minimally invasive gynecology will be discussed anddemonstrated. The course emphasizes basic surgical principle Emphasizing riskreduction and strategic thinking to insure risk reduction and optimal patient care.ObjectivesFollowing this workshop, the participant should be able to: Understand patient preparation for endoscopic surgery Understand and apply methods to safely enter theperitoneal cavity Describe fundamental laparoscopic and hysteroscopicanatomy Understand how to effectively utilize electrosurgeryand ultrasonic energy Understand different methods for hemostasis, tissuemanipulation and dissection Understand the basis and methods for adhesionprevention Describe the components and optics of hysteroscopicinstrumentation Understand the principles for using hysteroscopicdistention media Perform intracorporeal and extracorporeal suturing Perform tissue removal by bagging and morcellation Utilize hysteroscopy for diagnostic and operativeprocedures Understand the requirements for utilizing robotics Understand how to reduce risk of laparoscopic andhysteroscopic complications
