FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITYDepartment of Biological SciencesZOO 4733---Survey of Regional Anatomy (FALL 2016)Lectures: Tuesdays 7:50-10:30pm (AHC2 160) and online sessions via Mediasite (TBDwith links)Course description:This is a one semester lecture course in regional human anatomy primarily for preprofessional track majors: Pre-Med, Pre-Dental, Pre-Opt., etc. Prerequisites are incongruence with the University course catalog: BSC 1011, BSC 1011L, CHM 1046,CHM 1046L, and PHY 2049/ PHY 2054 with labs.Course Objectives:Upon completion of this course, the ZOO 4733 student will:1) Understand the major human anatomical regions (thorax, abdomen, pelvis, lowerlimb, back, upper limb, head and neck) via the organ system components (ie. osteology,myology, angiology, and neurology).2) Understand the structural role of the various anatomical regions, their relation toadjacent areas, and clinical correlates.Required text:McKinley, M and O’ Loughlin,V.D. Grading policy:There will be four multiple-choice exams administered this semester, of which all scoreswill be calculated for the final grade. The grading scale for the semester average is asfollows: A 100-90, B 89-80, C 79-70, D 69-60, F 59-0 (no plus or minuses). Examsmust be taken during the designated times/dates (missed exams will result in a zeroscore). There will be no make-up exams administered unless circumstances beyond thestudent’s control arise and are immediately accompanied by the appropriatedocumentation: 1) Death in immediate family member requires official bereavementstatement; 2) Student/ immediate family member with acute/terminal illness requiresofficial hospital/clinic notification; 3) Traffic accident requires official accidentreport ; 4) Jury duty requires county clerk summons ; and 5) Military assignment/deployment. The aforementioned will be taken into consideration or, if applicable,allow students to request an «Incomplete » grade. Candidates for grades of «Incomplete » include those students that have completed 60% of the course worksatisfactorily (C grade or higher) and cannot justifiably finish the course (plannedvacation/business trips do not constitute a serious interruption).If any of the preceding information elicits a conflict of interest,you are strongly urged to DROP the course.Cheating policy : Cheating (ie. possession of electronic devices[I-phones/watches], crib sheets/notes, glaring at another’s paper)during any of the administered exams is a direct violation ofFIU’s student conduct code and will not be tolerated in thiscourse.The instructor will be proctoring exams diligently;violators will either receive a failing semester grade or besubjected to university administrative action, ALL this canprocure without warning.“Florida International University is a community dedicated to generatingand imparting knowledge through excellent teaching and research, therigorous and respectful exchange of ideas, and community service. Mediasite Online Instructional VideosA portion of the course content will be delivered via pre-recorded online videoscourtesy of FIU’s Division of Technology Mediasite. Below is a tutorial on how to accessthe video sessions. The videos can be viewed at the FIU student computer labs, PCs,tablets, etc; however, please make sure that you have the appropriate media support ifyou are utilizing off-campus devices (see info. below) in order to ensure smoothstreaming. It is HIGHLY recommended that all view the sessions early in the week (ie.during your scheduled lecture session) just in case you encounter technical difficultiesthat can be rectified by the Mediasite associates (mediasiteadmins@fiu.edu)accordingly, in lieu of encountering problems during the weekend when their availabilityis limited (do not wait until exam day to view the sessions). Please be advised, anytechnical difficulties regarding video access, viewing, downloading, etc. DO NOT e-mailthe instructor, please address all inquiries to mediasiteadmins@fiu.edu. The associatesat Mediasite will be more than happy to work with all students and resolve any and allissues. Safety tip: Do not view session while lying in bed, you may doze off and dropyour device!How to access videos:1. Click desired link.2. A mostly blank page will open up with a button titled "authenticate".3. Click “Authenticate”.4. A website containing the FIU logo should pop up asking for your FIU credentials. Theuser name and password they require is the same as your FIU user name and passwordused to access the my.fiu.edu account.5. Log in and take notes!Also, please read the following useful information courtesy of the Mediasite associates:1. When students log in to Mediasite, they must use their username (e.g., gomezf) andNOT their PantherID. The password is their MyFIU password.2. Tips on the successful completion of this course:1. Attendance for in-class lecture sessions is mandatory! Poor attendanceculminates in poor grades!2. Make major emphasis on careful note-taking, transcribing, pre-reading skills, andaccessing/viewing videos on a timely basis.3. In the case of missed lecture days or impending absences, students are responsiblefor obtaining downloaded lecture notes and in-class announcementinformation from fellow classmates (do not summon-e-mail the instructor forthis).4. All electronic communication equipment should be silenced (ie. I-phones), so as tonot encumber the learning and thinking process of others. Photographing/imagecapturing of in-class lecture sessions is not allowed.5. Disruptive behavior during lectures/exams is deemed inappropriateand will not be tolerated.
