ILAGetting to know theDear Members and Friends,The International Leadership Association is a healthy, growing network ofleadership professionals around the globe committed to a mission of “promoting adeeper understanding of leadership knowledge and practices for the greater goodof individuals and communities worldwide.”Cynthia CherreyILA CEO & PresidentAs relevant guideposts for our work, barometers of ouraccomplishments, and indicators of what more we must doto live fully into our unique identity, the ILA draws uponthree strategic imperatives:1. Advance the global study and practice of leadership;2. Develop and engage a more global and diverse membership;3. Strengthen ILA as a dynamic, sustainable, global organization.This annual report shares considerable data on the progress that hasbeen made over the past year. We’d like to take a moment to highlight afew notable accomplishments before you delve into the report details.An impressive 41% of members completed an association wide survey inKatherine Tyler ScottILA Board Chair2015 that collected information on the ILA member experience, our collectiveglobal outreach, and member demographics. We know that the core strengthof ILA resides in our members, within the connections they make and the gifts and talents they offer.Data collected in the survey will be used to assess member needs and help us provide improved andexpanded services to members.Our incredibly dedicated board contributed immeasurably and significantly to the association andits events and programs. The board’s governance leadership is strong and its focus remains onpositioning the ILA for present and future financial stability and success. In 2015, 100% of ILA’s boardsupported the association financially. The board established a Global Expansion Task Force to studyand make recommendations to ensure organizational identity and integrity.Through an experienced and dedicated staff, we continued to build global relationships andcollaborative ventures with individuals and organizations via meetings, topical conferences, webinars,electronic communications, and publications. In 2015, our Leadership Perspectives webinars had1678 participants from 41 different countries. ILA’s 17th annual global conference in Barcelona,Spain, had 1021 participants with 31% of the attendees hailing from outside of the United States.ILA is a unique global network — a network of leadership scholars and researchers, educators andstudents, coaches and consultants, public leaders and executives. We are a network of inquiry andideas, imagination and creativity, innovation and best practices. Above all, we are a network whoseexistence is rooted in deeply held values. In this time of great change and volatility, ILA stands as aninspirational and aspirational platform for improving the research, the teaching, and the practice ofleadership — contributing to the common good around the world.22015 ILA Annual Report

The 2015 conference theme challenged participantsto think broader and bolder as they explored leading across,beyond, and between borders and generations. LEA is an inclusive program designed totake participants through facilitated experiential sessions onboth content and pedagogy. Academy facilitators — includingtop leadership educators and published authors from the field —modeled best practices and provided opportunities for participantsto engage in a practice-feedback-reflection loop. Leadership 2050 examinesthe issues, drivers, and contexts that will most likely influenceleaders and followers over the next 35 years.The Building Leadership Bridges Book Series: This seriescaptures the best contemporary thinking about leadershipfrom a diverse range of scholars, practitioners, and educatorsworking around the globe. In keeping with the mission of theILA, the book series connects ways of researching, imagining,and experiencing leadership across cultures, over time, and around theworld. The series is published by Emerald Group Publishing, based in the UK.Women as Global LeadersGlobal leadership is a small but growing field of researchresponding to the increasingly complex, globalized world we leadin. Within this nascent field, the study and development of womenglobal leaders is even smaller. Volume two of ILA’s Women &Leadership book series takes a step toward filling the gap.Women and Leadership Around the WorldWomen’s leadership in four regions of the world — the MiddleEast, Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific — is examined.Problematizing and historicizing women’s limited access to power,the authors offer recommendation for change that would increasewomen’s access to positions of authority and increase theireffectiveness as leaders.The Women & Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice Book Series:This cross-disciplinary series, published by Information Age Publishing,draws from current research findings, development practices, pedagogy,and lived experience to deliver provocative thinking that enhancesleadership knowledge and improves leadership development of womenaround the world.102015 ILA Annual Report

The book delivers practical,succinct strategies for developing efficient, effective leadership skills.Leadership JournalsTo advance the development of the field of leadership studies as a discipline, the ILAcontinued to support the following journals and make them available to all associationmembers. HighlightsProgramAwardsLeadership Legacy ProgramILA’s Leadership Legacy Program honors individuals who have made a significant lifetimecontribution to the field of leadership through their published works and influential support ofleadership knowledge and practice. Each recipient is presented with ILA’s Lifetime AchievementAward and has their work celebrated at our annual global conference. After the conference theyare added to the ILA Virtual Hall of Fame where oral histories, conducted in partnership with theRandall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University, are made available tothe public.ILA Lifetime Achievement Awards2015 Honoree: Larraine MatusakSpeaker, author, university president, and international leadership expertLarraine Matusak has had a profound impact on people’s lives around theworld. She founded the College of Alternative Programs at the Universityof Evansville and, as one of the original board members of the Council forAdult Experiential Learning, promoted innovative concepts and trainedthousands. Perhaps her biggest achievements were in the work she didat the W.K. Kellogg Foundation where she led international grant-makingefforts and helped fund a generation of leadership programs worldwide.As Matusak is fond of saying, “Create the future! Leadership is everyone’sresponsibility.”Georgia Sorenson andLarraine Matusak(L-R)2015 Honoree: Boas Shamir (posthumously)Boas Shamir contributed chapters to numerous books and publishedmore than 70 articles, most significant in the areas of leadership and theself, social distance and charisma, followership, narratives and life stories, and time. He servedmany years on the editorial boards of several journals including Leadership and the InternationalJournal of Organizational Behavior and was named “Best Reviewer” by The Leadership Quarterly. Agenerous man with his colleagues, Shamir had that rare gift of making the people around himbetter. Shamir was brilliant and critical, and challenged people to do more.2015 Honoree: Georgia SorensonThirty years ago Sorenson co-created with James MacGregor Burns a plan to create a newdiscipline, Leadership Studies. She established or supported refereed scientific leadershipjournals; co-founded a professional association (the ILA); co-edited the award-winning,Encyclopedia of Leadership (a disciplinary resource); and, among other achievements, chronicledthe benchmarks for a consolidation of leadership theory in The Quest for a General Theory ofLeadership. From her work as an analyst for the U.S. Commission of Civil Rights to the themesin her recent book, The Power of Invisible Leadership, Sorenson’s work has always been aimedtoward the larger question, leadership for what.122015 ILA Annual Report

Financials2015The ILA ended the 2015 fiscal year on a solid financial note, reaching an all-time high forrevenues by exceeding 1m for the first time. While the revenues exceeded the budget by18%, ILA’s total expenses were 1% over budget, delivering a positive net of over 157,000.These result well-position the ILA to focus on strategic growth initiatives.The Board established a reserve policy in 2015 to provide a resource for unexpecteddownturns and create a source for internal investments in the association.
