BPSS challenges participants to expand their understandingof service, connect academic and community-based experiences, and build their capacity to help effect change. Whilecompleting the program components, participants build portfolios that reflect their learning and unique experiencesthroughout North Carolina, the nation and the world.Since 2003, BPSS has connected students with similar interests and provided special opportunities for leadershipdevelopment and community engagement. This year, participating students reported service with more than 1,000community and campus organizations. In 2011, the Center announced the establishment of the Walter White BuckleyJr. Endowment. This endowment honors Walter Buckley, a business entrepreneur who applied his professional expertiseand personal commitment to making a difference in the lives of others and who exemplifies the qualities the programinstills in Carolina students. The Walter White Buckley Jr. Endowment ensures Buckley Public Service Scholars willgraduate for generations to come.Program componentsThe Buckley Public Service Scholars program model incorporates a substantial commitment to public service andalso several forms of structured training and reflection on that service. While in the program, many students areintroduced to social entrepreneurship, community-based research, advocacy and philanthropy as important forms ofpublic service. BPSS is open to all full-time, undergraduate students with at least four semesters remaining at Carolina.Transfer students must have three semesters remaining to enroll. To successfully complete the program, students build aportfolio that includes the following program components:4Corpsrtunitys a unique oppoeroffcevierScenter for Publilty and staffThe Carolina Cgether with facutoemcototst-year studenrience infor selected firsd practical expeanicemadacrtheies, year to deepenriety of activitivaahthroughout theugroThat Carolina.ring their timedueics for publicrvseicblpung opportunitiegieremdangnn about existiree first-yearparticipants learpus.
