I. Fatherhood (13-47)

Transcription

I. Fatherhood (13-47) Once Jesus claimed to be the light ofthe world, the Jewish leaders begin toverbally attack Him. They told Him He was lying and thatHis testimony was invalid. John 8:13—So the Pharisees said toHim, “You are testifying aboutYourself; Your testimony is not true.”

I. Fatherhood (13-47) The Jewish leaders clearlyunderstood that Jesus was claimingto be able to do things that only Godcould do.

I. Fatherhood (13-47) John 8:18-20—18 “I am He whotestifies about Myself, and the Fatherwho sent Me testifies about Me." 19So they were saying to Him, "Whereis Your Father?” Jesus answered,“You know neither Me nor My Father;if you knew Me, you would know MyFather also.”

I. Fatherhood (13-47) 20These words He spoke in thetreasury, as He taught in the temple;and no one seized Him, because Hishour had not yet come.

I. Fatherhood (13-47) Even though the Jewish leaderswanted to have Jesus arrested, theywere unable to do so “because Hishour had not yet come.” The Jews claimed that God andAbraham were their fathers.

I. Fatherhood (13-47) In John 8:39-40, Jesus told them thatif Abraham was their father, theywouldn’t be trying to kill Him. And, in John 8:42, He said that if Godwas their Father, they would loveHim. He also told them that it wasn’t Godwho was their Father, it was the devil.

I. Fatherhood (13-47) John 8:44—”You are of your fatherthe devil, and you want to do thedesires of your father. He was amurderer from the beginning, anddoes not stand in the truth becausethere is no truth in him. Whenever hespeaks a lie, he speaks from his ownnature, for he is a liar and the fatherof lies.”

I. Fatherhood (13-47) In Verse 47 Jesus had told the Jewishleaders that the reason they didn’thear His words was because theywere “not of God.” They considered themselves the mostspiritual people in the world.

II. A demon-possessedSamaritan (48-50) John 8:48—48 The Jews answeredand said to Him, “Do we not sayrightly that You are a Samaritan andhave a demon?” Calling someone a Samaritan was theworst possible insult as far as Jewswere concerned.

II. A demon-possessedSamaritan (48-50) They believed that Samaritans werespiritual and physical half-breeds andthey would have nothing to do withthem. John 8:49-50—49 Jesus answered, “Ido not have a demon; but I honor MyFather, and you dishonor Me. 50 “But Ido not seek My glory; there is Onewho seeks and judges.

III. Never see Death (51-53) John 8: 51—”Truly, truly, I say to you,if anyone keeps My word he willnever see death.” Notice that He doesn’t say, “He whokeeps my word will never die,”because those who follow Jesus dodie physically.

III. Never see Death (51-53) What He says is that when they diethey will “never see death.” They will pass immediately from thislife into eternal glory. Those without Christ in their life passfrom death to death.

III. Never see Death (51-53) John 5:24—Truly, truly, I say to you,he who hears My word, and believesHim who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, buthas passed out of death into life.

III. Never see Death (51-53) John 8:52-53—52 The Jews said toHim, “Now we know that You have ademon. Abraham died, and theprophets also; and You say, ‘If anyonekeeps My word, he will never taste ofdeath.’ 53 Surely You are not greaterthan our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do Youmake Yourself out to be?”

IV. Abraham Rejoiced (54-56) John 8:54-56—54 Jesus answered, “IfI glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; itis My Father who glorifies Me, ofwhom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 andyou have not come to know Him, but Iknow Him; and if I say that I do notknow Him, I will be a liar like you, butI do know Him and keep His word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced to seeMy day, and he saw it and was glad.”

IV. Abraham Rejoiced (54-56) Here Jesus claims to be the only onewho completely knows God becauseHe is the only one who has been withHim from the very beginning. Abraham actually testified about Himand rejoiced in seeing His day come.

IV. Abraham Rejoiced (54-56) This passage really helps usunderstand how to read the OldTestament. Everything in the Old Testamentpointed toward Jesus.

IV. Abraham Rejoiced (54-56) Luke 24:25-27—25 And He said to them,“O foolish men and slow of heart tobelieve in all that the prophets havespoken! 26 Was it not necessary for theChrist to suffer these things and to enterinto His glory?” 27 Then beginning withMoses and with all the prophets, Heexplained to them the thingsconcerning Himself in all theScriptures.

IV. Abraham Rejoiced (54-56) The entire Bible, not just the NewTestament, is about Jesus. Hebrews 12:1—Therefore, since wehave so great a cloud of witnessessurrounding us, let us also lay asideevery encumbrance and the sin whichso easily entangles us, and let us runwith endurance the race that is setbefore us.

V. I Am (57-59) John 8:57-59—57 So the Jews said toHim, “You are not yet fifty years old,and have You seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I sayto you, before Abraham was born, Iam.” 59 Therefore they picked upstones to throw at Him, but Jesus hidHimself and went out of the temple.

V. I Am (57-59) This statement is one of the mostsignificant statements in the wholeBible. This is one of Jesus’ clearest claimsof divinity. Literally this statement would betranslated, “Before Abraham cameinto being, I existed.”

V. I Am (57-59) Exodus 3:14—God said to Moses, “IAM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thusyou shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘IAM has sent me to you.’” Jesus’ language clearly echoes whatGod said to Moses in Exodus 3: 14. This phrase cannot be interpreted inany other way than as a claim to beGod.

V. I Am (57-59) John 8:59—Therefore they picked upstones to throw at Him. Even though the Jewish leaders wereready to kill Jesus right there andthen, it was not God’s time for Him todie. They clearly understood Jesus’statement to be blasphemy.
