Lettert o o u r re a d e r sDear Residents,Once again, you have confirmed our value to you and your family bysupporting next year’s budget. A two-to-one margin is impressive andgoes to all the small and large things we do every day to serve yourneeds. Everything matters, and Cold Spring Harbor is very lucky tohave a beautiful library building with technology and books, excellentservices, and a staff that understands what the community wants, andis ready to serve the people who walk in the door. The new fiscalyear begins July 1, but planning to implement the new programs andservices funded by your tax dollars begins immediately. Look for freeand faster WiFi, more copies of popular titles and eBooks, and iPadstoo.Do you have an unlimited text plan? If so, sign up to get a text messagewhen items are ready for pick-up. To learn how, see page 5, or ask alibrarian for assistance. Each month, we receive hundreds of onlinehold requests for titles. Why get a voicemail message on your homephone when you can get a text message instead?Have you downloaded a free eBook yet? Since we joined the eBookprogram, over 4,000 titles have been downloaded. You may downloadto a Kindle, iPad, Nook, iPhone, or other devices. Titles may beborrowed for 14 days and may be borrowed again if you need moretime. I noticed that my eReader remembered exactly where I left offwhen I downloaded the title a second time; a little spooky, but veryconvenient! With the warm weather here to stay, we begin to fill our calendars withwarm weather programs. We are delighted to announce that the LibraryFoundation will once again sponsor SUMMERFEST on the last dayof school. This tradition began during our years in the CommunityCenter on Goose Hill Road, and has become a wonderful last day ofschool party for our community’s families. Like last year, the event willbe held at the library. For the first time, a new group of parents andchildren called “The Who’s” have volunteered to grow vegetables in theChildren’s Garden adjacent to the Children’s Library. The crops will beplanted and maintained by “The Who’s” and donated to area serviceorganizations.Last year, resident college professor from SUNY Farmingdale, ChrisNehlen, asked if I had a project for graphic design students. Previousclasses in this design program had created a completely new librarynewsletter format and produced finding aids for our environmentalmural in the Storytime Room, so I said, “Yes.” This time, the assignmentwas a new logo for the library, a symbol to represent our current andfuture educational role.Thank YouBNY Mellon generouslysponsored Election Day eventsOn Election Day, April 3, 2012, over 230 adults andchildren voted, learned about Costa Rica, decoratedcupcakes, and participated in our first Tots Night Out.All these events were generously sponsored by BNY MellonWealth Management.Poll watcherIt was almost 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012,when Bob Madden of Sterling Wealth arrived. In 1967, threeTalve brothers commissioned the piece as a corporatelogo for their company, Franklin Stainless Industries. In2011, the Talve family was seeking a new home for theirimpressive sculpture and contacted the artist’s daughter,Susie Gach Peelle. The Peelles are longtime friends of BessStout Fuchs, President, CSH Library Friends Foundation, and thus the notion of relocating the birds to CSH wasborn. On Tuesday, April 3, 2012, a rededication washeld, complete with the CSH High School Vocal JazzGroup, and brief speeches by members of the community.Gratitude to CSH Laboratory’s AV crew for the terrificsound system.Susie Gach PeelleVocal GroupTalve brothersI hope to catch you reading very soon,Helen M.
