ORDER OF THE COIFThe Order of the Coif is the national honor society devoted to the encouragement of high standards of legal scholarshipwith chapters in leading law schools throughout the country. Graduates in the top ten percent of the class are eligible forelection to the Order of the Coif. The Order takes its name from the word used to designate the cap which all members of the Order were required to wear. This cap or coif was originally of white linen or silk, forming a close–fitting hood, seen today in old engravings, pictures andeffigies of distinguished Judges and Serjeants. Serjeants were an order of the highest rank of barrister at the English or Irishbar. By the ancient privileges of the Serjeants, this coif was not to be taken off, even in the royal presence. When wigs cameinto fashion the coif was changed, no longer worn as a complete hood, but merely as a circular piece of white linen fastened tothe top of the wig.Mark Richard Bell IIIJennifer C.
