Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.0NASAROBOTIC MINING COMPETITION (RMC)LUNABOTICS 2021FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)SPECIAL STATEMENTNASA has been closely monitoring developments of the COVID-19 outbreak. We are aware thatmany of the student teams participating in the seven Artemis Student Challenges must cope withlimited or suspended physical access to campuses, travel restrictions or other impediments thatmay affect their ability to participate in the challenges as proposed. Due to these hurdles wecontinue to face, and out of an abundance of caution for the teams and our workforce, activitiesfor each of these events may look different than originally planned. It should be noted that thetechnical work completed by each team will not go unnoticed.Challenge managers for each activity will be in contact with participants on specifics and changesto the challenges, if any. We will continue to monitor the situation, and remain flexible and adaptas it evolves. Thank you for your patience and understanding. 8.034Q: Is it correct to assume that wireless communication to the robot must be executedusing a wireless router connected to the NASA switch? Whereas the robot connects to theteam supplied router that is connected to the NASA ethernet switch and the team accessesthe robot through NASA’s network? If not, could we get clarification on what the networkcommunication requirements are?34A: Per the rules, yes, the teams will communicate with their robot through a wireless router thatyou provide. The wireless router will be connected to a NASA-provided router or switch that isconnected to a router or switch the control room where you will drive your robot. There will beports available in the control room for you to connect to your team’s control system.33Q: I noticed the FAQs section mention there is no longer a requirement for the virtualoutreach (below). Does this mean we no longer need to submit a public outreach report? With COVID, I'm a bit confused on the outreach requirements this year.33A: Perhaps the response to FAQ 14 was not clearly worded, so let’s use a different approach. The requirement for Rule 6.3 PHASE II - PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT REPORT (20 POINTS)remains unchanged. The requirement for “Public Outreach - Cyber-Learning Environment inplace” on the deadlines page is no longer required. The schools can determine when and whatplatform they can use for this requirement.32Q: Can you provide a list of team for RMC 2021?32A: Yes we can, please see below.

Please read FAQ 30 for direction. 6.030Q: Can you provide teams who are struggling with this requirement of the ExecutiveSummary submission as to what impact deviations from the submitted designs will havefor them when they submit their Systems Report and Presentation?30A: The impact will be determined by the quality of the Systems Engineering Paper explainingthe changes from the Project Management Plan and in your Presentation and Demonstration. Itis okay to have changes based on sound engineering practices and principles based on yourtrade-off studies, you just have to explain them. Please keep in mind the purpose of the ExecutiveSummary is to give the reader a high-level view of your project (not a detailed view). Rarely doesthe initial design look like the proof-of-concept. 5.0EXECUTIVE SUMMARY29Q: The rubric states that there needs to be a link to the CAD model; what kind of linkshould this be to? A Google drive folder? A website? Some other kind of storage?29A: We do not have a preference, but we do need to be able to access and view it.28Q: Would a multimedia site like GrabCAD be suitable to share our CAD model on? Doyou have other recommendations for the multimedia link?28A: We do not have a preference, but we do need to be able to access and view it.27Q: What format and content should the robot animation have?27A: We do not have a preference, but we do need to be able to access and view it.26Q: What are the specifics for the CAD file submission? (e.g. file type, file location)26A: We do not have a preference, but we do need to be able to access and view it.25Q: Regarding the Executive Summary - Do electrical components need to be includedin the CAD?

Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.025A: See the “CLARIFICATION” below24Q: When we submit a link to our CAD files in the appendix, is there arequired/preferred file format (Solidwork’s native file type, STEP file, etc.)? Our plan is tosubmit both our Solidworks files as well as a generic CAD format to be safe, but wewanted to know if there was a specific type or version required. Thank you for anyinformation you can provide about this question.24A: We do not have a preference, but we do need to be able to access and view it.23Q: Should we include images in the one-page paper itself or just the appendix?23A: The team makes this decision.22Q: How detailed should the parts list mentioned in the "appendix" section be? While wehave a majority of the mechanical design complete, we have not finished building the robotand we will not have a full parts list for some time. Should we just include a list of partswe've purchased so far? Should the parts list include exact costs and part numbers?Should we include non-mechanical items (e.g. PCBs and components such as resistorsand ICs) or just the items from the mechanical system, seeing as all other items in thiscategory are mechanical?22A: See the “CLARIFICATION” below“CLARIFICATION”The Executive Summary:Cover – 1 PageExecutive Summary – 1 PageAppendix – No Page limitThe Executive Summary should be clear and concise and include only the most relevantinformation regarding the team’s design project. The executive summary should be written insuch a way that someone unfamiliar with the project would be able to understand thepurpose of your project and the final outcome. Please keep in mind the purpose of theexecutive summary is to give the reader a high-level view of your project. It should be able tostand-alone apart from a full report detailing your project. Please apply sound engineeringpractices and principles. You may want to consider uploading your video to any public YouTubeaccount and then send us the link. Teams can create an account if they don’t already have one, which is also good for your team or school’s marketing purposes. YouTube accounts are freeand easy and widely regarded as positive. 4.021Q: How close does the physical robot have to be to the CAD model submitted?21A: The physical robot should be built from the design in the CAD model and therefore it shouldbe accurate to within a reasonable manufacturing tolerance.20Q: Will there be an artificial delay in communication or a bandwidth limit?20A:There will be no artificial delays and no bandwidth limit but competitors are encouragedthrough the points structure to minimize bandwidth use.19Q: In section 8.4 Navigation protocol point 8 (bottom of page 42), it states we are notallowed to use an IMU-enabled GPS device. Our team was donated 2, Intel Realsense D435i

Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.0(depth cameras) that contain an IMU, but no GPS functionality. Would these be acceptableto use? The rules seemed unclear to us, as they only mention not being able to use IMUenabled GPS devices specifically, not other types of IMU-enabled devices. We recognizethat on point 6 in the same section it states we can use an IMU, but we wanted to makesure that this camera with an internal IMU would also be acceptable.19A: An IMU without GPS functionality is acceptable. GPS is not available on the Moon and shallnot be used in the Lunabotics Cometition. 3.018Q: Initially we had registered our team for the complete competition and at that time itlooked like we would be able to access campus resources at the end of Fall or start ofWinter term. Over the course of the last two weeks the situation has changed and it nowappears that we will not have access to equipment and facilities necessary to build ourrover until the end of March at the earliest. Given the competitions timeline, and thecontinued uncertainty of the pandemic we no longer feel able to participate in the full threephases of the competition. In the rules it is clear that a team registering for phase I onlycannot change their registration to compete in the full competition, but would it be possiblefor our team to switch from the full competition to phase I only?18A: Attention all teams, due to the continuing uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, yourability to access your school’s facilities and other resources appear to be in a constant state ofchange and are in doubt.1. Lunabotics will now allow teams registered for the whole competition theflexibility to move from Phase I, Phase II and Phase III, to Phase I – Design It,only.2. Once made, the decision to move to Phase I – Design It, is final.3. Send your requests change your team status to KSC-Robotic-MiningCompetition@mail.nasa.gov by Wednesday Oct. 28, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. noonEastern Time. That is all, good luck, practice social distancing guidelines, and use the Vulcan salute whengreeting each other.17Q: What are the Bot Shop hours?17A: The revised Bot Shop Hours are:The Bot Shop HoursDayOpenMonday:12 NoonTue-Wed-Thurs: 9 a.m.Friday:9 a.m.Close5 p.m.5 p.m.12 Noon16Q: Each mining lane is divided into two halves, an obstacle area and an excavationarea. Where are the starting zones?16A: See Registration, Rules and Rubrics, Page 38, Regolith Mining Arena , the colorwheels are the approximate starting zones.15Q: What separates the two mining lanes? We are right next to the other team, but whatseparates us from each other?15A: The only information available is that a divider may be placed in the mining arena.

Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.014Q: What is the “Public Outreach - Cyber-Learning Environment in place” date ondeadlines page?14A: This is no longer a requirement. It was a due date for the teams to have a virtual channelset-up and online.13Q: Exactly where will the collection sieves be located along the back wall of the arena?13A: The location will be decided before the on-site competition12Q: What is the required page length of the Executive Summary? One statement on page17 of the rules states a maximum of 5 pages, while another statement on that same pagestates a maximum of 1 page, not including the cover.12A: See FAQ 10 (1 Page).11Q: Parts of the Executive Summary rubric (particularly the part about how we achievedour goals, as well as the full-robot CAD model) suggest that the entire robot design shouldbe completed by the time of writing. For teams participating in all three phases of thecompetition, their robot design may not be 100% finished at this time; is it acceptable todescribe the design thus far and to provide the most-recent (but not 100% complete) CADmodel?11A: Teams must complete the requirements listed in Phase I. Teams will be invited to competein Phase II based on the work submitted in Phase I.10Q: In section 5.2 Phase I – Executive Summary (page 17), at the end of the secondparagraph describing the report, it states “Maximum length of the summary is 5 pages.”However, in the table immediately below that, it states under “Structure, Content andIntrinsic Merit” that the report must be a “maximum of 1 page not including the cover.” Isthis a typographical error, or are the page limits with regards to two different parts of thereport: the full document (for the 5 page maximum) and just the written summary in thebody of the report (1 page)?10A: “IT’S A TYPO ” 5.2 PHASE I – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY is REVISED as Follows:Each team participating in Phase 1 of Lunabotics is required to submit an executive summary atthe end of Phase 1. The executive summary should be clear and concise and include only themost relevant information regarding the team’s design project. The executive summary should bewritten in such a way that someone unfamiliar with the project would be able to understand thepurpose of your project and the final outcome. Please keep in mind the purpose of the executivesummary is to give the reader a high-level view of your project. It should be able to stand-aloneapart from a full report detailing your project. Each team must submit an executive summaryelectronically in PDF by the deadline. A minimum score of 7 out of 10 possible points must beachieved to qualify to win in this category. This summary will contribute to the overall decisionmade by the judges as to which teams advance to Phase 2. The judges’ decision is final. Teamswho have selected to compete in Phase 1 only will be judged and scored independently fromthose teams who have selected to be eligible to compete in Phase 2. The Phase 1 ONLY teamwith the winning executive summary will receive a team plaque andindividual certificates. Second and third place winners will receive certificates. Maximum lengthof the summary is 5 pages.9Q: We were wondering if the deadline for the project management plan is still onSeptember 30th. We saw that the deadline for registration was pushed back to September23rd so we were wondering if other deadlines changed.9A: At the present time, there are no changes to any other deadlines.

Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.0 2.08Q: When does registration close?8A: By popular demand the RMC: Lunabotics registration period is extended to 12:00 p.m. noonEastern Time Wednesday September 23, 2020. 1.07Q: Our team has some concerns with the recent rule change stating the PHD students areno longer able to participate in the completion. Is this just a miswording where it wasintended that those students are not allowed to use it has part of their course material oris it intended that they can only act in an advisory role. If you could clarify this rule changeit would be appreciated as we had several PHD students that were looking forward topatriating this year.7A: This is a good question that led to a better discussion, well done. Rule 3.3.6 is revised asfollows:3.3 TEAM REQUIREMENTS1. Students can be members of only one team.2. Each team must have its own working robot(s).3. Faculty advisor/staff/team lead must be registered with the school.4. Team members must be cleared by NASA Security to attend this event.5. Students must be currently enrolled and in good standing with the school.6. The size of the team is at the discretion of the school, but the team must include at leasttwo undergraduate students and no Ph.D. students postdoctoral researchers or postdocs. 0.06Q: Regarding Rule 8.1.2 (pg. 36): In the 2022 NASA RMC: Lunabotics competition:1. Is any part manufacturing done by a sponsor, whether free or discounted, illegal?2. How is 50% of a robot's content determined? (weight, volume, number ofsubsystems, etc.)3. What qualifies as a modification to a system?4. How will modifications and replacements be recorded and/or determined?6A: Those questions and more will be addressed in the RMC: Lunabotics 2022, RegistrationRules and Rubrics.5Q: We also have another question. The rules call for a Project Management plan. Is thisthe same as the System Engineering plan that we had last year?5A: In a manner of speaking, yes. The Plan for Systems Engineering, not to be confused with theSystems Engineering Paper. Please read the rubrics.4Q: In the event our team will not be allowed to travel to Florida for the contest, will theteam be able to make a remote presentation of their project?4A: Yes.3Q: I am a former Robotic Mining Competition participant (2012-2014). Do you know ifprevious systems engineering papers and presentation from those years were uploadedin NTRS or another site for access? I was on the University of Akron team those threeyears.

Robotic Mining Competition (RMC): Lunabotics 2021FAQ Rev 8.03A: Systems engineering papers and presentation and demonstrations are deleted immediatelyafter the competition. You will have to contact the school directly.2Q: In past years, teams that are not within the first 50 to sign up are put on a waiting list.Based on section 3.4 (#2: ".the 50 highest scoring teams from Phase I “Design It” . willbe invited to the Phase II “Build It” challenge) it seems like this is no longer the case andthere is not a limit to the number of teams that can sign up for Phase I "Design it
