Cabinet OverlaysMeasure Twice,Order Once!Accurate measurements are crucialto a successful refacing project.Measure the width and height, write it down, then measure again. This will help ensure that you havemeasured correctly. Before you begin, you need to knowwhat type of cabinets you have. This will determine the method forordering. You will need to calculatethe finish size of doors, drawers, andmaterials to enter onto the order form.Framed cabinetFramed cabinets are sometimes referred to as face-frameor traditional cabinets. They have a wood frame on the front, called a face frame. The face frame is usually constructed of3/4” thick solid hardwood, and are the same species as thecabinet doors. This frame contains both vertical memberscalled “stiles” and horizontal members called “rails.” Alldoor hinges and drawer glides attach to the face frame.Illustrations show framed cabinets withvarious overlays. The bigger the overlay, themore face frame is covered, and the lessframe is exposed after installing the doors. All examples show a 20” wide opening. To determine the door size, add the overlayall the way around the opening. For a typical1/2” overlay, add 1/2” to the left, and 1/2” tothe right, to get 21” for the door width.Cabinet frame1/4”1/2”5/8”3/4”1”1 1/4”1”1/4”End panel1/4” Overlay1” Overlay20”20”End panelConcealed HingeMeasure Guide for Cabinet Refacing21”1/2”1/2” OverlayFrameless cabinets are sometimes called full-overlay, orEuropean cabinets. The side walls are typically 5/8”, or 3/4”thick. Simply put, a frameless cabinet has no wood frameon the front of the cabinet. Door hinges are concealed andmounted to the inside of the cabinet wall. For 5/8” thick boxes, use a 1/2” overlay (add 1” to width and height). For 3/4” boxes, use 5/8” overlay (add 1 1/4” to width and height).Frameless cabinethinge overlay sizes4.22”20 1/2”Overlay(You’ll need to determine the overlay, and order the appropriate hinges.)20”Typical overlay is 1/2”There are two basic types ofcabinets: Framed, and Frameless. For framed cabinets, the standard“overlay” (size of frame that iscovered by the door or drawer front)is 1/2”. So the door size is 1” widerthan the opening width (1/2” oneach side), and 1” taller than theopening height.Frameless cabinets can bemeasured one of two ways; usingthe overlay method above, or bymeasuring the existing doors.Hinges are not one-size-fits-all! They are specificto the overlay, so you will need to specify theirsizes when ordering.Cabinet frame20”Framed cabinethinge overlay sizesAnother method is Opening Width (Overlay x 2).For the door height, use the same method; justbe sure the door will fit properly!Box Thickness5/8”3/4”Hinge Size1/2”5/8”1 1/4”22 1/2”1-1/4” Overlay20”20”5/8”3/4”21 1/4”21 1/2”5/8” Overlay3/4” OverlayMeasure Guide for Cabinet Refacing5.

Draw It OutDoor HingeBoringThe hinges used for our doors are aConcealed European style hinge.3 1/2”A 35mm recess is bored into theback of the door. The hinge is thenplaced into this recess, and securedwith screws.35mm3mmStandard boring location at the top of the door. The standard dimensions for thistype of boring is 3 1/2” from thetop or bottom of the door to thecenter of the bore hole. When using1/2” overlay, this would mean thatthe bore is 3” up or down from thecabinet opening. In most cases, you will use thisstandard. However, if you haveexisting pull out drawers or a LazySusan unit that may interfere with thehinge movement, you will need tomount the hinges higher up than thenstandard boring.Glass MullionsIf you are ordering multi “lite” glassdoors, known as mullions, be aware:Mullions may not line up with yourinterior shelves. If your shelves arenot adjustable, you may want toorder 1 lite glass doors.Standardboring3mmDoors 12 &13 bore up5 1/2” from bottom5 1/2”Custom boring location at the bottom of the door.If you are ordering new pull out drawers, you can make the drawersnarrow enough to avoid the hinge. In that case, you should just keepthe standard boring.MullionsShelves3612Ask any architect, carpenter, or designer, and they will probably tell you that it startswith a drawing. Sketch out your cabinetson a piece of paper, with pencil. It doesn’thave to be to scale, you just have to beaccurate. Use a clear ruler, or drawingtriangle, and a sturdy drawing surface. You just need enough details to completeyour order form with no mistakes. Usea simple 6 line, 2 dimensional drawing.Number your doors, and to avoidconfusion, letter your drawers.24122 345E: 12 x 322410B: 12 x 36E: 12 x 16B: 12 x 36E: 42 x 52AB6E: 24 x 83FFA7 89E: 24 x 35TK:4 x 963624As you move around the kitchen, measure from left to right, top to bottom. Jot down the sizes onto your drawing. Opencabinet doors, and measure the opening width, and height.Move all the way to the right, then proceed to the left of thebase cabinets. Open doors, and pull out drawers, if possible.Single Door,Double DoorSome cabinets have 1 door between 2 stiles; 1opening, 1 door. Others have 2 doors on a singleopening. For wood jobs, you will order sheetsof veneer for faces, and finished plywoodfor the rest. As a general rule, order 1 sheetof 25-1/4 x 96 veneer or laminate for every10 openings for faces. In addition to end panels, you can mountfalse doors to your cabinet ends, for anelegant touch. Measuring ForDoors AndDrawer FrontsThe order form is laid out in W x Hformat, so it is a good idea to measurethat way. To measure for doors, openthe cabinet door, and place yourtape measure as shown on left. (Theexample is a framed cabinet.) Forwidth, read the tape measure from theright edge of the left stile, to the leftedge of the right stile. Here, we have ameasurement of 16”.For height, read the tape measurefrom the bottom edge of the top rail, tothe top edge of the bottom rail. In theexample, we have 30-1/2”.Measuring ForDrawer BoxesRailStileTo determine drawer box width, subtract1” from the opening width. The drawerbox width will be ordered as 1” less thanthe opening size, and 2” less than thedrawer front.4 1/2”8.Measure Guide for Cabinet RefacingDrawer box19 3/4” L4”StileRailDeep style drawer boxIf opening width is 20”Measure the depth of your cabinets. (Besure to check for obstructions, such aswater or gas pipes, electrical boxes, icemaker water lines, etc.) Typical kitchencabinets are 24” and bath vanities 21”.Then drawer box is 19”RailIf you prefer deeper boxes, choose 19-3/4”lengths, and at least 1/2” less thanopening height. Thiswill give us a door size of 17” x 31-1/2”,with a left hinge bore.Measuring for drawer fronts is similarto measuring for doors. You shouldremove the drawer for this. Not onlywill it make it easier to measure, butyou also might see obstructions thatmay alter the size of your drawer boxes.(This does not apply if you will bereusing your existing drawer boxes.)Atleast1/2”Lengths:17 3/4”19 3/4”21 3/4”OtherHeights:3”3 1/2”4”4 1/2”5”6”5 1/2”8”9 1/2”10”Drawer box size options (all widths are to your order)DrawerSlide22”20”18”16”14”Drawer slide size options (includes mounting screws and boots)Measure Guide for Cabinet Refacing9.

End Panels, LaminateOr Veneer, Etc.Drawer BoxOrdersDrawer boxes come preassembledand can be ordered as finished 1/2”plywood with wood veneer edgeband,or solid 1/2” maple with dovetail joints.Note AboutPull OutsDon’t forget the toe kick!Pull out shelves are actually drawerboxes you mount inside a cabinet, behind one or more doors. Be sure tomake it easy to slide out. A good ruleis, subtract 1-1/2” for single door, and2” for double door pull outs. You can order them as deep as youcan, but the recommended size is21-3/4”L x 4” high. This will allow youto easily finish the front with laminateor veneer. Optionally, you can orderdrawer fronts for pull outs. (Make surethere is clearance!)In addition to doors, drawers, and fronts, you’llneed materials for finishing the sides and facesof the cabinets. You may also want to finish thebottoms of your wall, or upper cabinets, islandand peninsula backs, and so on. For laminates(also known as “PFL”), sheets come in a variety ofwidths, and can be used for end panels, bottoms, toe kicks, and faces. For wood jobs, 24 x 96sheets of veneer are ordered for the faces, andfinished plywood is used for the rest. For bestresults, order plywood 1” over, and trim to fit.Optional ItemsCorbels, valances, and lightrail can be added to your order. They will have a matching finish.Drawer Boxes - Specify DimensionsDepth Options:17 3/4” 19 3/4” 21 3/4”Height Options:3” 3 1/2” 4” 4 1/2” 5” 5 1/2” 6” 8” 9 1/2”Please order pull outs the samestyle as the other drawers.(Plywood, or Maple.)10.Measure Guide for Cabinet RefacingMeasure Guide for Cabinet Refacing11.
