The Ceremonial MaceThe mace was initially modeled after a twelfth century implement of war.Today it symbolizes the authority of the university to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Roane State Community College’s mace isused on ceremonial occasions in the life of the college. It is carried by the maceattendant during the academic procession, and has a prominent place on stage. The ceremonial mace and staff were handcrafted by local craftsman TroyHeaton for Roane State Community College in 2007. An enamel color-filledmedal of the college crest adds dimension to the walnut Roane State CommunityCollege mace. The college crest signifies the founding date of the flagshipcampus in 1971. Highlighting the walnut are polished gold plates inscribedwith the founding date of the Roane State Oak Ridge Campus and thefounding dates of each of Roane State’s Higher Education Centers. The Presidential Chain of OfficeA medallion or seal of office, worn by the head of an educational institution, isa practice that dates back to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was usedto mark documents as official. Wearing the seal eventually became a symbolof authority. For centuries, custom handcrafted Chains of Office have honoredthe highest officials of education with an instantly visual recognition of theauthority of office. Roane State Community College’s Chain of Office designedby the Medallic Art Company consists of a bronze medallion of the college crestsurrounded by a wreath. The chain contains small bronze plates inscribed withthe name of the current Roane State Community College president and also thepast presidents and their dates of service.PhotographsPhotographs of commencement are available through Graduation Images ofNashville.
