S2BIRMINGHAM BUSINESS JOURNALS3APRIL 26, 2019CIO OF THE YEAR AWARDSCIO OF THE YEAR AWARDSTwenty years of CIO successGLOBAL FINALISTSn 1998, when the first CIO of the Year ORBIE Award was presented, it was the products, notthe people, that were at the center of attention.Laptop of the Year, Printer of the Year and PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice awards were common, but itwas a start-up called Intellinet that noticed the realheroes were Chief Information Officers (CIOs) whoimplemented these products, developed solutionsand created business value for their organizations.Roll the clock ahead twenty years, and today,CIOs are at the center of business transformationfor all organizations. Technology is the engine thatdrives innovation and growth in every industryand sector in our global economy. It is the leaders who facilitate change by tech-enabling theirorganizations; these are the rock stars of businesstoday. The first CIO of the Year Awards was not onlya trailblazer for recognizing the people leadingtransformation, but eventually led to creating theGeorgia CIO Leadership Association (GeorgiaCIO)– a local, member-centric, professional organization dedicated to helping CIOs foster meaningfulrelationships, share best practices, solve problemsand achieve their leadership potential. In 2015, we launched BostonCIO and formedthe Inspire CIO Leadership Network (InspireCIO),a national professional association for CIOs nowwith local chapters in Georgia, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, Alabama, Charlotte, Houston, Minneapolis,LISA EVANSIOver 2 billion annual revenue & multinationalwill honor CIOs across five categories for leadership effectiveness and business value created through innovative use of technology. Finalists and winners are selected through a rigorous, independent judging process led by prior ORBIEwinners. The power of CIOs working together & collaborating – across public and private business, government, education, healthcare and nonprofit organizations – is incredible. Together, we are makinga difference transforming our organizations withtechnology and enriching Alabama and our world. The CIOs honored this year are inspiring andchallenge all of us to step up and lead well in ourorganizations. Although weare not a large department in the company, our impact over time has been significant, and as the companycontinues to move forward into the future, I believe we will become an increasingly important part of thatjourney.”SVP, CIO, MOTION INDUSTRIESKEVIN HICKSM.J. Harris ConstructionLARRY WATERSNat. Bank of CommerceSUCCESS STORY“My proudest accomplishment is creating a culture for Digital Transformation to be realized. Manufacturingdoesn’t lend itself to trial and error, or a fail fast culture like many technical companies today. Manufacturingfavors precision, predictability, and repeatability over innovation. Therefore, making this cultural shiftto “enable” and “empower” an organization to think outside of the box and try new things is a massiveundertaking. We are still on the journey, but the cultural changes have been made and we’re beginning tosee results. We are striving to see innovation born in Alabama, realized around the globe.”ELLEN HOLLADAYJAMIE ADAMSMsparkDONALD MARTINEnerSysEvans has been with MBUSI sincethe plant opened in 1995 and hasworked in IT roles for more than adecade, playing a pivotal role atone of central Alabama’s economicengines.Curt CarverCONGRATULATIONS 2019 ALABAMA CIO ORBIE NOMINEESMARK TRONCALEO’Neal SteelHEAD OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, MERCEDES BENZ US INTERNATIONALMICHAEL RINEHARTFox Rothschild LLPRICK RIOBOLIComcast CorporationHolladay has led the development ofMotion’s highly refined supply chaincapabilities, including an integrationplatform designed to address thecomplex requirements associated withbusiness-to-business transactions.MICHAEL VENNERAIndependence Blue CrossSUCCESS STORY“I was hired by Motion 28 years ago to develop our strategic operating platform and was promoted to CIO6 years later.
