CHARGE ONF A C U LT YP R O F I L EPETER DELFYETTLaser expert. Optics and photonics professor. When optics and photonics professor Peter Delfyett chose to focus on the field decadesago, he says he couldn’t have predicted how big it would become. Since joining UCF in1993, Delfyett has remained passionate about mentoring students into the next generationof scientists, and he’s even been named a Pegasus Professor — UCF’s highest honor. Withyears of industry experience at Bell Communications Research, more than 500 publicationsand numerous awards under his belt, he’s able to help students advance laser technologyto better this industry, as well as communications, medicine, defense and the many othersit intersects with.HOW DOES YOUR RESEARCH IMPACT THE WORLD?What I try to do is help create new types of lasers tomake the internet faster. By doing this, I can maketechnologies like cellphones, computers and laptopsmuch faster to enable new types of applications. This also helps make technology more affordableso people in economically depressed areas havethe opportunity to access the same resources asanyone else.WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH STUDENTS?2 01 9 – 2 02 0 U ND E R G R AD UATE AD M I SSI ON SWhen I’m working on research with students theanswers to the problems we’re trying to solvecannot be found in a book. I can provide guidanceon how to investigate the issue, and they are ableto collect data in the lab so we can collaborate andlearn from each other to create new knowledge.I love working with students because they havethis really vibrant energy and curiosity. It gives mea tremendous amount of pleasure to help guidetheir development as scientists. Plus, it keeps meenthusiastic about the field as well.WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A GOOD TEACHER?To teach well and to make a connection withstudents really does take time and effort. This isn’tjust preparing a lecture, going in front of the boardand regurgitating information because students canread their books for that. The point of teaching is tonot just try to teach the material, but to explain it ina way that makes it easier for students to absorb, retain and apply.Training students to learn how to think critically isprobably the most important thing that teachers do.It’s almost like parents seeing their child walk for thefirst time. When you see students come in and growinto accomplished scientists or engineers that goon to contribute meaningfully to the real world, it’samazing.WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT THE OPTICSAND PHOTONICS PROGRAM AT UCF?The program at UCF is one of the best in thecountry. You have an opportunity here to work withsome of the world’s most renowned scientists inoptics and lasers. You get to learn from them in theclassroom. You get to work with them directly in thelaboratory. The environment we have here is verymuch like a family. We really try to help each other.17
