Will this change affect another department? What about University College did you markGeneral Education? Course deletions: Is this course required inanother department’s program? Is this program online, face‐to‐face‐, or both?June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop42

Graduate courses cannot have undergraduate courses asprerequisites. Dual listed courses must include “Offeredconcurrently with .” in the course description Special Approvals can only be done on the Sectionlevel. If a new course make sure there isn’t already acourse number that exists for this course.June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop63

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016CIM SystemThings to look forPrograms Review your catalog page prior to submitting CCRs.o The catalog page is approved CCRs. Changes cannot be made withoutan administrator and/or special approval from the Provost. If updating the name of a program, make sure the updatedname is updated everywhere in the catalog including thecommon content portions of the catalog page.o This is the top portion of the catalog page that includes thedescription part of the program.o CCRs would need to be submitted to reflect the name change. Curriculum maps must be submitted for all new or modifiedprograms and certificatesJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop7Programs cont . If creating a new course for your program create the courseCCR first and then add it to your program CCR. If changing credit awarded or deleting any courses that arein your programs, this will have an affect on your totalprogram hours. When adding a new course to a program do not forget toaccount for the prerequisite of that course in your degreehours. Common Prerequisites cannot be changed without BOGapproval. If you are changing to an already approvedCommon Prerequisite track are we on that list?June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop84

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016What are Student Learning Outcomes?Statements that describe what students will beable to know, do, or value as a result of theireducational experienceWritten in language that clearly implies ameasurable student behavior or quality ofstudent work producedJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop11Program CCRs, ALCs, and ALPs must include SLOsaligned with each of the following domainsContentdiscipline knowledge and skillsCritical thinkinganalysis, synthesis, and creation of argumentsuse of evidence; problem solvingCommunicationspeaking; writingIntegrity/valuesacademic integrity;discipline‐specific ethical issuesProject managementself‐regulation; collaboration and team skillsJune 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop126

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Writing Program Level SLOsThink of two UWF graduatesfrom your department. One graduated with honors;the other did not. Both represent graduates ofyour discipline. What are the characteristics of student learning thatyou believe describe the skills and abilities of bothgraduates?June 14, 2016CCR Workshop13Requirements for certificate programs and stand‐aloneminors: Program‐level SLOs and a curriculum map 3‐5 SLOs for certificates and stand‐alone minors Stand‐alone minors are offered in departments that do notaward a major and must identify program SLOsMinors embedded in existing degree programs share SLOswith the degree programCertificate programs must identify the SLOs that make thecertificate different from simply earning a major or minor SLOs are not required for every domain forcertificates and stand‐alone minors Curriculum map aligning courses with program SLOsJune 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop147

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Write SMART Student Learning OutcomesS SpecificM MeasurableA Attainable / Appropriate for thecourse or program level (undergrad/grad)R Relevant / RealisticT Timely for the location of the coursein the curriculumJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop15June 14, 2016CCR Workshop16http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/8

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016SLOs describe learning that is appropriate forthe level of expertise expected of students at agiven level of studyLower Level Courses (1000 & 2000):SLOs describe knowledge, comprehension, andapplication; might include a few higher‐order skillsUpper Level Courses (3000 & 4000):Greater emphasis on SLOs that describe analysis, synthesis, and evaluation skillsHandout: Writing Measurable Learning OutcomesJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop19Graduate SLOs reflect the progressively more complexand rigorous expectations associated with graduate studyGraduate SLOs describe the knowledge and skillsrequired to engage in independent research andprofessional practice. Advanced content knowledge of the literatureof the discipline Cognitive skills required for ongoing studentengagement in research and/or appropriateprofessional practice and training experienceHandout: Graduate Level Student Learning OutcomesJune 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop2010

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Dual‐Listed courses:Graduate SLOs should describe appropriate expectationsfor learning for graduate students Identify progressively more complex and rigorous studentlearning outcomes for the award of graduate credit Identify additional content and assignments for studentsearning graduate credit that are distinct from those used forstudents earning undergraduate credit Required readings Content topics Assignments or experiential activities Describe evaluation methods for student work that reflecthigher expectations for cognitive mastery expected ofgraduate students (do not just assign a longer paper)June 14, 2016CCR Workshop21Questions a reviewer should askwhen evaluating SLOsAre the outcomes measurable?Do the collection of outcomes represent learning thatis appropriate for the course level? Even graduate level courses will require some SLOs writtenat Bloom’s levels of knowledge and understand whenstudents encounter new but complex disciplinary content Consider the difficulty and challenge posed by content aswell as the level of Bloom represented by the verbs whenyou evaluate the appropriateness of an SLO forundergraduate or graduate workJune 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop2211

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Problematic language in SLOs: Suggest editsWords that do not produce measurable SLOs: Know Understand Appreciate Demonstrate knowledgeThese are laudable learning goals, but how would a studentdemonstrate that these have occurred?Solution:Identify behaviors and activities that could be observed ormeasured.Describe the quality of products that will provide evidence oflearning on these outcomes.June 14, 2016CCR Workshop23How to edit an SLO to describemeasurable student behaviorOriginal SLO:Complete an in‐depth exploration of the literature on aproblem or topic in Discipline X.Evaluation:Exploration is not a measurable activity; butthe quality of the product of exploration is measurableEdit the SLO to describe the learning in measurable language:Write a paper based on an in‐depth exploration of theliterature.June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop2412

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016When should a CCR request articulationwith other departments?Similar or shared disciplinary contentCCRs for a course that is a prerequisite or depends on aprerequisite course offered by another department Service courses / minors General Studies courses Course contributes to a major or minor offered byanother department Minor is completed by many majors in another program Course or program has potential to affect enrollments incourses/programs offered by another department When in doubt, request articulationJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop25Curriculum Maps describe the structureand coherence of an academic programDescribe the contribution of each course to program‐level learning outcomes in the curriculum.Matrix Columns: Courses required to complete theprogram (Course number and name)Matrix Rows: Program‐level learning outcomes as theyappear on an ALC or ALPMatrix Cells: Critical learning activity, embeddedassessment, or expected level of learning in a coursethat aligns with and supports program SLOsJune 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop2613

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Certificate or Stand‐Alone MajorCurriculum Map ExampleJune 14, 2016CCR Workshop29Curriculum map as an assessment toolCCR Reviewers:Does the curriculum map describe a coherent curriculum? How does each proposed new course contribute tocurriculum goals (program SLOs)? Does every required course contribute to learningfor at least one program SLO? Do students get enough practice with a skill beforethey are expected to demonstrate mastery? Are there gaps? An SLO that no course supports? Are outcomes addressed in a logical order? Do some SLOs get covered more than others?June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop3015

CCR Submission WorkshopJune 14, 2016Interpreting patterns: Is the curriculum coherent?Rows shaded in yellow represent curriculum strengths.Circled areas identify gaps and problem areas.June 14, 2016CCR Workshop31Program CCRs must include a curriculum mapDepartments should upload Curriculum Maps tothe CIM system for the CCR review. After the CCR review is complete, ALC, ALP, andcurriculum map documents for approved programchanges will be posted on the CUTLA site.Departments should post links to thesedocuments on the department web site.Gabby Bustamante or Tristan Danner will send you informationabout how to create internal links from department web sites tothe CUTLA archive of ALCs, ALPs, and curriculum maps.June 14, 2016http://uwf.edu/offices/cutla/CCR Workshop3216
