Grantsare focused on meeting basic needs and enhancingan individual’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency withemphasis on older adults, the Jewish community, andour hometown communities of Maryland, NortheasternPennsylvania, and Hawaii.In the following pages, the Foundation has identifiedselected grants of 50,000 or more that wereapproved and distributed within Maryland during thepast three years. To date, the WeinbergFoundation has provided 4.4 million in grants to buildthe framework for this initiative that will create a modelof comprehensive care allowing more older adults to agewith dignity and independence. Launched Baltimore City’s Early Childhood Initiative andBetter Together, which seek to ensure children enterkindergarten healthy and ready to learn. Since 2011,the Weinberg Foundation has committed a total of 20million to increase access to early childhood educationin Maryland. Over the next three years, 4.6 million ofthese funds will enable an additional 650 children and900 families in Baltimore to receive high quality earlychildhood education and family support services by 2017. Promoted youth literacy by supporting new andrenovated libraries in Baltimore City Public Schools. TheFoundation has committed 10 million to create up to24 new libraries as part of the Baltimore Elementary andMiddle School Library Project. A total of nine Weinberglibraries are already open, as of September 2014, andserving more than 5,000 students. Maryland organizations with anannual budget under 3 million a year areeligible to apply for an initial grant of up to 50K for two years ( 100K total). Fundingfor additional years may be available. Inmost cases, it takes only 50 days to gofrom “Our application is enclosed” to“Your check is in the mail.”The MSGP program also includes theWeinberg Foundation hometowncommunity of Northeastern Pennsylvania.Since its inception in 2007, thisprogram has provided morethan 22million to hundredsof Maryland and NortheasternPennsylvania nonprofits.C - Capital Project O - General Operating Support2 Grants for Maryland (FYE 2013-2015)20152014VolumeVolume8 3million to support the renovation of Sarah’s Hope, the largestshelter for homeless families in Baltimore. The renovation willincrease the number of beds and includes an on-site earlychildhood education center for children ages birth to three.The Foundation also has awarded a grant of nearly 1.5 millionover three years to St. Vincent de Paul to expand rapid rehousing for homeless families in Baltimore City. Helped to expand critical services for children with disabilitiesby awarding an 8 million grant to support the extensionof Kennedy Krieger Institute’s existing Weinberg OutpatientCenter in Baltimore. As part of its portfolio of 300 activegrantees in the disabilities field in the US and Israel, theFoundation funds programs that help people with physical,sensory, and intellectual disabilities, including autism and thosewho struggle with psychiatric difficulties. Of all these grantees,Kennedy Krieger serves the largest number of children at theearliest possible age. Equipped people to achieve economic self-sufficiency byfunding programs that provide the tools to obtain and keepemployment and progress on a career track. One example isthe Center for Urban Families in Baltimore, which providesemployment training through the STRIVE model, and otherprograms, to low-income individuals so that they may achievestability and economic success. Strengthened our hometowns through grants to umbrellaorganizations that distribute funds for direct services withinthe Foundation’s priority areas. These organizations includeAssociated Black Charities, Associated Catholic Charities, Inc.,The ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore,and The United Way of Central Maryland, Inc.
