The LVN to RN Associate in Science Degree programis aligned with the core values of Madera Community College. The nursing program values thediverse cultures, ethnicities, and socio-economic qualities of each student, and believe thatnursing education supports each student to reach their maximum potential as an individual, professional nurse, and community member. The educational program is challenging, broad inscope, and flexible to meet individual needs, with general education courses that precede oraccompany nursing education courses. The faculty believes that education is a guided process that results in behavioral changes reflectingthe learner's growth. Learning is facilitated in an environment where the student feels acceptedand valued as an individual with varying needs, abilities, skills, past experiences, and goals. Thefaculty participates in the learning process by providing guidance, encouraging the student towardself-direction, and sharing with the student the responsibility of evaluating his/her experiences. The faculty believes that learning progresses from simple to complex and should actively involvethe learner and address the student's various learning styles. It is most effective when it is selfdirected, and the student perceives experiences as meaningful. The best opportunities forpractical learning include acute care, clinic settings, and community outreach. The varied settingsoffer the student exposure to various experiences under the guidance of knowledgeable andcaring faculty. These experiences will build on the LVN’s knowledge and skills as they progresstoward the RN's advanced educational level. The philosophy of the Madera Community College, LVN to RN Associate in Science Degree Nursingprogram is based on the following concepts:Person: The concept of person refers to individual open systems with physiological, psychological, social, cultural, developmental, and spiritual dimensions that are in constant interaction with theenvironment.Environment: The concept of environment refers to the internal and external factors that impactthe person. The internal factors consist of cognitive, developmental, physiological, andpsychological processes, while the external environment consists of the physical and social world.

4Health: The concept of health is regarded as a state of optimal physical, mental, social, andspiritual well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (World Health Organization,2019). It exists on a continuum between optimal functioning or wellness and alterations infunctioning or illness. Health is affected by lifestyle behaviors, choices, and stressors.Nursing: Nursing is a profession that promotes and teaches the person to manage and provide fortheir health care needs. It facilitates health by supporting opportunities for the person to achieveoptimal health/wellness. The purpose of nursing is to assist the person in maintaining health, preventing or minimizing disease and disability, rehabilitating and restoring wellness, andproviding comfort and dignity in death. Nurses collaborate with health team members andrespond to the care of patients across the life cycle based on physiological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual needs.Education: Education is an ongoing process involving the active participation of both the studentand the instructor. It is facilitated by communication between the faculty and students in atraditional and technologically enhanced learning environment. Nursing education is best acquiredin a collegiate setting where upward career mobility and educational preparation have a dynamicrelationship. The collegiate setting allows students nurses to exchange ideas and experiences withstudents and faculty of other disciplines, thereby providing the student with a global nursingapproach. This broad-based education assists the student nurses to integrate communication arts, information technology, and the social and biological sciences, which provide the foundation forlearning the art and science of nursing. It provides students from varied ethnic and culturalbackgrounds with the knowledge and skills necessary to assume the role of a caring and culturallysensitive professional nurse.Nursing education provides a comprehensive knowledge base that enables the student to keepabreast of the rapidly changing and expanding body of nursing science. The clinical laboratory is anintegral component of nursing education. It is the environment where the student builds upon atheoretical foundation while exploring ethical and cultural values based on a curriculum thatfocuses on client-centered care, evidence-based practice, cultural diversity, and integratesknowledge of nursing with other disciplines. A caring environment enhances learning, promotesself-efficacy, and enables students to graduate successfully from the nursing program.Teaching/Learning: Teaching/Learning is defined as the right and responsibility of nurse educatorsto utilize sound educational practices and theoretical concepts to present knowledge and promoteskills that reflect current healthcare practices. The teacher acts as a guide, facilitator, and rolemodel to help students reach their full potential. Teaching also involves supporting and mentoringthe student to develop an attitude of respect, caring, and dignity toward self and others. Theteaching/learning process begins with recognizing the individual’s abilities and life experiences, which each learner brings to the educational setting. The faculty strives to help the learnerbecome increasingly self-directed to provide a foundation for life-long learning.Students: Students are encouraged to become self-motivated, independent critical thinkers whoaccept personal accountability and responsibility in the learning process. It is essential thatstudents entering an LVN to RN nursing program have the basic reading, math, and language skills

5needed to succeed. Cognitive skills essential to the learning process in nursing education includeanalysis, synthesis, application, and evaluation (Bloom’s Taxonomy, 1956).Nursing Faculty Members: While learning is the student's responsibility, learning is enhancedwhen they are active participants with the faculty in the educational process.
