June 2016 NewsletterCEO Message:We celebrated 30 years all year as we just closed our fiscal year on May 31. Looking ahead to the futureof STRIDE as a sustainable entity has a big newsflash in the near future. We have completed oursuccession plan (no worries no plans to retire for at least 5 years!) But I’m confident I will be leavingSTRIDE in capable and dedicated leaders hands, who will take STRIDE even farther than I could dream. Iam proud of where we’ve come and see the next few years as transition to even bigger dreams. Ourstrategic plan is leading us to a headquarters building and in the near future to continue STRIDE’sdevelopment.Warrior trip to NYCA select small group of alumni Wounded Warriors were treated to a wonderful excursion trip to NYC for3 days in May from our partner organization DSUSA to represent the STRIDE chapter for their annualsponsor dinner at the Plaza hotel. The group visited Ground zero withan exclusive trip to the top ofFreedom Tower and museum.; and a harbor tour with NYPD and NYFD.

Brand New Hiking program!You asked for it.we did it! Spring hiking was instituted as a pilot program, and very successfuloutcome! Thanks to the volunteer efforts of Director, Elizabeth Gross and her team of ski instructorfriends , we successfully hiked 5 different trails around the capital district. Each of the athletes wereissued pedometers and taught about the benefits of walking.Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation Partners with STRIDEEmployees of Empire Blue joined forces with STRIDE to open SCORE with a clean-up day, as part of theirFoundation grant to STRIDE for 25K and their ‘Dollars for Doers’ program. Twenty employees spent aday at SCORE setting tents, cleaning the lodge and getting the winter blues brushed away in order tohost our fun summer events!

STRIDE Adaptive Sports Summer Camping – Sign up Now!STRIDE offers weekend themed tent-camping for youth with disabilities located at our 85 acre STRIDECenter for Outdoor Recreation & Education Center (SCORE) in Chatham NY. Youth are paired with radult counselors in a one-to-one mentor situation. Volunteers and campers are provided witheverything they need including tents, sleeping bags, cots and lots of great food. Central lodge providesactivity center; fishing pond; accessible hiking trails and completion archery range are all part of thisexclusive camp for adaptive programs.June 17th – 19th Woodworking Camp! Northeast Woodworkers Assn, featuring woodworking basicsand projects!June 24th-25th – Archery invitational! With Air Force Warrior Coach TSGT Tim McDonoughJuly 8th – 10th Autism weekend for youth with ASD diagnosis ! Theater trip!July 22th – 24th Nature and Birds of Prey Weekend! CollegePark Hall hosted the largest group of over 50 STRIDE youth on May 16th by our friends – the UnionCollege Women’s Hockey Team!Strides 4 STRIDE 7th Annual 5K Run Walk roll – June 11

The spirit of the Olympics rolls into Albany again at the Corning Preserve for our 5K Run & 2KWalk combined event in celebration of Olympic Day on Saturday, June 11 at 9am at theAmpitheatre on a fast, flat course along the riverfront. The certified course and chip timing isprovided by ARE Event Productions, followed by a 2K community walk to promote healthy,active lifestyles, regardless of disability. Activities will include a 400-meter tot run ( 5 yrs.), giveaways/food, raffle, clowns, team prizes and more! Mark your calendar for June 27th- July 1st as the ‘I Can Shine’ Bicycle Campreturns this summer to the Achilles Rink at Union College! Now in our 9th year, STRIDE is partneringagain with Albany Chapter of Autism Society to offer this specialized program to teach kids how to ridea bike in one short week! Presented by “I Can Shine”, traveling bike trainers with a fleet of adaptivebikes specifically designed to ensure success.
