In May of 2020, I plan ongraduating with my BS in Special Education with anemphasis in Severe Disabilities. I have loved everyminute here at the University and I am excited forwhat my future holds after I graduate. I am currentlya para-educator at Granite Elementary School intheir Extended Core department. I knew later in my undergraduate career that Iwanted to be a Sport Psychologist, but did not have anunderstanding, nor the academic self-efficacy, of whatit would take to reach these goals. So, I turned my focusto youth development and began working for the Boys& Girls Clubs of America, where I could utilize myacademic background in an active, challenging,enriching environment. I graduated from Ball StateUniversity (Muncie, Indiana) in 2017 with master’sdegrees in Sport & Exercise Psychology and ClinicalMental Health Counseling, and now see myself eye toeye with my academic and career ambitions I set outsome ten years ago. Olivia BreedMary Elizabeth Baum Hanks Endowed ScholarshipI am from a small town called Gig Harbor. I grew upwith my two younger brothers and my parents. I loveto read, hike, travel, cook, and of course hang outwith my friends. I started my college experience hereat the U in pursuit of ballet. After a year, I decided Iwanted to pursue elementary education. Iwholeheartedly believe education is an investmentthat cannot be taken away. I have had theopportunity to work with a vast range of students,and it has only deepened my passion andpersistence for helping them obtain highereducation. In the fall, I will be student teaching in a2nd grade classroom in Salt Lake School District. I amvery excited for this final step in obtaining myundergraduate degree. Jennifer CallMolly Lawson Research FellowshipI am from Rexburg, Idaho. I am currently working on myPhD in special education and plan to graduate in 2019.Before I moved to Utah, I was teaching specialeducation preschool in Boise, Idaho working withstudents with mild to moderate disabilities. I’ve alsotaught first and second grade in Idaho and Utah. Imoved to Utah three years ago to be closer to my familyand found out about this program at the U from a coworker who is also now in the program. My educationalgoals at the University of Utah are to become anindependent scholar and produce original researchwhich positively contributes to the field of specialeducation. My dissertation will focus on teachingparents to implement a reading intervention calledDialogic Reading with their preschool children withdisabilities. Once I graduate, I hope to work at anInstitution of Higher Education in teacher education withpreservice teachers in order to help prepare the nextgeneration of early childhood special educators.ProgramSpecial Education

My currentassignment as a 7th grade College and CareerAwareness teacher has been a highlight of mycareer. It has afforded me the chance to witnessand be a part of an amazing time in so manyindividuals’ lives. Self-awareness is developing and itis fragile and resilient at the same time. Thequestion, “How do you work with this age group?”has been posed to me many times. CastrellónSteffensen Cannon ScholarshipAs the first in my family to attend and graduate college, I have asincere commitment to educational equity and the retentionand persistence of students of color in higher education. Sincemy undergraduate work at California State University, MontereyBay until now, as a PhD candidate in the Department ofEducational Leadership and Policy (ELP), I have dedicated mywork to understanding the educational and political contexts forundocumented students and Latina/o/x students in p-16. Afterbeginning the program here at The University of Utah and agraduate assistantship working directly with first generationcollege students of color, I knew I was where I needed to be andI could not stop at a master’s degree. Through my livedexperiences as a first generation Latina college student, and theexperiences of the undergraduate students I work with, I amcontinuously reminded of the changes that need to happen inhigher education for more equitable educational outcomes forhistorically marginalized students. It is for these reasons that I ampursuing entering the professoriate and educational researchfields. My hope is to teach and conduct research in the field ofeducation, with an emphasis on critical policy analysis,examining how policies effect undocumented students andstudents of color, as well as influence critical service-learning.ProgramEducational Leadership and Policy

Cambria CorsiGrayson and Seth Jenson Memorial ScholarshipThe education provided by the University of UtahEducational Psychology program will help me acquirethe knowledge and training necessary to succeed inmy future school psychology career. Through thiscareer, I hope to work primarily in schools and to ensurethat individualized and effective evidence-basedpractices are being provided to children. Specifically, Iwould like to work with children who have received adiagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as,children who exhibit externalizing behaviors, evaluatingand potentially improving interventions for theseindividuals. He was born inProvo, Utah, and was raised in part in Lehi beforemoving with his family to Salt Lake City. Hegraduated from East High School in 2013, whereafter he promptly enrolled in the University of Utah.His first year at the university, he explored options inengineering. However, after taking a deferral of twoyears, he found a passion for teaching. Combiningthis with his affinity for mathematics, he decided topursue a degree in Math Teaching within thedepartments of math and education, as well asreceiving his teaching license through the UITE. My teaching career began as a para-educator while Iwas working towards my license. After a year in this position,I moved into a high school setting as a special educationteacher. My role in this position was to not only educatestudents with disabilities on core curriculum, but to teachself-advocacy and life skills. In order to improve myadvocacy for people with disabilities, I have volunteeredwith Special Olympics for 8 years. Through my experiencewith Special Olympics, I have been able to educate theathletes in many things above and beyond the sport. The drive to school was30 minutes each way, but I loved the long rides. I lovedevery minute of preparing for a day of learning. In fact,out of the seven siblings, I think I’m the only one whoreally loved school. I wanted to be a teacher because Isaw the value in helping students grow and learn and Icould grow and learn with them. I finished school whileworking full-time, being a mother, got married, andmoved to Utah. Kevin GreenbergSteffensen Cannon ScholarshipKevin is a doctoral student at the University of Utah.His research pertains to learning and cognition, withthe focus of cognitive load theory, reasoning, andworking memory in STEM education.
