UW HEALTH NEUROLOGYMissionThe Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin provides state-of-the-art, compassionate care for people withdiseases of the nervous system locally, regionally and nationally; conducts research in basic and clinical neuroscience; and offersmedical students, residents and fellows intensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.VisionThe Department of Neurology will achieve excellence in its missions of clinical service, teaching andresearch by promoting a climate of teamwork, collaboration and collegiality among faculty neurologists,neuropsychologists, scientists, staff and interdisciplinary colleagues.OverviewThe faculty and academic staff of the department are engaged in a broad range of clinical and academic activities. Neurology facultyand academic staff include neurologists, neuropsychologists and scientists who are engaged in basic and clinical research, andalso contribute to educational programs of the department. There are more than 25 trainees in a variety of residency, fellowship andpostdoctoral programs.The Neurology Department consists of 33 adult neurologists, three pediatric neurologists, three adult neuropsychologists, two pediatricneuropsychologists, five basic science faculty and more than 70 staff including researchers, research staff, fellows, residents, nursepractitioners, physician assistants, nurses, clinical and research support staff.The department has 12 residents (three per year) and offers clinical fellowships in neurophysiology, epilepsy, pediatrics, strokeand neuropsychology.HistoryThe Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health evolved from the Department ofNeuropsychiatry, which was established in 1925. In 1956, the Department of Neuropsychiatry was divided into the Department ofPsychiatry and the Department of Neurology.The department has not only had significant contributions to the clinical care of neurological patients but also a major impact on thetraining of neurologists and neuropsychologists. Pioneering medical and scientific discoveries have been part of our history from thebeginning and continue to be a focus. The department also played a large role in the development of neurology and neuropsychiatryas a professional medical discipline.Important developments from our past include: “Chun” gun hydrocephalus detection device First EEG video documentation of reflex epilepsy Discovery of mossy fiber sprouting in epilepsy Seminal observations about the damage of poorly controlled seizures M ultidisciplinary Stroke Program, which was the sixth facility in the nation to receiveComprehensive Stroke Center recognition from the Joint Commission, and first in Wisconsin In 2015, ranked 29th by U.S. News and World ReportWe are also proud of our history of distinguished training programs, and count Dr. Frances Forster(one of the founders of the American Academy of Neurology) as one of our own.DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY I OCTOBER 2015 REVIEW1

ServicesThe Neurology Department has neurology clinical programs in the areas of general adult and pediatric neurology and diversesubspecialty areas. TelestrokeUW Health Telestroke started in 2009 as the first telestroke program in Wisconsin. It now connects seven regional emergencydepartments in the surrounding ring markets. Our Provider Relations Coordinator is a hospital-based advocate for referring providers, their staff, referral coordinators, andhealth plan staff. The team also consists of four Physician Liaisons who assist with relationship-building activities, such as UW healthphysician visits to to community physician offices or CME presentations. In 2013 there were over thirty such events for the UW Healthneurologists and neurosurgeons in Dubuque, Fond du Lac, Wausau, Neenah, Appleton, Beaver Dam, Stevens Point, Rockford, Freeport,Monroe, Oshkosh, Mauston, Portage, Minocqua, Appleton, Wisconsin Dells, Reedsburg and Fort Atkinson.Support groups and community education activities Moving Forward–Learning More about Movement Disorders: Public seminars with movement disorders topics Understanding Stroke: Stroke awareness talk for public Life After Stroke: Seminar for stroke patients and families Stroke Camp: Three-day event for survivors and families Monthly Brain Tumor Support Group Brain Aneurysm and Stroke Support Group (Fresh Start) Stroke Night: Educational events for EMSResearch: Clinical studies and grantsDuring FY2014, a total of 14 grants were awarded in the Deaprtment of Neurology.
