In the BeginningOver 100 YearsChena Hot Springs became famous for curingcrippled prospectors oftheir aches and pains aslong ago as 1905. Robertand Thomas Swan hadlearned that a 1904 U.S.Geological Survey crewhad seen steam risingfrom a valley somewhereon the upper Chena River. The surveyors concludedthat it had been from ahot springs, but did notinvestigate. Robert Swan, looking for a place wherehe could ease the pain hesuffered from rheumatism, set out in search of the hotsprings. Over one monthlater the two brothersfound themselves at theNorth Fork of the Chenaand had to pole theirway up that tributary tothe mouth of MonumentCreek. A short while laterthey found the hot springson August 5, 1905.By 1911, the propertyboasted a stable, bathhouse and twelve smallvisitor cabins. The resortwas on its way to becoming one of the premierresorts of Interior Alaska, and a favorite getawayspot for world-weary residents of Fairbanks. As the fame spread, Alaska’s delegate to Congress,James Wickersham, askedthe Department of Agriculture to analyze the waters. The Bureau of Chemistrysaid that the water was“different from any American hot springs which wehave examined.”The principal characteristics of the Chena HotSpring waters consistsof its content of sulfate, chloride and bicarbonate of sodium. In fact, it isvery similar to the watersof Felsenquelle, one of thefamous springs at Carlsbad in Bohemia. To this very day, ChenaHot Springs Resort boastsa healthy and beautifulnatural environment, continuing to welcome peoplefrom all over the world tobathe in the curative powers of its hot waters.Served 11:30 am until 10:00 pmAppetizersChena WingsTen crisp fried chicken wings with your choice of hot sauce, barbecue sauceor sweet and sour sauce. This400-kilowatt geothermalelectric system providesa clean renewable energy that puts no harmfulemissions into the air.Geothermal plants operate reliably a higher percentage of time than coal, natural gas or nuclearpower plants. This technology can be applied tosome of the nearly 150other hot springs and volcanic areas of Alaska.Twenty percent of theelectricity in Iceland isproduced geothermallyand 80% from hydrogen.Much has been learnedfrom our northern neighbors. Eventually we hopeto produce hydrogen thatcan be used to operate our equipment andvehicles.Alaskan HalibutLightly blackened and served over rice with our fresh seasonal vegetable29.95Wild Alaskan SalmonFresh salmon grilled and served with our soft polenta and seasonal vegetabletopped with shrimp sauce26.50Wild Alaska ScallopsAlso known as Weathervane Scallops, Alaska scallops harvested in theGulf of Alaska, immediately hand-shucked and frozen at sea, are knownfor their large size and sweet flavor.
