BERNARD O’CONNOR, OSFSUniversity PresidentDEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICSSTAFF DIRECTORYFather Bernard O'Connor was appointed the thirdPresident of DeSales University in April of 1999,and started his tenure on July 1, 1999.Fr. O'Connor was previously executive vicepresident of the University from 1997 to 1998. Healso served as associate vice president for academicaffairs from 1993 to 1994 and academic dean from1994 to 1997.In 1974, Fr. O'Connor joined the faculty of DeSales University, formerly Allentown College ofSt. Francis de Sales, as an instructor in philosophy.He served as assistant professor of philosophy andchair of the philosophy department from 1980 through 1987, at which time he wasnamed associate professor and chair of the philosophy and theology departments. In1990, he received the Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and CampusLeadership Award.Prior to joining the faculty of DeSales University, he earned his bachelor's andmaster's degrees in philosophy at The Catholic University in 1969 and 1971, respectively. He earned a second master's degree in theology from the DeSales Hall Schoolof Theology in 1974, and in 1986, he completed his doctorate in philosophy from TheCatholic University.In 1982, he was elected to the 15th General Chapter of the Oblates of St. Francisde Sales, Paderborn, Germany. He is the author of "A Dialogue Between Philosophyand Religion: The Perspective of Karl Jaspers." Fr. O'Connor is a member of theAmerican Philosophical Association, the American Catholic Philosophical Association, the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, and has served on the board of directorsfor Lehigh Valley Industrial Park since 2001.SCOTT COVALDirector of AthleticsScott Coval enters his ninth year as DeSales University Director of Athletics. Coval is responsible forthe planning, organization, management and evaluation of DeSales 16-sport men's and women's NCAADivision III intercollegiate athletics program.Coval has been with the University for the last15 years as the head men's basketball coach. Sincejoining the DSU staff, Coval has also served as theschool's coordinator of athletic recruiting, head men'sgolf coach, and as the assistant athletic director.Since taking over the men's basketball program atDeSales, Coval has compiled a 256-144 (.640) recordand has led the team to the post-season 13 of his 15 years including the program'sfirst-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 1995-96.Prior to arriving in Center Valley, Coval was an assistant coach at Lafayette Collegefor five years. He has also been an assistant at Penn State University and the Collegeof William & Mary. A standout player at Whitehall High School, Coval continued hisplaying career at William & Mary, where he was named team captain and MVP hissenior year. DeSales UniversityDeSales University is a private, coeducational, mid-size, Catholic university located on a beautiful 400-acrecampus in Center Valley, Pa., just minutes south of the metropolitan Allentown/Bethlehem area, and north ofcharming Bucks County. HEAD COACH SCOTT COVALSCOTT COVAL’S CAREERScott CovalCOACHING RECORDHead CoachCollege of William & Mary (‘86)YearsScott Coval enters his 16th season as thehead coach at DeSales University. Coval,the all-time winningest men’s basketballcoach in DSU history, boasts a 256-144(.640) overall record.Under Coval’s guidance the Bulldogshave qualified for the postseason 13 ofhis 15 years on the sideline. His team’spostseason list includes the 1995-96NCAA Division III Tournament and the ECAC South Region Tournamentin 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 including anECAC South Region Tournament championship in 2007. Coval has beennamed Freedom Conference Coach of the Year three times (2003, 2004,and 2008).In 15 years with the Bulldogs, Coval’s teams have had a .500 or betterrecord 14 times. Over the last six years, DSU has played in four FreedomConference title games, been to five ECAC South Region Tournaments,won one ECAC South Region Tournament Championship and compiled a126-44 (.741) overall record. In 2003-04 the Bulldogs set a school-recordwith 24 wins, 13 consecutive wins and 20-straight wins at home. DSUwas ranked as high as #17 in the country during that year.His on-court philosophy ofteam play and hard work haspaved the way for Coval’ssuccess. His teams rely onan up-tempo offense with anemphasis on sharing the ball.The Bulldogs also achievein the classroom. Coval hascoached 34 players who havebeen named to the MASCACAcademic Honor Roll andevery four-year player (100%)has graduated from DeSaleswith a degree.Prior to arriving in CenterValley, Coval was an assistant coach at Lafayette College for five years.He has also been an assistant at Penn State University and the College ofWilliam & Mary. Coval was a standout player at Whitehall High Schoolwhere he was named 1st-Team All-State his senior year, led the team to the1982 state championship, and scored over 1,800 points in his career. Hecontinued his playing career at Division I William & Mary, where he wasnamed team captain and MVP his senior year. ASSISTANT COACHESMatt HunterJeff SilkSalisbury University (‘05)West Chester University (‘75)Matt Hunter joins Coach Coval’sstaff for his first season as the fulltime assistant coach for the men’sbasketball team arriving from TheCollege of New Jersey where hespent two seasons as an assistantcoach before being named the interim head coach for the 2007-08season.Hunter, a native of Plainsboro, NJ, graduated from SalisburyUniversity in 2005 where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physicaleducation. He participated on the basketball team at SU, beingnamed a team captain both his junior and senior season and earninga spot on the All-Conference Academic Team three times duringhis career with the Seagulls.Hunter has also worked several camps since his graduation fromSalisbury including ones at Notre Dame University, West VirginiaUniversity, Rider University, Salisbury University, The Collegeof New Jersey, and the Hoop Group Elite/Eastern Invitational.Coach Silk enters his 33rd season coachingboy’s and men’s basketball and his ninth yearat DeSales University.He hails from Central Bucks East HighSchool where he coached for 22 years (19792000). He was an assistant coach at CB Eastfor the first 12 years of his tenure and waspromoted to head coach for his last 10 years.While a head coach at CB East, Silk led theteam to eight winning seasons, one SuburbanOne League Championship, five second placefinishes, and helped East qualify for the District I Tournament nine times.In addition to coaching at CB East, Silk served as coach of the freshmanmen’s basketball team and an assistant coach with the varsity team at WestChester University from 1974-76. Silk’s playing days were also at WestChester University where he played point guard for the Golden Rams. He wasalso an All-League soccer and basketball player at CB East before college.He graduated from WCU in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree inSecondary Education-Social Studies. Silk was hired as a Social Studies teacherin the Quakertown Community School District following graduation and hastaught at QCHS for the last 30 years, while earning a Masters EquivalencyDegree along the way.Silk, who will primarily help with the development of the guards at DeSalesUniversity, resides in Buckingham, PA, with his wife, Mary Jane. 2007-08 MEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEWThe 2008-09 DeSales men’s basketball team begins the seasonwith a strong core of returning players. Last season, the Bulldogsfinished with a 21-6 overal record, won the Freedom Conferenceregular season championship, advanced to the championship gameof the Freedom Conference playoffs, and finished the year rankedfourth in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings.This pre-season, DeSales was picked second in the pre-seasonpoll with a total of 64 points and two first-place votes. WilkesUniversity, the team the Bulldogs eliminated from the playoffs lastseason, was named thepre-season favorite with 2008-09 Freedom ConferencePre-Season Poll72 points and the otherseven first-place votes.Head Coach Scott 1. He averaged 4.7 boards per game and shot 36.9 percent fromthree-point land.Expected to join him in the starting lineup in the back court issophomore Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) as a transferfrom Lehigh University. Hunter appeared in just eight games withthe Mountain Hawks but had a standout high school career thatincluded him being named the Morning Call Player of the Year asa senior at Emmaus HS.The second wing guard position is up for grabs as the pre-seasoncomes to an end with juniors Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) and Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) the most likely candidates to fill the spot. Malatesta isa defensive stalwart who started 17 games last year and averaged4.9 points per game, while Schubach is a terrific shooter and scoreron the offensive end who averaged 3.2 points per game in limitedaction as a sophomore.Off the bench several players will have the opportunity to play keyroles throughout the season.
