IntroductionThe lure of the unknown and the lore of hidden things have long in trigued the human mind. Along with such skills as throwing rocks andfashioning flintstone spearheads, primitive man developed more subtlecrafts, as foretelling the weather by the ways the birds Hew or thewinds blew. From those beginnings came modern sciences like ballisticsand meteorology; and the same applies in many other instances. Two factors were present in most primitive sciences; the psychic andthe occult. The practitioner of a craft usually claimed and often be lieved that he possessed a special faculty not given to ordinary mortals, enabling him to gain unique results and issue reliable forecasts. Hebacked this by professing knowledge of secret subjects which he waspledged not to reveal. This combination of psychic power and occult learning has persistedinto modern times. Skilled artists often regard their work as "inspired"or rely on "trade secrets" for results. So the pattern is similar, eventhough many things that once created awe and wonderment are ex plainable by modern science. Now the cycle may be bringing us to newwonders, perhaps including some revivals from the past. The science of alchemy, which flourished in the Middle Ages, hasbeen styled the "father of chemistry," and it is interesting to note thatthe efforts of the alchemists to transmute one metal into another havebeen realized in our modern laboratories, though not as the alchemistsanticipated. But that should not reflect too greatly on alchemy, for ac cording to some authorities, it was not the alchemists, but their imita tors, who stumbled upon the more important discoveries that foundedmodern chemistry.Similarly, astrology, as the forerunner of astronomy, may have had itsfaults. But any absurdities of astrologers were outmatched by the er roneous theories held by astronomers, until the invention of the tele scope proved that they were wrong.

xivThis is not a defense of outmoded beliefs founded on ignorance andsuperstition. It is all the more reason why such notions should be dis carded, as they often have been. But theories that have an intelligentbasis, those that have stood the test of time and gained popular accept ance, were and are worthy of continued consideration. Had they notbeen, chemistry, astronomy, and other modem sciences would havedied in infancy, whenever some new finding disproved the old. There is such a thing as being both right and wrong. Columbusproved that when he sailed westward and thought he had discoveredthe East Indies, but blundered into America instead. Today, the Carib bean islands are called the West Indies, which is a classic misnomer. But nobody doubts their existence. As to psychic and occult sciences, those that have won continuedinterest are worthy of consideration, as astrology or numerology. So arethose that have sprung to public acceptance, as graphology and physi ognomy, which are newer than some of our standard sciences. All thesehave been included in this volume because of their own merits. But always, we have followed this purpose:Each psychic or occult science is treated as it stands today, in the lightof modem knowledge and interest. All have been simplified and u dated for the reader's convenience. These constitute the great portionof this volume, but as preliminary, we have cataloged an array of an cient psychic and occult sciences as well as modem:Aeromancy, or divination from the air and sky, goes beyond the rangeof weather prognostications and concentrates more upon cloud shapes, comets, spectral formations, or other phenomena not normally visiblein the heavens. Even in modem times, such visions have caused specu lation and consternation among viewers.Alchemy is the science of transmuting base metals into gold or silverwith the aid of a mysterious substance termed the "philosopher's stone."Alchemists also claimed to prolong human life indefinitely by means ofa secret elixir.Alectryomancy is a form of divination whereby a bird, usually ablack hen or a white gamecock, is allowed to pick grains of com froma circle of letters, thus forming words or names with prophetic signifi cance. Another method is to recite the letters of the alphabet, notingthose at which a cock crows.Aleuromancy requires slips with answers to questions. These arerolled in balls of dough, which are baked, then mixed. One is chosen at

XVrandom and presumably will be fulfilled. Modem "fortune cookies" area survival of this ancient ritual.Alomancy, or divination by salt, accounts for some of our modemsuperstitions; so does Alphitomancy, which utilizes special cakes thatare digestible by persons with a clear conscience, but are distasteful toothers; while Anthropamancy is an ancient and long-outlawed form ofhuman sacrifice.Apantomancy covers forecasts from chance meetings with animals, birds, and other creatures, which can be updated to include modemomens of the "black cat" variety. A classic case was the founding ofMexico City on the spot where Aztec soothsayers saw an eagle Hyingfrom a cactus, carrying a live snake; this represents the Mexican coat-of arms today.Arithmancy or Arithmomancy is the ancient form of Numerology andapplies chiefly to divination through numbers and letter values, as dis cussed in the section on Numerology. Astraglomancy or Astragyro mancy was worked with crude dice bearing letters and later numbers;this, too, has developed into a modem diversion, detailed under FortuneTelling by Dice.Astrology, as the ancient science of the stars, was basically a form ofdivination, as persons who could foretell changes in the heavens natu rally felt capable of predicting the smaller affairs of mankind. Modemastrology makes no such extravagant claims, but has retained enough ofthe old tradition to become a fascinating subject in its own right, and itis so treated in this volume.Augury is the general art of divination, covering many forms in cluded in this list, and applying chiefly to interpretations of the futurebased on signs and omens.Austromancy refers to divination by a study of the winds. Axiomancyrequires an ax or hatchet, which answers questions by its quivers whendriven into a post, or points out the direction taken by robbers or othermiscreants, according to the way the handle falls.Belomancy, one of the most ancient types of divination, required thetossing or balancing of arrows. Bibliomancy involves divination bybooks; while Botanomancy requires the burning of tree branches andleaves to gain desired answers. Bumpology is a strictly modern term, apopular nickname for Phrenology.Capnomancy is the study of smoke rising from a fire and is performedin varied ways. Cartomancy is fortune telling with cards, covered spe cially under that heading, with a discussion of modern methods. Catop-

.xvitromancy was an early form of crystal gazing, utilizing a mirror thatwas turned to the moon to catch the lunar rays.Causimomancy involves divination from objects placed in a fire. Ifthey fail to ignite, or bum more slowly than anticipated, it becomes agood omen.Cephalomancy refers to divinatory procedures with t
