Capitolo 1CHAPTER 1UN PANORAMICO BALCONESULLA CITTÀA BALCONY OVERLOOKINGCOMO TOWNBrunateIl paese di Brunate si trova sul monte chesovrasta la città di Como. La panoramicalocalità è facilmente raggiungibile tramitela strada o, ancora più comodamente,con la funicolare, che dal 1894 collegala città alla sommità del monte. Propriocon la costruzione della funicolare, inizial’opera che porterà alla trasformazionedel piccolo insediamento di Brunate inun conosciutissimo centro di villeggiaturaper la classe medio-borghese di Milanoe dintorni. E’ attorno alla piazza d’arrivodella funicolare, che si insedieranno leprime attività imprenditoriali rivolte alturista: alberghi, chioschi per i souvenire ristoranti realizzati per l’accoglienza.Dalla fine dell’800, Brunate viene sceltacome località di villeggiatura, dove laclasse borghese benestante, costituitada industriali e commercianti, edifica lapropria villa: sono gli anni del benessereeconomico che si esprime a livelloarchitettonico con l’Eclettismo, cheincorpora diversi stili fra loro, fondendogusti liberty con gusti tipici delle epochepassate. Il percorso mira alla riscopertadi un elegante paese di villeggiatura,che ha vissuto tra l’800 e il ‘900 il suomassimo splendore e ancora oggi risentedell’atmosfera di ottimismo e di ambizioneche ha reso Brunate “un paese dellemeraviglie”.The town of Brunate is up on the mountthat overlooks the city of Como. Thepanoramic town is easy reachable throughthe road or, even more comfortable, bythe funicular which, from 1894, connectsthe city with the mount summit. It is withthe construction of the cable railway thatstarts the work that will bring the smalltown of Brunate to become well-knownholiday centre for Milan’s and nearbyareas bourgeoise and middle-class. It’saround the arrival square of the funicularthat the first tourist oriented businessactivities will settle down: hotels, souvenirkiosks and restaurants, all there towelcome the tourists. For about 30 years,starting from the first decade of the 20thcentury, Brunate becomes the holidaychosen site of the new rank class, madeof industrialists and merchants, who canafford a second house and build properindependent villas. PiazzaDELLA FUNICOLAREFUNICULAR SQUAREL’itinerario inizia da Piazzale Bonacossa,davanti alla stazione della funicolare.Chiediamo al turista uno sforzod’immaginazione: scendendo dallafunicolare, deve immedesimarsi in unvisitatore d’inizio Novecento, che durantele sue vacanze o nel fine settimana, scegliedi visitare Brunate, perché ne conosce lafama e la nomea degli ospiti villeggianti.Giunto nel paese, il viaggiatore sceglieràse pernottare in uno degli sfarzosi hotelche animano la località, oppure farsiospitare da un amico o un parente che quipossiede una casa di villeggiatura.The itinerary starts from “PiazzaleBonascossa” square, in front of thefunicolare station. We ask the touristan effort of imagination: getting off thefunicular, he/she should empathise with avisitor at the beginning of the 20th centurywho, at the week-end or during his/herholiday, decides to visit Brunate, becausehe knows the fame and the notoriety ofthe guest vacationers. Once arrived at thetown, the traveller will decide, if to sojournin one of the opulent hotels which liven upthe place or to be hosted by a friend ora relative who has a holiday house here.Proprio sulla piazza della funicolare, untempo si trovavano una serie di chioschiutilizzati come negozietti, per la vendita alturista di articoli di lusso, quali ad esempiole sete prodotte dalle industrie comasche,molto apprezzate dalle eleganti signore.Sulla destra della piazzetta sorgeva l’HotelMilano, di cui oggi vediamo le vestigiain stato di abbandono.
