Sexual Arousal

Pheromones Pheromones are biochemicals that aresecreted outside the body.– In research on animals, some pheromonesappear to be important in sexualcommunication and even have been called sexattractants.– Menstrual synchrony in humans is theconvergence over several months of the datesof onset of menstrual periods among womenwho are in close contact with each other.

Anaphrodisiacs Substances that decrease sexualdesire Examples:– Potassium nitrate (saltpeter)– Cyproterone acetate

Aphrodisiacs There is no known substance that workswell as an aphrodisiac. Myths: oysters, bananas, powderedrhinoceros horn, bull’s testicles, amylnitrite, butyl nitrite. So-called natural aphrodisiacs includeyohimbe, cayenne, argininer, aventa sativa, and damiana. Viagra and Cialis have been approved foruse in treating male sexual dysfunction.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Definitions Vasocongestion occurs when a great deal ofblood flows into the blood vessels in a region,in this case the genitals, as a result of thedilation of the blood vessels in the region. Myotonia occurs when the muscles contract, not only in the genitals but also throughout thebody.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Stages of Sexual Response Masters and Johnson described fourstages of sexual response:– Excitement– Plateau– Orgasm– Resolution

The Sexual Response Cycle:Excitement Phase The excitement phase is the beginningof erotic arousal.– Erection is the obvious arousal response inthe male.– Lubrication of the vagina is an importantresponse of females.– Both result from vascongestion.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Plateau Phase Vasocongestion reaches its peak during theplateau phase.– The penis is completely erect, the glans swells, and the testes are pulled higher and closer tothe body.– The orgasmic platform is a tightening of theouter third of the vagina and the elevation ofthe clitoris.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Orgasm In both males and females, there are sharpincreases in pulse rate, blood pressure, andbreathing rate during orgasm.– For males “ejaculatory inevitability” is asensation that ejaculation is just about tohappen and cannot be stopped.– For women the main feeling begins around theclitoris and then spreads outward through thewhole pelvis.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Resolution Phase Following orgasm is the resolution phase, during which the body returnsphysiologically to the unaroused state.– Men enter a refractory period duringwhich they are incapable of being arousedagain.– Women do not enter into a refractoryperiod, and some can have multipleorgasms.

Multiple Orgasms in Women If stimulated again, a female can immediately bearoused & move back into the excitement orplateau phase & have another orgasm. Multiple orgasm is more likely to results fromhand-genital or mouth-genital stimulation thanfrom intercourse. Masters & Johnson found that women inmasturbation might have 5 to 20 orgasms. When a vibrator is used, some women werecapable of having 50 consecutive orgasms.1-11Copyright 2008 The McGraw-Hill Companies,Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The Sexual Response Cycle:Vaginal and Clitoral Orgasms Masters and Johnson concluded that, physiologically, there is no differencebetween a vaginal orgasm and a clitoralorgasm.– This does not mean that psychologicallythere are not different kinds.

Changes During the SexualResponse Cycle in Males

Changes During the SexualResponse Cycle in Females

Criticisms ofMasters and Johnson’s Model Focused almost entirely on thephysiological aspects of the response, ignoring what the person is thinking andfeeling emotionally. Masters and Johnson’s researchexcluded anyone whose pattern of sexualresponse did not include orgasm, so themodel cannot be generalized to the entirepopulation.

Should Intercourseand Orgasm Be the Goal? Our culture has traditionally held thebelief that a sexual encounter shouldclimax with intercourse and orgasm. Another goal of sex has beensimultaneous orgasm. Orgasm is good, but a large part ofpleasure is the buildup to orgasm.

Cognitive-Physiological Models:Triphasic Model Helen Singer Kaplan’s triphasic model ofsexual response conceptualizes threerelatively independent phases:– sexual desire– vasocongestion of the genitals– reflex muscular contractions of the orgasmphase

Cognitive-Physiological Models:Walen & Roth Walen and Roth apply a cognitive approach tounderstanding the psychology of human sexuality.– Perception: The perception of a stimulus assexual.– Evaluation: If the stimulus is positive, it leads toarousal; if not, the arousal cycle stops.– Sexual behavior results from a positiveevaluation.

Walen and Roth Model

Nervous System Controlof Erection

Hormonal & Neural Bases of SexualBehavior: Erection & Ejaculation Erection and ejaculation are controlled byfairly simple spinal cord reflexes.– Men, who have had their spinal cordscompletely severed as a result ofaccidents, at a level above that of thereflex center, are still capable of erections& ejaculations produced by rubbing theirgenitals.

Hormonal and Neural Bases ofSexual Behavior: The Brain Sexual responses may be brought under voluntarycontrol and may be initiated by purelypsychological forces, such as fantasy. Environmental factors, such as having been taughtthat sex is dirty and sinful, may also affect one’ssexual response. Brain control of sexual response is complex andonly partly understood at the present time.

Hormonal & Neural Bases of SexualBehavior:The Limbic System The limbic system is a set of structures thatform a border between the central part of thebrain and the outer part (the cerebral cortex).– The brain scanning technique calledfunctional MRI confirmed that severalstructures in the limbic system wereactivated in healthy men by watching eroticfilms.

Limbic System of the Brain

Hormonal & Neural Bases ofSexual Behavior:Effects of Hormones Sex hormones interact with the nervoussystem to influence sexual response.– Hormones present during prenatal developmenthave important organizing effects and cause arelatively permanent change in the nervous orreproductive systems.– Activating effects either activate or deactivatecertain behaviors.

Hormonal and Neural Bases ofSexual Behavior: Testosterone Testosterone has well-documented effectson libido in humans.– Sexual desire is rapidly lost if a man is given anantiandrogen drug.– Androgens are used successfully in thetreatment of women who have low sexualdesire.

Erogenous Zones Parts of the body that are sexuallysensitive. Stroking them or otherwise stimulatingthem produces sexual arousal.

Erogenous Zones Examples:– Genitals– Breasts– Lips– Neck– Thighs– Back– Ears, stomach, and feet

One-Person Sex Autoeroticism - sexual self-stimulation– Masturbation - self-stimulation ofgenitals with the hand or some otherobject.– Some men and women masturbate asthey view erotic images in magazines,on video or DVD, or on the Internet.

Sexual Fantasy Sexual thoughts or images thatalter the person’s emotions orphysiological state.

Vibrators, Dildos, and Such Dildo - rubber or plastic cylinder, oftenshaped like a penis, that can be inserted intothe vagina or anus. Vibrators - some shaped like a penis andothers not, some are electric and somebattery-operated; used for masturbation. Body oils - popular for sexual use and havea sensuous quality that heightens eroticfeelings.

Mouth-Genital Stimulation Cunnilingus - mouth stimulation of the femalegenitals. Fellatio - mouth stimulation of the malegenitals. Sixty-Nining - simultaneous mouth-genitalstimulation; also called soixante-neuf. Anilingus - mouth stimulation of the partner’sanus.

Genital-Genital Stimulation:Positions of Intercourse Coitus (sexual intercourse) - the insertion of thepenis into the vagina.–––––Man on top - missionary positionWoman on topRear entrySide to sideOther variations Anal intercourse - insertion of the penis into thepartner’s rectum.

From Inexperience to Boredom:Boredom Possible consequence of long-term sexualrelationships.– communicate– sex manuals– rejuvenate other aspects of relationship– don’t expect too much from sex

From Inexperience to Boredom:Inexperience Not everyone is as experienced associety expects, which may causeperformance anxiety.– accept inexperience– “how-to” manuals– communicate

Retrograde Ejaculation

Hormonal and Neural Bases ofSexual Behavior: G-Spot The Grafenberg spot (G-spot, femaleprostate, or Skene’s glands) is located onthe top side of the vagina, about halfwaybetween the pubic bone and the cervix.– Stroking it produces sexual pleasure.
