1. Genesis1.1. Chapter 11(The Creation of the World)In the beginning, God created the heavensand the earth.2The earth was without form and void, anddarkness was over the face of the deep. Andthe Spirit of God was hovering over the faceof the waters.3And God said, "Let there be light," and therewas light.4And God saw that the light was good. AndGod separated the light from the darkness.5God called the light Day, and the darkness hecalled Night. And there was evening andthere was morning, the first day.

6And God said, "Let there be an expanse inthe midst of the waters, and let it separate thewaters from the waters."7And God made the expanse and separated thewaters that were under the expanse from thewaters that were above the expanse. And itwas so.8And God called the expanse Heaven. Andthere was evening and there was morning, thesecond day.9And God said, "Let the waters under theheavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.10God called the dry land Earth, and the watersthat were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11And God said, "Let the earth sproutvegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruittrees bearing fruit in which is their seed, eachaccording to its kind, on the earth." And itwas so.12The earth brought forth vegetation, plantsyielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw thatit was good.13And there was evening and there wasmorning, the third day.14And God said, "Let there be lights in theexpanse of the heavens to separate the dayfrom the night. And let them be for signs andfor seasons, and for days and years,15

and let them be lights in the expanse of theheavens to give light upon the earth." And itwas so.16And God made the two great lights--thegreater light to rule the day and the lesserlight to rule the night--and the stars.17And God set them in the expanse of theheavens to give light on the earth,18to rule over the day and over the night, and toseparate the light from the darkness. AndGod saw that it was good.19And there was evening and there wasmorning, the fourth day.20And God said, "Let the waters swarm withswarms of living creatures, and let birds flyabove the earth across the expanse of the

heavens."21So God created the great sea creatures andevery living creature that moves, with whichthe waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.22And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitfuland multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."23And there was evening and there wasmorning, the fifth day.24And God said, "Let the earth bring forthliving creatures according to their kinds-livestock and creeping things and beasts ofthe earth according to their kinds." And itwas so.25

And God made the beasts of the earthaccording to their kinds and the livestockaccording to their kinds, and everything thatcreeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.26Then God said, "Let us make man in ourimage, after our likeness. And let them havedominion over the fish of the sea and overthe birds of the heavens and over thelivestock and over all the earth and overevery creeping thing that creeps on theearth."27So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them.

28And God blessed them. And God said tothem, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill theearth and subdue it and have dominion overthe fish of the sea and over the birds of theheavens and over every living thing thatmoves on the earth."29And God said, "Behold, I have given youevery plant yielding seed that is on the faceof all the earth, and every tree with seed in itsfruit. You shall have them for food.30And to every beast of the earth and to everybird of the heavens and to everything thatcreeps on the earth, everything that has thebreath of life, I have given every green plantfor food." And it was so.31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was

evening and there was morning, the sixthday.1.2. Chapter 21(The Seventh Day, God Rests)Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.2And on the seventh day God finished hiswork that he had done, and he rested on theseventh day from all his work that he haddone.3So God blessed the seventh day and made itholy, because on it God rested from all hiswork that he had done in creation.4(The Creation of Man and Woman)

These are the generationsof the heavens and the earth when they werecreated,in the day that the Lord God made the earthand the heavens.5When no bush of the field was yet in thelandOr earth; also verse 6 and no small plantof the field had yet sprung up--for the LordGod had not caused it to rain on the land, andthere was no man to work the ground,6and a mist was going up from the land andwas watering the whole face of the ground-7then the Lord God formed the man of dustfrom the ground and breathed into his nostrilsthe breath of life, and the man became aliving creature.

8And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden,in the east, and there he put the man whomhe had formed.9And out of the ground the Lord God made tospring up every tree that is pleasant to thesight and good for food. The tree of life wasin the midst of the garden, and the tree of theknowledge of good and evil.10A river flowed out of Eden to water thegarden, and there it divided and became fourrivers.11The name of the first is the Pishon. It is theone that flowed around the whole land ofHavilah, where there is gold.12And the gold of that land is good; bdelliumand onyx stone are there.

13The name of the second river is the Gihon. Itis the one that flowed around the whole landof Cush.14And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourthriver is the Euphrates.15The Lord God took the man and put him inthe garden of Eden to work it and keep it.16And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree ofthe garden,17but of the tree of the knowledge of good andevil you shall not eat, for in the day that youeat of it you shall surely die."18Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that

the man should be alone; I will make him ahelper fit for him."19Now out of the ground the Lord God hadformed every beast of the field and every birdof the heavens and brought them to the manto see what he would call them. Andwhatever the man called every livingcreature, that was its name.20The man gave names to all livestock and tothe birds of the heavens and to every beast ofthe field. But for Adam there was not found ahelper fit for him.21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fallupon the man, and while he slept took one ofhis ribs and closed up its place with flesh.22And the rib that the Lord God had taken fromthe man he made into a woman and brought

her to the man.23Then the man said,"This at last is bone of my bonesand flesh of my flesh;she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."24Therefore a man shall leave his father and hismother and hold fast to his wife, and theyshall become one flesh.25And the man and his wife were both nakedand were not ashamed.

1.3. Chapter 31(The Fall)Now the serpent was more crafty than anyother beast of the field that the Lord God hadmade. He said to the woman, "Did God actuallysay, 'You shall not eat of any tree in thegarden'?"2And the woman said to the serpent, "We mayeat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,3but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit ofthe tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"4But the serpent said to the woman, "You willnot surely die.5For God knows that when you eat of it your

eyes will be opened, and you will be likeGod, knowing good and evil."6So when the woman saw that the tree wasgood for food, and that it was a delight to theeyes, and that the tree was to be desired tomake one wise, she took of its fruit and ate,and she also gave some to her husband whowas with her, and he ate.7Then the eyes of both were opened, and theyknew that they were naked. And they sewedfig leaves together and made themselvesloincloths.8And they heard the sound of the Lord Godwalking in the garden in the cool of the day,and the man and his wife hid themselvesfrom the presence of the Lord God among thetrees of the garden.9

But the Lord God called to the man and saidto him, "Where are you?"10And he said, "I heard the sound of you in thegarden, and I was afraid, because I wasnaked, and I hid myself."11He said, "Who told you that you were naked?Have you eaten of the tree of which Icommanded you not to eat?"12The man said, "The woman whom you gaveto be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate."13Then the Lord God said to the woman, "Whatis this that you have done?" The woman said,"The serpent deceived me, and I ate."14The Lord God said to the serpent,

"Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestockand above all beasts of the field;on your belly you shall go,and dust you shall eatall the days of your life.15I will put enmity between you and thewoman, and between your offspring and heroffspring;he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."16

To the woman he said,"I will surely multiply your pain inchildbearing;in pain you shall bring forth children.Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."17And to Adam he said,"Because you have listened to the voice ofyour wifeand have eaten of the treeof which I commanded you,'You shall not eat of it,'cursed is the ground because of you;in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your

life;18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;and you shall eat the plants of the field.19By the sweat of your faceyou shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken;for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

20The man called his wife's name Eve, becauseshe was the mother of all living.21And the Lord God made for Adam and forhis wife garments of skins and clothed them.22Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the manhas become like one of us in knowing goodand evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand andtake also of the tree of life and eat, and liveforever--"23therefore the Lord God sent him out from thegarden of Eden to work the ground fromwhich he was taken.24He drove out the man, and at the east of thegarden of Eden he placed the cherubim and aflaming sword that turned every way to guardthe way to the tree of life.

1.4. Chapter 41(Cain and Abel)Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and sheconceived and bore Cain, saying, "I havegotten a man with the help of the Lord."2And again, she bore his brother Abel. NowAbel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain aworker of the ground.3In the course of time Cain brought to theLord an offering of the fruit of the ground,4and Abel also brought of the firstborn of hisflock and of their fat portions. And the Lordhad regard for Abel and his offering,5but for Cain and his offering he had no

regard. So Cain was very angry, and his facefell.6The Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?7If you do well, will you not be accepted? Andif you do not do well, sin is crouching at thedoor. Its desire is forOr against you, but youmust rule over it."8Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And whenthey were in the field, Cain rose up againsthis brother Abel and killed him.9Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abelyour brother?" He said, "I do not know; am Imy brother's keeper?"10And the Lord said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to

me from the ground.11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive yourbrother's blood from your hand.12When you work the ground, it shall no longeryield to you its strength. You shall be afugitive and a wanderer on the earth."13Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment isgreater than I can bear.14Behold, you have driven me today away fromthe ground, and from your face I shall behidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wandereron the earth, and whoever finds me will killme."15Then the Lord said to him, "Not so! Ifanyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken

on him sevenfold." And the Lord put a markon Cain, lest any who found him shouldattack him.16Then Cain went away from the presence ofthe Lord and settled in the land of Nod, eastof Eden.17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived andbore Enoch. When he built a city, he calledthe name of the city after the name of his son,Enoch.18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fatheredMehujael, and Mehujael fatheredMethushael, and Methushael fatheredLamech.19And Lamech took two wives. The name ofthe one was Adah, and the name of the otherZillah.

20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of thosewho dwell in tents and have livestock.21His brother's name was Jubal; he was thefather of all those who play the lyre and pipe.22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forgerof all instruments of bronze and iron. Thesister of Tubal-cain was Na
